Linux Terminal Software for HAL DXP38 Modem
Is anyone aware of a native Linux equivalent of terminal software for interfacing to the old HAL DXP38 modem? To my knowledge HAL only provided x86 DOS and Windows versions of their terminal software. I realize DOSbox and VirtualBox could provide the runtime environments needed, but a native Linux solution would be very nice to have. Amazingly, I still have 3.5 in. diskettes of the DOS and Win versions of this application.
I really liked using a hardware-based FSK HF modem (as powerful and feature-rich fldigi and other SW solutions are). But after migrating the shack computer to Linux, the DXP38 is sort of left stranded on the shelf. Comments from the group welcomed. Wayne, W0ZW |
Wayne, I'm not sure what the DXP38 does, but assume you need a program to interface with the RS232 port on the rear panel. If this is correct, you could use a number of linux programs.? I use GTKTerm to run a MFJ-1278B, but there are other programs too. These include Minicom, and Cutecom.? I imagine there are others too.? But the three I have mentioned have been used on my linux systems over the years to run the 1278B.? Of course, you will have to get it to connect by the proper port, and all of that, getting all the settings correct to link up to the modem. Hope this helps some. 73, Andy, ka2uqw

I don't think a terminal program, even one with a split screen is going to do what you need it to on that modem. There are a lot of special key functions and a special display it looks like.
But I did see that folks are running the Windows application under WINE in Linux. That would be your best bet I think. Rick Kunath, K9AO |
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHello Wayne, I've never heard of the HAL DXP38 modem so I thought I'd research it a bit.? Per , it looks like an interesting multi-modem HF TNC that offers FSK RTTY, FSK AMTOR, FSK P-Mode (evidently this is slang for Pactor-1), and audio based CLOVER / CLOVER-2 but no FSK/AFSK packet modes unlike say KAM, PK232, and other more common "amateur radio" grade HF TNCs.? Later in this manual URL, it shows various screen shots of the Windows program which seems like a highly customized serial terminal program with lots of modem-specific macros, features, etc.? The most comprehensive list of Linux Amateur programs (thought rather old) is: ?? Doing a text search on that archived page for "DXP38" brings up nothing. I did find a some recent posts around: ?? - TRLog supporting at least some RTTY elements of the DXP38: ? ? ? ?? - JNOS support for PACTOR and CLOVER: ???? Page 101 - Beyond that, I somewhat doubtful a Linux program exists since it's a very proprietary setup but maybe someone else might chime in here with other news. Btw.. I did find mention of DXP38 firmware still posted here: ?? /g/CloverMode/topic/updating_firmware/72714608 ?? -- ? ? ? ?? -- --David KI6ZHD ?? On 07/21/2024 09:46 AM, Wayne, W0ZW

Thanks for all the kind comments. Yes, the DXP38 is a circa. 2000 multi-mode HF modem. The HAL terminal programs (for both DOS and Windows) feature a User Interface specific to the DXP38. This includes menu settings and short cuts for enabling/disabling various features and modes plus having a tuning indicator and split RX/TX text windows. I can initialize and talk to the modem over a generic ASCII terminal, but the convenient DXP38-specific buttons and pre-programmed Function keys are lacking.
I actually have the HAL serial interface specification, which includes a description of the serial protocol and the extensive command set (supports the HAL DSP4100 in addition to the DXP38) . It would be a nice project for someone to create a new terminal program for this box. But before suggesting that I thought I'd see if one already existed (which is doubtful). As an aside, the logging software N1MM+ can talk to the DXP38. I have used it in this manner quite successfully for a number of years. But again, that is a Windows solution. Further comments welcomed! Wayne, W0ZW |
Wayne, After reading the comments, DOSBOX might be worth a try, at least you can get the dos screen up and load your original software and see how it runs. 73, Andy, ka2uqw

You could also look at CuteCom, a native 'nix application.
The later (current) version, has configurable "buttons" for common tasks, ideal for modems and other things. The programs author is also reachable if you have detailed questions about it's operation. No affiliation, or its author, just a happy user. Dave B. -- Created on and sent from a Unix like PC running and using free and open source software: |
I am happy to report that the old HAL DXP38 DOS executable seems to run fine in DOSbox (v0.74-3) on top of Mint 21.3. It helps that I have the original Operating Manual to refresh my memory on short cuts, Function key definitions, etc., although the help menus are still there.
The only problem now is there are no RTTY signals on the air to receive! Will attempt to copy the W1AW digital bulletin tonight. That will be a good RX test. 73, Wayne, W0ZW |
