Jumpers and zero-ohm resistors 27
How are jumpers included in a board design? Do they appear in the schematic or only in the PCB layout? Are they to be treated as zero-ohm resistors, perhaps? -- OOO - Own Opinions Only Best Wishes John Woodgate Keep trying Virus-free.www.avg.com

Cannot install KiKit on v8.06 under win 10
I installed v8.06 and installed kikit via PCM then when I tried to run the PCB editor I go the prompt to install kikit via the Kicad command prompt as usual. I entered the command "pip install kikit" and then tried to run "kikit --help" and got the following ... File "C:\Users\Bob\Documents\KiCad\8.0\3rdparty\Python311\site-packages\kikit\common.py", line 13, in <module> from shapely.geometry import LinearRing File "C:\Users\Bob\Documents\KiCad\8.0\3rdparty\Python311\site-packages\shapely\__init__.py", line 13, in <module> from shapely.lib import GEOSException # NOQA ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ImportError: numpy.core.multiarray failed to import C:\Users\Bob\Documents\KiCad\8.0> Is there any way around this ??? Saving BOM .CSV file 7
I am trying to save the BOM as a .CSV file into the folder with the other KiCad files, but it doesn't save. Wherever I try to save it to, I get a message box that says 'Do you want to use a path relative to C:\----------filter KiCad\?' and whether I answer YES, or NO and enter a different file location, the file seems not to be saved anywhere. Please advise. OOO - Own Opinions Only Best Wishes John Woodgate Keep trying Virus-free.www.avg.com

Multiple parallel SMD capacitors - one footprint to home them 7
Hi all I'm drawing up a Low Pass Filter for a HF power amp. The topology of the filter requires some parallel capacitors to achieve the required capacitances. In most cases 4 capacitors (sometimes 6) will make up to final result, for example, 100p, 47p, 47p and a 22p = 216p (pretty close to what I need) To create a complete BOM using the component capacitors, I need to include each capacitor in the schematic ... no big issue except for the footprints. I was using multi component footprints to make it easier to position the capacitor group on the PCB (as per image embedded). If I give each capacitor a single footprint, then it starts to get pretty messy with overlapping pads in a confined space. If I give each capacitor a multi component footprint, I have a huge number of footprints layered on top of each other, also not idea. Below is the type of footprint I'd prefer to use ... My question is; What is the best way to achieve a clean PCB design and still have a comprehensive BOM?

If the depicted 4x1206 assembly is in your library as a single component, then I'd just set its value to: 100pF + 47pF + 47pF + 22pF and add a line of e.g. awk to split that up into 4 components on BOM generation. (Your arithmetic has them all in parallel, so placement is arbitrary within the assembly, I figure.) Mind you, if hand assembling a small number of units, I'd also consider just stacking them in a small layer cake, if soldering didn't become too fiddly. It seems easier to avoid adding stray capacitance while tweaking to the nearest pF, if unnecessary copper areas are avoided. Erik

Pin length field in the Pin table 14
I noticed, that in the new releases of the KiCAD Symbol Editor, disappeared the Pin length field in the Pin table. Is the just a mistake and can be the problem cured?

Spurious ERC Warning 5
I have a schematic that is throwing a spurious warning. The schematic is hierarchical, with multiple instances of a LED driver IC with associated LEDs. To allow each of the LED drivers to be identified on the I2C bus, I have exported the three address-setting pins and the 5V rail (each driver is on its own filtered 5V supply). Each address-setting pin can be connected to ground, 5V, or left floating, all three having a significance to setting the I2C address. The eeschema ERC has no problems with the address lines being marked with a no-connection flag, but it chokes on the 5V output being so marked, giving a warning, 'A pin with a "no connection" flag is connected'. If I remove the no-connection flag from the 5V output, I then get an error, 'Pin not connected'. I could just ignore the warning, but since I don't understand what is the problem, I thought I would first ask if anyone knows. Hopefully the screen-shot I've attached is visible to you and clarifies what I'm describing. OT: PCB suppliers 38
Can you please suggest a good PCB supplier for prototypes? 2 layer, through-hole, 3.5 by 2.5 inches? Speed rather more important than cost. I am in England. -- OOO - Own Opinions Only Best Wishes John Woodgate Keep trying Virus-free.www.avg.com

