Dear neighbors, I think almost anyone who has a large (250-300 liter) LP (liquid petroleum) gas tank in Los Labradores has a gas gauge similar to the one in these photos. [Gauge face] [Note the dark round magnet in the center of the back side of the gauge.] This gauge is called a “float gauge”, with a magnet on the back. Here's how it measures the percentage of LP gas in your tank: - Inside the liquid propane tank, there is a float attached to a mechanical arm. This float rises and falls with the level of liquid propane. There is a magnet on the float inside the tank which interacts with the magnet in the external gauge. This interaction causes the needle on the gauge to move, indicating the level of propane inside the tank. - The gauge is calibrated to show the percentage of the tank's total capacity filled with propane. The dial reads from 5% (nearly empty) to 95% (nearly full). [For example, 20% of 300 liters = 60 liters of liquid petroleum in the tank.]. For safety, tanks are typically filled to a maximum of 80-85% to allow for expansion of the gas. The tank should be refilled when it falls below 15%-20%. If the tank pressure falls to about 5%, you will start getting air in the gas lines to your gas appliances, causing pilot lights to go off and requiring the lines to be purged of air after filling the tank. So this is how the floating magnetic gauge works. Clearly, any additional magnetic material placed near the gauge, or strategically placed on the tank, could interfere with the accuracy of the gauge. I hope this helps clear up the uncertainty regarding magnets and gas tanks.

Dear Friends, My new gas company, Sonigas, just discovered a magnet that my old propane company, Imperial, had placed on my gas tank to make it seem as if there was less gas in my tank than there really was so they could charge me more. The magnet also presents danger of explosion, as one cannot get a true reading of the gas level which can be overfilled easily. See attached photo for the magnet. There were rumors about this cheating by Imperial Gas but now I have proof. I’ve been severely overcharged for about a year and am sharing this message so that you can protect yourself from this unscrupulous company. I now use Sonigas, who discovered the magnet, just minutes ago. Sonigas is highly recommended by several of my neighbors as an ethical, professional, and technically competent propane provider. Good afternoon and thank you for your input, Gretel. Obviously, I’m not “stealing” any customers and neither is Sonigas. I am simply reporting the absolute facts of an unfortunate incident that includes the physical evidence of a magnet that was under my gauge and witnessed by my assistant just a few hours ago today. I don’t spread in rumors, and I am the aggrieved party here. It’s my right to share my factual experience and supporting evidence for the benefit of my neighbors and friends, who are free to make their own judgments and decisions. It’s Imperial’s responsibility to investigate and be accountable for the sake of their business. Again, I do not know the Imperial truck number; and do nor know the driver’s name; but I have used Imperial since moving to Labradores. I have provided a written complaint to Imperial already. Of course, I exercise my absolute right to receive propane delivery services from any company I prefer. I leave it to Imperial to do an investigation; and institute better monitoring of its drivers; it’s not my role. I have done my civic duty by sharing my factual experience with my community.
