It's hard to believe that we're entering "wintering" hummingbird season for 2024-2025! In most years by now, the first Rufous or Buff-bellied Hummingbird have shown up, but I haven't heard of any sightings yet. Keep an eye out! You may be the lucky host.

I will continue to accept reports of your wintering hummingbirds this season - please email me at Erik.Johnson AT Audubon.org to submit your observations with the following information:
- Your name
- Your address (town only is acceptable)
- First observed (FO) date
- Species
- Age (Adult, immature, unknown)
- Sex (Male, female, unknown)
- Photos if available and/or whether banded, when and by whom.

Please note that Ruby-throated Hummingbirds aren't counted as "wintering" except when present between November 15 and February 28. For all other species, I will accept reports from any date.

I am also pleased to share the summary of the winter hummingbird season from 2023-24 below, as well as a By Parish summary attached. Please let me know if you have any corrections or additions.

Driving up I-49 from Alexandria to Natchitoches yesterday mid-morning I observed 5 swallow-tailed kites flying near the east side of the highway mostly 1 or 2 exits south of Natchitoches. 3 singles and one double.

Hello Labirders-
Lesser Black-backed Gulls (LBBGs) have been reported all spring and
summer at Grand Isle and other coastal locations. In the last couple of
days I'm seeing reports of "juveniles." Be aware that use of "juvenile" or
"juvenal" implies an individual that was hatched in 2024. It would be very
unusual for true juvenile LBBGs to arrive this far south in July-August.
So, these reports probably pertain to 1-2 year olds. Although LBBGs have
become sort of "ho-hum," gull ID remains an ID challenge and so it would
still be important to photograph as many as possible, including flight
shots that show important ID characters. If photos are not possible then
please include good descriptions.

kiosk. The yellow gate is locked normally. You can walk in (or bike or atv)
any time. For this event they let us drive and park. Then they take us to
the observation tower in ATV’s. Normally it’s about a 1.5 mile walk each
way.

Have to be caught basking or breathing at surface. Razorbacks obviously most often captured. Young Mississippi Map Turtles second most caught species. This particular eagle really likes the razorbacks.
