The Japanese American Cultural and Community Center
(JACCC) presents FAMILY FUN FEST a full weekend of
Japanese, Japanese American and Hawaiian cultural and
sports activities for the entire family on Saturday
and Sunday, May 12 & 13, 2001.
The festival includes the 18TH ANNUAL CHILDRENS DAY
CELEBRATION, MOTHERS DAY HAWAIIAN STYLE, the AJA
GALLERY EXHIBITION, and the first ever mainland
concert by the acclaimed LIM FAMILY from Hawaii. All
events take place at the JACCC (including the Japan
America Theatre, JACCC Plaza and the Doizaki Gallery),
located at 244 S. San Pedro St. in the Little Tokyo
area of Downtown Los Angeles. For further event

CHILDRENS DAY CELEBRATION - Saturday, May 12 from 8
am to 4 pm in the JACCC Plaza. This full day of
hands-on sports and art activities for kids is
designed in honor of the traditional Japanese
Childrens Day Celebration, Kodomo- no-Hi. Throughout
the day, children will have the opportunity to run the
Chibi-K Fun Run (a mini-marathon), shoot hoops and
learn from local college athletes, make a koi or carp
from handmade paper and more! Special participatory
art activities for Childrens Day include: a 10 am
1pm comic book signing of Usagi Yojimbo by author and
illustrator Stan Sakai; a 12 noon 3 pm papermaking
workshop; and a 12 noon 3pm calligraphy workshop.
Special sporting events for aspiring athletes include:
Chibi-K: Kids for Kids Fun Run - Early Saturday
morning, May 12 children ages 4-12 will fill the
streets of Little Tokyo in this mini-marathon where
everyone is a winner. Early registration is
recommended. Registration fees: JACCC Members $10 /
General $20 / Day-of Registration $25.
AND the San Tai San: 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament and
Skillz Competition Clinics - San Pedro Street will be
transformed into basketball courts in preparation for
the 3rd Annual San Tai San: 3 on 3 Basketball
Tournament for children ages 8-13. Special guest pros
for the kids to warm up with, learn from and play with
are college all-stars Lindsay Yamasaki, from Stanford
University Womens Basketball and Natalie Nakase, from
UCLA Womens Basketball.
San Tai San Team registration fee: JACCC Members $50 /
Non Members $60.
Skillz Competition Registration fees: $10 individual
registration, FREE to all San Tai San registered
participants.
GALLERY EXHIBITION
Also on Saturday, May 13, from 11 am 4 pm is the AJA
Heritage Exhibition in the Doizaki Gallery. This
exhibit focuses on Japanese American pioneer artists,
John Miyauchi and Momo Nagano. The John Miyauchi
retrospective will feature some major achievements of
his design career including his work for clients such
as Exxon, Chevron, RTD and the Girl Scouts of America.
The Momo Nagano exhibition features weavings from
the local artisan from 1964 to the present. Gallery
admission is $3. JACCC members are free.
MOTHERS DAY HAWAIIAN STYLE
FAMILY FUN FEST continues on Sunday, May 13, from 11
am to 4 pm with Mothers Day Hawaiian Style and the
Asian Pacific Art & Crafts Faire also on the JACCC
Plaza. Dont miss this unique opportunity to celebrate
Mothers Day Hawaiian style and be a part of this
showcase of traditional performers and artisans from
the Hawaiian community. Experience a myriad of
cultural arts activities, hands-on Hawaiian crafts,
Hawaiian entertainment and Asian food, crafts and
vendor booths. Activities include: performances by
Southern Californias local Hawaiian halaus (Hawaiian
dance groups) traditional craft workshops, games and
much more. Admission is FREE!

THE LIM FAMILY OF HAWAII IN CONCERT
Family Fun Fest wraps up with a concert by the Lim
Family with special guest Mike Kaawa on Sunday, May
13, at 4 pm at the Japan America Theatre. This
mainland concert premiere by all the members of the
celebrated Lim family brings true inspiration to
traditional Hawaiian music. The group are highly
acclaimed musicians and have won numerous awards on
the Hawaiian islands. Two of their six albums won the
coveted Na Hoku Hanohano Award twice in the 1980s.
They are currently working on their seventh album No
Na Hanauna (For the Generations). Special guest
artist, Mike Kaawa, formerly of Na Keaonimana, will
join in this rare appearance. Tickets are: $25, $23;
JACCC Members $23, $21; Groups $21 and can be
purchased through the Japan America Theatre Box Office
at 213-680-3700. The Box Office is open Monday -
Saturday from 12 noon to 5 pm and Sundays on
performance days from 12 noon.
