Re: Yanmar Pre fuel filters vs. Racor's

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Peter,

I agree with Jim on the Racors and I used 10 micron also.? Only difference is that I left the Yanmar filters on the engine (also 10 Micron).? In 10 years and almost 4000 hours never had a problem.? I change Racors very frequently.? The engine mounted filters annually.

Congrats Peter.

Racor 500 series, one only, each engine. 10 Microns. Keep four spare cartridge elements on board for racor, two spares for engine mounted filter.

Remove all other inline filters(volvo, yanmar, other racor style, etc). Don't waste time doing any other research, don't complicate with multiple inline filters or stupid cross connect valves. All junk.?

And don't waste money on marine version(white one), stupid extra bowl useless. Get standard beige color 500, you'll never look back.

P.S. I use Soltron additive. Last boat I polished the 20 year old tanks by hand, there was three pounds of bio-sludge crap at bottom. Started using Soltron, 11 years later, less than one complete fuel cycle per year, opened inspection plates and no crude. The stuff, or equivalent, really works.

Re: L400 - Access to speedometer from inside?

Tim,

Thanks for the tip on silicone..? though a bit late on that one, as I just too replaced yesterday a pump in bathroom and used a bit of Vaseline to keep rubber O ring in place so as to screw pump into place.? Guess i wait and see if this causes me a problem. ??

Thank you
Marcus

Re: L400 - Access to speedometer from inside?

Thanks for such a quick response.? Found it right away.? Started to open, but more water than I wanted came in.? Just tighten it back down for now.? Guessing it is the wheel, but not really in good place to just open it at least without having a new one to replace, so just will see if I can order one from West Marine for my next stop over.? Until then I use rpm and sog to determine my speed.?

Thanks again both of you as you both were very helpful and i greatly appreciate it.
Marcus

Re: L400 - Access to speedometer from inside?

Vaseline (and other petroleum based lubricants) can degrade rubber seals and cause them to swell. On the speedometer, this will effectively increase the diameter of the o-ring, make it difficult to reinsert into the housing sleeve (especially past the flap), and will eventually cause it to leak. Don't ask how I know...

Use a silicone based lubricant on all your rubber o-rings, especially those in your macerator pumps.

Everything else Roger says is correct.

Cheers,
Tim

Re: Yanmar Pre fuel filters vs. Racor's

I have 2017 42 hull 142 and my 57 hp yanmars has racor prefilters.
Very happy with engines performance.

Yanmar Pre fuel filters vs. Racor's

I am a new Lagoon 42 owner. First diesel motors I have owned. Before purchasing my boat, most cruising blogs and journal's have had the owners switch to Racor filters with clear bowls to see if water is in the fuel. I have also read the Yanmar is one of the biggest names in diesel motors and very reliable. So the question is... Do I upgrade to Racor fuel filters??

Re: L380 S2 Canchor chain

I am afraid you will get here only advice but not a definitive answer.
You may try your old chain on the windlass and find out if it works properly or not.
If it does - just use the link size to check the new chain.
If old chain does not work well - it is a hint that the other 10mm link should work. However, to be sure, you may check the printed manual, ask the manufacturer, take the gypsy to the store or ask the seller to visit the boat.
Other consideration, after ascertaining proper link size, will be the tensile strength of the chain (higher the better of course), and highly related to the strength - weld quality.

Re: L380 S2 Canchor chain

The three types of 10mm chain refer to the different dimensions of each link. See this page for the differences (basically, the long length of the internal hole, 30mm vs 28mm):

If you can't tell what model your gypsy is or what size it requires, you can relatively easily remove the gypsy and take it into the store to test fit it with the chain in the store.

In my experience, the design of the gypsy makes it relatively forgiving as to the chain size, as old and new chain both work after significant wear/rust/etc. But that assumes it was the right size to start with...

Re: L380 S2 Canchor chain

The what chain fits is completely dependant on what chain wheel was ordered with your windlass. I'd personally always get the HT(high strength) version of what fits in galvanized. There should be a code on the chain wheel that tells you which one it is and you should be able to contact the windlass manufacturer to find out the dimensions of the chain that fits it.?

Hi
I am not sure if the chain on board is the correct one, hence to question.

Re: L380 S2 Canchor chain

I have the same windlass.? Either 10mm or 3/8" will fit depending on what country you buy in.? Also, you need pitch 28 which is length of link (depends on each gypsy).? ISO, DIN766 & BBB are all different quality of chain.? I purchased DIN766 G30 for cost savings.? Good luck.

Re: L380 S2 Canchor chain

Word of caution: the designation is 10mm. However there is more than one type of 10mm chain link size. Same wire, different link shape!
Measure your old link sizes - length and width of inner opening and check against the new one that you consider.
If sizes do not match you will have a jumping/slipping chain even though it matches the 10mm wire thickness.

Big is best. Your anchor and chain is your life line. Go the biggest and best anchor and the heaviest chain, even if you have to change the sprocket on the windlass. Heavy chain assists your anchor.
Happy sailing

Re: L380 S2 Canchor chain

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

It¡¯s the gypsy that determines the chain size. Yours says 10 mm.?

3/8¡± is 9.525mm, so just a bit smaller than you need.?
