Running Linux on a Chromebook

I have been trying to run FlDigi in Linux,? no luck at all.??
Stats:? ?Chromebook,? Linux penguin,? (setup by? a friend for his BBS) Anyone 5888uv,? with a Digi rig.?
FlDigi is downloaded and unzipped then nothing.? My friend says I have all the proper cables and hardware.
?
?
Is a a hardware issue or a total lack of Linux knowledge?
?
Thanks for you advice?

Does your Linux username belong to the dialout group?

I must be dense,? I don't understand the question.

you must be in the dialout group for fldigi to function properly.

however i dont think that would cause?it not to run at all.

Open a terminal,?

then type fldigi. Does it open? if not what is the terminal telling you, look for errors.

Thanks Dan KC2STA

Due to my own personal experience I would never recommend a chromebook for Linux install beyond experimentation.? I have had several chromebooks and none of them ran efficiently or effectively any Linux software I wanted it to run.? Due to the lack of driver support, nuetured hardware, and other things I have abandoned chromebooks altogether in favor of used laptops or Windows PCs, and then installing a fullfledged Linux OS.? My flavor is Ubuntu.?
?
Based on your description you stated you unzipped and nothing...??
?
I have a couple of questions.? FLdigi in Linux is distributed as a build from source app.? Meaning you have to compile it before you can run it.??
?
What flavor of Linux is on your Chromebook? (Debian, Ubuntu, Arch, etc)?
?
Did you follow the Sourceforge Wiki HOWTO instructions to compile and install FLDigi??
?
If you didn't compile it, it won't run.??
?

Thank you for the links provided in your reply,? ?I will need to check them.
FYI this is as far as I have progressed.
?
My terminal is open it shows:
?
fkatalenas@penquin:~/fldigi-4.2.04/fldigi-4.204$
?
I guess I'm not too far along in the process?
I do have a windows machine on order for my shack, but I will have some time to play and learn Linux.
My goal is to work digital modes.
?
Thanks again for your advice
??

Hi,
I have heard of Sourceforge, but never checked it.? I was told that learning from? the command line was best in the long run.
?
For myself? I think the learning curve is too much.?
Thanks for your input.
Please see my other reply's in this thread.??

I am attempting to add a screenshot.??
Also I am guessing am in some trouble as the Chromebook shows me critically low on Linux space.

Thanks again

Frank?
First you need to get the proper file. the zip file is for windows.

from Linux open a browser search fldigi download.?

Select?source forge, download files -

it should be fldigi-4.2.06.tar.gz

then go to :
?

for install?instructions.

Are you running?Pengwin?linux?

This is a linux version optimized?for Windows subsystems for Linux. Maybe not the best choice for a chromebook.

search for "best linux for a chromebook", some good choices.?

Also , yes, linux has a learning curve, it will take time and effort to learn. It is a journey. I've been using linux for 20 years and still learning. Lots of help out there.

Let us know how it goes

Thanks Dan KC2STA

If you're having trouble finding directories in a terminal window, I would recommend installing Midnight Commander.? It's a clone of the old Norton Commander from back in the DOS days.??? You can use synaptic or whatever package manager you have on your version of Linux to search for and install it.? Once installed you can just type mc to run it.?? It will have a dual window that makes it easier to copy and is mouse enabled.
?

Darrin,

Thank you for mentioning Midnight Commander.? It may help me here.? I recall the Norton Commander and there was a time when I used it in my DOS days.

Chromebooks are strange things, even when running their original OS!

A local school went that route a few years ago to save costs.? It bit them, as it was found few machines could access the network printers!?? The company that supplied them could not fix the issue.? AFAIK they bit the bullet and went back to the dark (Micro$oft) side at great expense..

The above came from a friend who used to work at that school at that time.? From what she said, I doubt I could have fixed the issue even if I knew my way around the cut down Linux OS that was installed on them.

Anyway...

There is also? YTree available.?? Very similar to the old DOS XTree.

The above as implemented in LMDE 6 (Linux Mint, without the Ubuntu parts.)

It it works OK, bit does have it's quirks.

Frankly, with most modern Linux distro's, the default gui based file explorer is more than good enough.? The only problem is that they all behave slightly different on each Linux distribution.

The default file manager/explorer "nemo" on LMDE.

