Fldigi Lockup
I am running Linux Mint 22 Cinnamon and Fldigi version 4.2.06.09 and I'm running into a problem.
After a bit of operation Fldigi will lock up. When I check top it tells me Fldigi is using more than 100% CPU utilization. I have to kill and restart Fldigi. This happened with the stable version 4.2.06 and on another Linux Mint computer. I have no problems on the Windows 11 computer. Does anyone else have this issue and is there a way I can trouble shoot this. I have 7.7 gig of memory and 1 Terra Byte of storage. 73, Ron NY3J |
Dave and other Linux users,
I am still having issues with my Linux Fldigi setup. I figured I would take another crack at trying to resolve this. I am running Linux Mint 22 Cinnamon and Fldigi version 4.2.06.15 and I'm running into a problem. After a bit of operation Fldigi will lock up. When I check top it tells me Fldigi is using more than 100% CPU utilization. I have to kill and restart Fldigi. I have 7.7 gig of memory and 1 Terra Byte of storage. I do use the WIKI how to section on building. It looks like it builds okay but I do see some messages about Pipewire. I guess the newer Linux loads use Pipewire now instead of Pulseaudio. I can't be sure but my problems may have started since I updated Linux Mint to 22 using Pipewire. Do you think I'm having issues building the program myself. I don't see a distribution I can use that's already built 73, Ron NY3J |
Hi Ron,
?
What are you using for PTT/CAT control?
?
I have also been having problems recently running Flrig + Fldigi (and also JS8Call) on Linux Mint 22. Sorry I don't have any answers for you, just wanted to add a "me too".
?
- Linux Mint 22 (kernel 6.8.0-50-generic)
- Flrig 2.0.05.85 and Fldigi 4.2.04.16 compiled per the sourceforge wiki linked from w1hkj.com
- JS8Call v2.2.1-devel installed via apt from the Linux Mint repository
- FTDI USB-to-serial interface, Sabrent USB-audio interface
?
I haven't quite figured out the pattern yet, but it seems that after about 30 to 60 minutes of not transmitting that Flrig will not respond then next time I try to transmit. This has happened when using Fldigi and JS8Call. I don't remember Fldigi locking up, I will have to do some more observing to see.
?
I wonder if anyone can point us in the direction of a logfile or something to look at when this happens?
?
Cheers,

开云体育Hi Steve,For HF, using my IC-7300, I use Rigcat. For FM, using my Kenwood TM-V71a, I'm using a Digi Rig with hardware PTT. For a while I was thinking something with rig control or USB Audio Codec sound interface but the other day I was using a Web SDR and using Pulse Audio monitor to route the audio to Fldigi and Fldigi froze on me. It is frustrating because there is no pattern so I don't know where to start troubleshooting it. 73, Ron NY3J On 12/13/2024 12:29 PM, Steve K4RVA via

开云体育Hi Steve A way out possibility.. At 30-60 minutes it may be another process (like from cron) doing "something" that affects. Might be worth a look at syslog or journal display when it next freezes. Also cat your $HOME/.xsession-errors or just run flrig in a console window. I had some strange flrig problems when the WiFi/cell modem kept
resetting, I am assuming from the "interface up/down" scripts.
That could have been proven by turning off the external network
connection for a while. Cheers Bob VK2YQA On 14/12/24 04:29, Steve K4RVA via

Thanks Bob, that gives me a few things to look at. I also started flrig from a shell prompt, as you suggested. Now I'll just have to wait. :D ?
There's nothing in cron.d or cron.daily that looks potentially harmful, but I'll have to investigate them a bit more to be sure.
You know, that reminds me of something in the past about ModemManager mucking with the serial ports. A couple of years ago, while hunting down a different problem on a different system, I did turn it off at one point but I don't remember if it helped or not. I'll have to look into that some more. ?
Thanks!

开云体育Thanks Richard,During a net I usually open Fldigi then I open Flmsg to create traffic for the net. I don't use the list feature and don't have transfer direct checked. I usually leave the Flmsg's that I receive open so I can read them during the net. I also have Flamp open. I forget exactly which version the lockups started to happen. The two Pennsylvania nets on Sunday gets pretty busy. Also, the FM net on the local repeater gets busy so Fldigi gets quite a workout. When I run the top program after the lockup it shows Fldigi running at more than 100% and stays that way until I reboot. 73, Ron NY3J On 12/13/2024 6:28 PM, Richard Jackson,

Here's a follow up to the Fldigi lockup problem. So I'm now using Ubuntu 24.04. Tonight on a local FM repeater NBEMS net I was so happy because everything was working great. There was a lot of traffic. Different speeds were used including 8psk1000f. I received 4 Flamp's, 4 Flmsg's and an image without a problem. I sent an Flamp and an image. Then, during the checkouts, I looked and Fldigi was frozen. I checked top and Fldigi was at 206.5 percent CPU. Here's a copy and paste of the top readings:

Hi Linux Users,
?
Just wanted to update this topic to keep it alive. I'm still fighting the Fldigi lockup. Here's a screen shot of HTOP when I get the Fldigi freeze:
?
?
I'm wondering why there are so many instances of Fldigi and how does the CPU percentage go above 100%.
When I switch back to Windows 11 I don't have any problems. I really want to use the Linux version.

htop is showing every running thread separately.? fldigi at times can be executing on over 20 threads,? This looks suspiciously like a problem with the audio stream.? Are you using portaudio, pulse audio, or pipewire??? David On Thu, Mar 27, 2025 at 5:58?AM Ron NY3J via <rwenig=[email protected]> wrote:

开云体育Thanks David, that does make sense on the various threads of Fldigi that runs. I can imagine all of the processes that it uses.So I have tried various audio settings, portaudio, pulse audio and pipewire and I've had the lock ups with all three. I can't remember ever having issues before when the various Linux systems didn't use pipewire and I'm suspicious of it. When I follow the WIKI for the Linux Mint build that says to install pavucontrol I get a message that says there's a conflict with pipewire. I select yes to accept and everything seems to be okay. 73, Ron NY3J On 3/27/25 08:20, Dave, W1HKJ via

Perhaps you would benefit from upgrading to Mint 22.1 (if you are not already there), and build/install Fldigi 4.2.06.26.

开云体育Hi Joe,I am running Mint 22.1 and Fldigi version 4.2.06.09 and I use Rigcat for rig control. Usually Fldigi does run 20% or less CPU. It's usually during a net when there's lots of things happening that, without warning, I look at Fldigi and it stopped. Very embarrassing when NCS just called on me to send my traffic :-) So the autosuspend was 2 and I used the instructions in the Linuxmint forum to set it to -1. Thanks for the information. It's interesting that it didn't effect my wireless USB keyboard and mouse. 73, Ron NY3J On 3/27/25 14:23, Joseph Counsil, K?OG

开云体育So I just finished a net with the local ARES group on their FM repeater. There was a lot of traffic that I received and I passed traffic and no lockup. So hopefully disabling USB sleep fixed it.When I built Fldigi I didn't install pavucontrol because like I said there was a message that popped up saying there was a conflict with pipewire and pulseaudio. The one thing I noticed is I can click the speaker icon in the task bar, select the USB Audio Device and adjust the audio levels which is easier than using pavucontrol and the sound levels both speaker and mic seem to be okay. I have PortAudio selected with pipewire. Thanks again and 73, Ron NY3J On 3/27/25 14:58, Ron NY3J via

It has to be just my setup because I don't hear anyone else with this problem. I'll keep plugging away. Ron NY3J On 3/27/25 22:14, Ron Wenig wrote:
