As a rule I think it is bad practice to have spaces in names. However, I agree the documentation should make it clear what characters are allowed.

If it does not already exist, why not using the "file" section of this newsgroup on the web as a start, where everybody who wish to add their own creation may upload it?
And something like a footer signature on every message that is post from the group may point to that location for the newcomers to know and as a reminder...
Should have some kind of classification and rules to avoid a big mess.
I have set up a footer that will be added to all future messages (including this one hopefully) that asks people to contribute their symbols and modules to the library folder of the group files section..As far as classification is concerned I would advise contributors to create a sub directory with a unique name and place their files in it.

See my earlier post on this topic. I have set up a library folder in the files section of the group for just this purpose. Feel free to create your own sub folders and contribute your work.

the second set of coordinates is an auxilary coordinate. you can set your own origin by hitting the space bar. notice the second set resets to 0,0.

Module disappears after editing

Hi,
All the following observations pertain to PCBnew
1.
It seems module names may not contain spaces! If one does, it has
disastrous consequences like the module vanishing into thin air
instead of being saved.

I created a footprint for a 16x2 LCD, and named it LCD 16x2 small,
when (i realise now) I should have named it LCD_16x2_small. I saved
it, and when I tried to retrieve it again, Kicad complained it couldnt
find it, though it is seen in the module list of my library.

This bug needs to fixed/ documented.

2.
In the module editor, when one changes the position of the anchor, the
module temporarily disappears from view. One has to zoom out quite a
bit to get it into view again, then zoom in to resume work. This
happens especially when the zoom level is high.

3.
While positioning the cursor, and moving it with the keyboard, with a
low zoom, the resolution is not good, but in high zoom, the resolution
is better. Is this intentional? The zoom value should have nothing to
do with the cursor step resolution. While placing lines etc, one
watches the x,y coordinates, irrespective of the zoom level.

4.
On the bottom status bar, the x,y coordinates of the cursor are shown
twice. why is this so?

Thanks,

--Royce

Pad Properties

Hi,
In Pad properties, There are two sets of values DeltaX & Y, and Offset
X & Y.

They are normally 0.00. Changing Delta X & Y has no effect at all.
Changing Offset X & Y offsets the pad from it's centre.

My query is: What is the purpose of these values & in what situations
must they be used?

Thanks,

--Royce.

Looks like you did all the obvious things but it is odd the Eschema prints OK.

I'm using windows 98, (perhaps that's the problem).
Pass. Anyone else using Kicad under Win98??

I have Fedora Core 4 just installed, perhaps I should try installing
the hp printer drivers in that and try it in linux.
Worth a try just to narrow it down.

It looks like looking at the board behind prison bars!

I've tried different printers, inkjet and laser with the same result.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Works fine for me under Linux. What scale did you use and did you do
printer setup first?

Re: Congratulations

Thanks!

glad to make the 100th! I am radioamateur (F4EXB) and plan to use
KiCad for this activity. I was introduced to KiCad by a fellow
radioamateur at the local radio club.

My name is actually Ed(ouard) Griffiths (couldn't get egriffiths in
Yahoo) and I live in Antibes in the South East of France.

I've made my first steps in KiCad and found it relatively easy to use
but I didn't have time to go beyond basic schematics. I plan to
release a small PCB for PIC programming at the club.

Cheers! Edouard.

Re: New Release Candidate

Hello all,

How does one download the latest 'release candidate'?

Is it from:
ftp://www.lis.inpg.fr/uploads/kicad/Release_Candidate/

I downloaded the last Kicad version from here.

But now, when I try this link, I am asked for a password!

Can anyone explain?

Thanks,

Pad Properties

HI,

In the pad properties window, it would be great to have a 'Inch/mm'
selection button so we can the view/set the dimensions in both scales
on the fly. Presently one has to close the window, change the scale in
the left toolbar, and again reselect the pad properties.

Also, this system could be provided in any window where a dimension is
viewed/set.

Thanks,

Rectangular hole

cshoaff

Hi All,
I saw an earlier post about the same topic, but I do not think it was
fully resolved. Is there a way to make such a hole with this software?
I am trying to make a pcb that will operate in the 10 GHz range. The
part I need to use must go through a cut-out in the pcb. Trying to
make such a hole using a series of vias does not seem like a very
clean solution.
Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Chris n9rin

Yes, I am aware of that.

I was refering to the CUT/COPY icons on the tool bar.

Try doing Cut/Copy using the toolbar icons. You'll know what I mean.

Thanks,

If you want to use cut copy icons, you must deactivate the "auto pan"
option in preference menu.

As an alternate option, you can enter the block command with holding the
shift key (copy) or shift+ctrl keys (delete)
See doc eeschema 2.2.2

I created a board wich uses two different drills for vias: 50/28 and

Is there any way to generate the drill file with the two sizes that i
used to create the board?

The very last release candidate i have uploaded
(kicad-release_candidate-2005-10-04.tgz or .zip) has an experimental
feature to do it.
The Pop up menu (on a via) allow you to enter an alternate drill value
for this via.
This alternate value can be "exported" to other vias which have the same
size.
You can have many alternates values.
The default value is used for all the via which have no alternate driil
value

Be aware this is an experimental feature, not very well tested.
In "preference menu" is added an option to show the via holes.

I will do that, but I want to contribute complete devices and not just the stuff to add to the libraries.

I think that is a good idea. I have created a library folder in the
files section of the group for this purpose. Please create your own
subfolders and donate your libraries.