The big advantage is that it recognises and honours all the rights and permissions on the system.

Each to their own, and everyone's "tastes" are different.? Use what works for you, but learn it inside-out, top to bottom etc, so you become fully conversant with it.? Especially any quirky bits!

Happy Days eh.

My son and I linuxized a retired Toshiba “Swanky” chromebook.? Right now it’s running NixOS with the xfce desktop, which handles the odd hardware (sound card, etc.) quite well.

?

We did this in order to run FLDigi and JS8Call for digital modes, and that works well so long as the Chromebook can access an NTP server (it’s onboard clock is atrocious).

?

We had to break the write protect on the onboard storage and add an expansion SD card to gain enough space for the OS.? Probably not for the faint of heart, but it was a fun hacking job!

Hello,
?
recently I purchased and reflashed Lenovo N23, 4GB RAM, 16 GB flash. Running JS8Call to my complete satisfaction, using QDX and/or QMX transceiver (both have built-in USB CDC's for serial and sound interface). The chromebook runs from full charge at least 9 hours, maybe more. With QMX, QDX except battery there are no extra boxes or parts to take in my backpack, such as digirig etc.
?
I tried to install VARA (because it's a standard in one of emcomm groups I participate in) but no success, the reason being that VARA is available as Win32 app only and the necessary libraries don't fit into the 16 GB disk. Were it 32 GB or were VARA also a x64 app everything would be fine.
?
I am expecting Dell Chromebook 11 3180 with 32 GB flash, I will let you know how I succeeded with that one.
?
Just my two cents. IMHO for field operations like SOTA, WWFF, ARES chromebook fits nicely - light, resilient, long battery life, inexpensive to buy. No bells and whistles, of course, just the software you need in the field.

I have a Chromebook Lenovo CT X636F.? Tried to use Crostini (crouton): can install FLDIGI and run it but, as stated by some online help, Linux software running in Crostini can only see "supported peripheral". FLDIGI can't see my Xiaegu and, in general, Crostini can't see any simple USB drive too! Anyone has better results?

Hi, Roberto,
software packages from repositories are usually quite out of date. If you need to support CAT of newer or less popular model of trx, often it helps to build the software from source.

Hi Jindra
?
sorry, you are far from the point:? Crostini does not see ANY USB device, also a memory stick is not loaded.?

the application cannot see any peripheral, so the radio model is only the next problem, I hope :-)

Roberto,

I don't know what is Crostini, but I think I had a similar problem with that Dell 3180. When I unlocked developer mode I was unable to complete the procedure described at site mrchromebox.tech. Basically any second network request ended with DNS error. Also, as in your case, USB ports were locked. Probably there was some kind of additional security policy somehow activated in the system.
What I did:?
1. I moved all scripts needed to complete the reflashing task on a PC in my LAN. On that PC I started a simple web server. In my case it was nginx (the easiest to install and set up) but I think you could use anything, even "Simple HTTP server" plugin in VS Code IDE.
2. Then I carefully analyzed the scripts and replaced any HTTP download (curl ... ) by a local URL, i.e. URL based on the address of my PC running? HTTP server.
3. During the analysis I found reference to one or two other files that the script would further download from the internet (one of them was the new ROM content) and also fixed all URLs to match their new location in LAN.

Then, on the chromebook, I used the instruction from mrchromebox.tech except that I downloaded the initial script from the HTTP server in LAN. Then everything worked as it should - obviously download from local network was not blocked, luckily.

In other words, I wiped out ChromeOS from the chromebook completely and installed a new BIOS and Linux (only). I hope I understand your probem correctly. In general I saw some instruction videos how to install Linux on Chromebooks that coexists with th installed ChromeOS but I think such scenario on a computer with so limited resources is a dead end.

Jindra,
?
thanks a lot.? Your detailed approach is a try I will apply to, as soon as I can plan (I think a full day of work :-)).?? Crostini is the "internal" linux embedded in ChromeOS, installing it is just a couple of click and does not impact on the standard OS.?? Unfortunately it is not a full linux machine and cannot be used with HAM software...
?
The idea to have a full linux, keyboarded, tablet is great, will take the risk of bricking the unit.?? Also if Lenovo duet is a cheap unit, probably a light linux install will give it a second life
