Problems with Audio plug2

开云体育

This symbol is in quite a lot of trouble. First, it's HUGE, compared with the Audio Jack 2 symbol, so the schematic looks very odd indeed. Second, the blue text says 'Jack', not 'Plug'. Third, the description is the one for Audio Plug 4 (TRRS). I've tried to modify it to look more realistic, and I have the modified symbol saved in the same folder as the schematic, but the original symbol appears on the schematic.

You might find it beneficial to create your own personal library of schematics parts. Then you can copy parts into it and modify them as you wish, and use them in all your designs. You can add your library to the appropriate KiCad path and it will always be there for you.

How are you (attempting to) update your symbol in the schematic?

Typically it is right-click on symbol in schematic, select Update Symbol... menu item, set things as appropriate...

Thank you. I intend to do that, but at present I have only this one modified symbol, so it is in the same folder as the .pro and other files. I do not know how to add this to the 'appropriate KiCad path'. Please advise.

I am not trying to update: I'm trying to add the modified symbol instead of the original. On your advice, I added the original symbol, right-clicked and a small panel opened: Cancel, Zoom, Grid.

All right. It seems like you want to create and use your own symbols so this is unfortunately the perfect time to create your own schematic library. Rather than try and explain here, may I refer you to the KiCad online documentation:

specifically Tutorial Part 4: Custom Symbols and Footprints.

Ah. The 'Cancel | Zoom | Grid' menu appeared because you did not select the symbol beforehand. I should have mentioned that! Select the symbol to make it active, then right-click to get the full menu.

I selected the symbol, but the pane that opens only offers symbols from the KiCad library. I see no way of selecting the symbol file in the Project folder. I will try reading the Help.

Yes, I think the best way forward is for you to define your own schematic library, as I've mentioned. That will set you up well for more convenient and organized work in future.

Agreed, regardless of what the design software is, ypu should only use parts and symbols that you have verified as gop an have put them into your own libs. That way no update will upset them and any changes that you make will not be messed about with.

John, if I am understanding you correctly, you may still have the 'add symbols' tool activated (your cursor would look like an opamp symbol next to the crosshairs) thus only letting you see this when right-clicking...

If you hit 'Esc' or the 'Select items' tool, you'll see an arrow for your cursor (with the crosshairs).? Now select your symbol and right-click(RMB) and you should see...

Thanks, Brian, but that's not the problem. I am not sure which message you are replying to, because you haven't cited any of my message.? I have been advised how to configure 'libraries' so that my? modified symbol file can be added to the schematic. I am surprised that the library management is (counter-intuitively) under 'Preferences'; I think it's so fundamental that it should be a top-level tab.
