Collections and Archives Assistant (Part-Time) Vincent Price Art Museum Foundation

Pay Range: $19–21/hour (based on experience); 32 hours per week

Term: Temporary, grant-funded position through May 2026

Summary: The Collections and Archives Assistant supports the ongoing care, organization, and accessibility of VPAM’s permanent collection and archives. This individual should have a solid understanding of standard museum practices, be proficient with collections management systems, and demonstrate a strong commitment to long-term preservation of diverse artworks and materials.
This role is part of the Collections Team and reports directly to the Foundation’s Executive Director, with input and collaboration from the Registrar, Archivist, and Collections Coordinator. The position requires someone who is a strong team player and comfortable working with staff, contractors, and photographers. Basic knowledge and application of best practices for art handling, installation, storage, and condition reporting are essential.
Note: Current students and alumni of ELAC, the ELAC Museum Studies Certificate Program, and the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) are encouraged to apply.

Duties:
- Assist with inventorying of the VPAM’s collections.
- Enter metadata and descriptions into the collections database.
- Update and maintain catalog records.
- Support general archival duties including processing and digitizing physical records for preservation and accessibility.
- Assist staff and photographers in creating digital images of cataloged objects.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
- Associate’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Museum Studies, Fine Arts, Cultural Studies, Literature, English, Art History, Arts Administration, or a related field is preferred.
- Experience working in a museum, archive, or gallery setting.
- Knowledge of best practices and procedures in art handling, storage, and condition reporting.

Skills:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Suite, Google Workspace, and collections management software (embARK by Gallery Systems preferred).
- Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to multitask.
- Ability to multitask and work collaboratively with others.

Work Environment + Physical Requirements:This role is primarily based in VPAM’s collections vault and storage areas. Physical requirements include:
- Extended periods of sitting, standing, and walking.
- Handling, reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
- Ability to climb ladders and lift up to 40 pounds.
- Frequent use of a computer with repetitive hand and wrist movements.
