Can't move silkscreen markings and uploading to this group
Hi All,
I have a small design which has hit a problem. With KiCAD 6.07 I can't move silkscreen layer text in the PCB editor. Never encountered this before, and loading up other boards does allow me to move the text. It's small so I could start again. Not tried earlier KiCADs but did try the Mac OS/PC windows versions and still the same. 2 questions - Anyone know anything that can cause just the silkscreen to lock? I can move parts. It would be nice to upload the files (40k) to this group so anyone can look, but is that still possible? Thanks, Rob. |
This happens if the module is locked, but you generally get a pop-up
warning when you try to move Just to be clear, I point to the text then left click and the text highlights It also gets a small move icon next to it. It also works if you point at the text right click and select move. Apart from when locked I can't get it to fail. Another thought: Is this an old project? might need saving in the new format first Andy On Thu, 25 Aug 2022 06:02:03 -0700 "applewiz2000" <rob@...> wrote: Hi All, |
Hi Andy
Just discovered why after poking every layer and selection button in sight. If the 'selection filter' (bottom right) doesn't have 'All items' ticked it refuses to select the text. With everything except 'All items' it doesn't allow silkscreen selection. What a difference one little tick makes! Wasn't there movie about that? Anyway, any opinions on what's happening with the files section? Thanks, Rob. |
Hi Rob,
I will have to remember that little snipit - luckily I don't normally mess with the filter settings, and if I do I have a habit of turning them all on again if I do change them. The files section is still there, so it should work via the web interface. I also see quite a few attachments to the mails I receive so that method also works. (I have set my groups-io setup to deliver the posts to me via email then the mail program sorts it all out.) Andy On Thu, 25 Aug 2022 11:21:53 -0700 "applewiz2000" <rob@...> wrote: Hi Andy |
Hi Andy,
Many groups have netiquette for not sending attachments. This group has a lot of old files, but most are small, so don't force the group to start paying extra for storage. I have no idea how 'All items' got unchecked but it only gets carried on a per-PCB Editor file basis. Mac-PC compatibility is also working well. Cheers, Rob. |
They have radically changed how editing occurs in that items must be "in scope" in order to edit them. You can edit front silkscreen items by first clicking on the f.silkscreen layer to make it "in scope". This procedure also applies when editing the f.cu, b.cu and f.zip as well.??

There are plusses and minuses to this new feature. Okn the plus side, one doesn't inadvertently edit an item because you just select the layer to be edited first. The downside is that it drastically adds key clicks and thus slows the editing process.? Make sense?

Hi John,
I agree the selection system in KiCAD6 is a bit long-winded. Everyone has their preference, and usually the one they got used to with a previous package. My 'previous package' was Multisim/ultiboard which allowed clever mulitple editing. Selecting multiple parts then 'properties' (E in KiCAD) would allow editing of all relevant common properties. Something I miss, but I don't miss the cost, windows only, and apalling library of multisim/ultiboard. National Instruments are clearly milking it under the Design Studio name, but we are drifting off topic. -Rob |
