Hi Joel,? Thank you for the feedback. Sorry for the appropriate language usage. English is my second language.? Could you please advise which word is suitable to replace "character"? Thanks! Sincerely Helena On Fri, 11 Apr 2025 at 10:41, Joel Garcia <joelragegarcia@...> wrote:

开云体育Just say ARTISTS or use the phrase “artists of traditional arts such as…”, or traditional crafts persons, etc. ?Or if you’re engaging with that community on a regular basis just ask them how they prefer to be referred to.?If English is not your first language use a proofreader/editor who is proficient in English. Especially if sending out a call, press release, job listings, emails, etc. Those are public documents subject to scrutiny. I use to do that for a former boss of mine who was of Lebanese heritage at CalTech. It can be a mine field in the US. Best to proceed with an abundance of caution.? Everything that rises must converge? ? ? ~?Pierre Teilhard de Chardin? On Apr 11, 2025, at 1:44?PM, Helena Wu via groups.io <wuyingnaafrica@...> wrote:

It is more appropriate to refer to people being filmed in a Documentary as "subjects" but even this is problematic for communities who were historically marginalized. Better to use the term "participants" or "interviewees". Also need some clarification: Are you looking for specifically California Native Tribal members, or members of other Tribal Nations who are currently living/based in LA County? If you are looking specifically for California Native Tribal Members, it is probably better to contact the tribes directly to see if they have a cultural resource office that could recommend a culture-bearer for you to interview.

Hi LA Culture Net - could you please ask these people in the group not to reply to all? I’m a BIPOC artist and applied anthropologist who teaches at the university level… I understand how people feel a certain way about these identity topics, but this debate maybe shouldn’t be sent to all members? Thank you so much for your time and consideration. I really appreciate it.?
