tweeking 380 jib size
Anyone out there with experience on increasing the standard 380 jib size using the existing fairleads??
We are looking to get a new jib to handle offshore cruising in the islands and hopefully to the med. Also interested in thoughts on sail material.? we would like something that will perform for 5-10 years if it is not cost prohibitive. thanks tim and tracey ramsey sv folie a deux lagoon 3803 hull 47 St Augustine, FL USA |
If you have the same genoa I do, I am not sure you can increase its size very much. When sheeted in tight it is almost to the front fairlead. If it were longer and you moved the car back, you might have to have the sail cut differently as to the height of the clew. Either way, I don't believe you will be able to change the total sail area by very much %.
?Also, a larger sail will be heavier, so it might negate some advantages if you want it for lighter winds. Why do you want a larger sail. If you are sailing in the Islands, BVI? usually there is quite a bit of wind, so a larger sail isn't really needed, but I don't know your exact requirements. I think the 380 is one of the best 'sailing' lagoons due to its SA/D. Moves well in light winds, though if you are sailing off the wind lots in up to 15kts you might want to consider a gennaker or code 0. My gennaker came with the boat, I wish it had UV coating so I could leave it up all the time.? Just my 2c, YMMV. |
I don't have a L380 but I imagine adding a bowsprit and a screecher would do a lot more for it then a bigger Genoa. I added that setup to our Lagoon L37 TPI and actually shrunk the 120 Genoa down to an 85% jib. Makes it better for slotting it with the Screecher and it is storm sail size reefed. For slotting the bowsprit will need to be a minimum of 60". Mack Sails can set you up with what you would need as they have done a bunch of these setups.? I'm biased! But I don't think I agree that the L380 is one of the best sailing Lagoon cruising cats. The SA/D of the L380 I believe it is around 18.8 which, while not bad, is about the same as the L450. Our older Lagoon L37 TPI (the predecessor to the L380) has a SA/D of 25.86. :) Top speed on our run down the Jersey coast 2 days ago was 14.6kts with 2 reefs in main and jib reefed to storm size. We were on a beam reach less than a mile from shore..? granted the gust that caused it prompted us to stop into Atlantic City for lunch and to let it calm down a bit!?