Courtyards and silk screens 10
Can I safely ignore 'errors' abut courtyards overlapping and 'warnings' about silkscreens (the outlines of components) overlapping? Some courtyards are quite a lot larger than the parts, and I don't know what their function is. The boards will be hand-populated and soldered. -- OOO - Own Opinions Only Best Wishes John Woodgate Keep trying Virus-free.www.avg.com

All my reference designators have disappeared?? 4
Using Kicad 8.0.5 Somehow, I've made all my reference designators invisible... And, I can't get them to come back. I've been through Edit->Text and Graphics Properties (which I'm accustomed to using to change text sizes) but I can't get the ref des text to return. I've looked everywhere I can find, and everything seems as normal. Any guesses on what I might be missing? Thx Doug

How to print a BOM? 8
Clicking Tools->Generate_BOM->Generate landed me with the first XML file I've produced in over 40 years of computing, and I'm struggling with finding a Linux utility that can make something printable out of it. (Or readable, for that matter.) Firefox just displays the raw XML source text, as does LibreOffice. An "apt-cache search xml | more" has yet to ring any bells on what might make sense of the badly obfuscated BOM. Is there an easy way out of this cul de sac? (E.g. plain text, postscript, or PDF?) (2018, so > > pretty recent.) > > To be fair, at age 70, anything post millennial seems pretty recent, and even hurrying occurs at a measured pace, not helped by having to stop for extra coffee to remember where that tube of triacs went to. (When the board's populated & debugged, and the firmware done, then (after coffee and TimTams, I'll update kicad - All things in their season, I figure.) AND that Kicad 5.02 is still delivering well is testament to its developers too. I have though managed to condense the 1978 lines of random data dump, produced by the loosely named "Generate BOM" clicky thing, to 54 lines of actual BOM, using a few script lines I've put into ~/bin/xml2bom: #!/bin/bash # Converts an XML BOM from kicad to xml2's internal "flat" format, # then extracts Part Number, Description, and Package information # from kicad's 97% verbiage, leaving a useful BOM. xml2 < $1 | awk --field-separator '=' ' $1 ~ /@ref$/ { p = $2 } $1 ~/value$/ { Desc[p] = $2 } $1 ~ /footprint$/ { n = split($2,A,/:/) Pack[p] = A[2] } END { for (i in Desc) printf("%s\t%s\t%s\n",i,Desc[i],Pack[i]) } ' It does put R10 and R11 before R1, and I have yet to weave a "sort" incantation to fix that. The rest is good enough to start with: ... C7 47 nF C_Rect_L16.5mm_W4.7mm_P15.00mm_MKT C8 10 nF C_Rect_L16.5mm_W4.7mm_P15.00mm_MKT C9 100 nF C_0805_2012Metric_Pad1.15x1.40mm_HandSolder X1 4 MHz Crystal_HC50_Vertical IC1 ATmega16-16AU TQFP-44_10x10mm_P0.8mm IC2 LP2950-5.0 TO-252-2 IC3 MOC3052 DIP-6_W8.89mm_SMDSocket_LongPads IC4 PS2701 SO-4_4.4x3.6mm_P2.54mm ... A trivial tweak of the three pattern regexes would allow it to digest the raw XML, obviating need for xml2, but the XML was rather daunting at first sight. Erik

Hi there, do you have the downloading file of KiCad Version 2? I collected some schematic files that seem to be KiCad 2.0, but I cannot find version2 on KiCad official website.(I believe those files belong to version2 because they start with "EESchema Schematic File Version 2" in Notepad.)
