z, kt, it-100tuners use with any radio

Good day,
?
z, kt, it-100tuners use with any radio
?
Has anyone use these tuners with an older radio with no tuner interface?
?
Talked with LDG they said, "we have not tested these with it's unintended radio".? I'm sure that comment is to avoid litigation, which is ok with me.
?
Is it more than a DC connection? Or will they work with just the tune auto button?
?
Thanks,
James?

No one tried this?

Yes. With a Z-817 and Z-11. No interface cable needed.

What exactly has no one tried to do,I¡¯m curious ,Dave

Hi Jim,

I don't have an IT-100 tuner, but I do have a KT-100 here. I don't think that one will operate with anything other than Kenwood radios. The KT-100 uses the Kenwood AT-300 tuner connection on the back of the radio. The cable has a six pin JST connector -?ELP-06V -?for the AT-300 rear panel connection, and a seven pin mini din on the other end. There is no separate external power connection like most other LDG tuners have.

Back in the day LDG sold an external box that went between Kenwood radios, and normal LDG tuners. So, I'm guessing there are control signals provided by the AT-300 connection that the KT-100 is looking for - no control signals may mean the tuner will not function.

Hi,
The manufacturer specific signals are really there to enable the Radio's tune button, and get the good/bad status back.
All the protocols are different (different voltages, and different signalling/information).
Some of the manufacturer's ATUs use these signals for band/frequency information, but the LDG/MFJ ones are pretty generic.
If you give them power, then they will work fine with just about any radio, as long as you use the tune button when needed.
(I've used a K-100 with a 12V power cable soldered to the main board, on Icom/Yaesu radios with no problems).

nice, thanks Roger,

I am borrowing an AT-11mp, it doesn't like 160, 80 and won't tune, however, if I manually tune it I can get low SWR. better than 1.5:1, then if i change freq a little it will tune............. if I change alot it won't be able to tune it again, why is it having problems auto tuning???
?
Any thoughts?

FWIW, I own four standalone auto-tuners, including two from LDG and I've never felt the need to directly interface them to a rig. Just a half second of low level carrier is enough to get them to immediately jump to the appropriate memory and if there is no memory affiliated with my intended frequency, sending that same carrier will initiate a quick tuning cycle. With my Yaesu rigs, I have the initiate tune pin on the amplifier control port wired to a small momentary push-button which instructs the rig to send ten watts of carrier (power is set by a menu setting) which is useful for all sorts of things, including both auto/manual tuners and tuning up amplifiers.
