Re: Problems with Audio plug2

I am not trying to update: I'm trying to add the modified symbol instead of the original. On your advice, I added the original symbol, right-clicked and a small panel opened: Cancel, Zoom, Grid.

Thank you. I intend to do that, but at present I have only this one modified symbol, so it is in the same folder as the .pro and other files. I do not know how to add this to the 'appropriate KiCad path'. Please advise.

This symbol is in quite a lot of trouble. First, it's HUGE, compared with the Audio Jack 2 symbol, so the schematic looks very odd indeed. Second, the blue text says 'Jack', not 'Plug'. Third, the description is the one for Audio Plug 4 (TRRS). I've tried to modify it to look more realistic, and I have the modified symbol saved in the same folder as the schematic, but the original symbol appears on the schematic.

Thank you. Which version of KiCad do you have? I'm not surprised about the LTspice 'dots', that are square.

Many thanks, Brian. That works a treat.
I'll get the hang of this over time. The trick is managing to make a
board before I'm fully up to speed. (My new off-grid solar installation
needs a couple of power diverters, one for the existing HWS (water
"boiler" in UK, I think.), one to be added. There's ample sun now, but winter is coming. Responding to frequency shift power availability signalling, and using low interference "burst fire" of the triac, are interesting exercises, as is reliable zero crossing detection. We'll see how it goes. There's sure to be some learning.)

Which version of KiCad are you using? Just so the best advice can be given.

An exit & restart shows that the extra 4 widths are now known to the

All I need is to be able to select one of the added widths, then use
that for any chosen airwire, in the standard laying out process. Can
Kicad do that? Somehow?

One flummoxed Erik.

Re: Promulgating a package edit to Pcbnew

Sorry for the noise. The Germans have a name for it, Vorführungseffekt?, if memory serves: The moment you attempt to demonstrate something, it goes awry. I've found the "Exchange Footprint: Change" button. A way to make that the default would be good. Maybe an update will?

Now I can chase a Case 730C-4 package for the MOC3052. (Who'd play videogames, when there's real stuff to chase? And the goal of a (working) PCB at the end.)

? Hmmm now, three decades later the internet seems to prefer Vorführeffekt.

Erik

Promulgating a package edit to Pcbnew?

Using Properties -> Edit Footprint, I've changed the package for an LP2950 to Package_TO_SOT_SMD:TO-252-2, found using the "Select" button. I've subsequently run "Generate Netlist" in Eeschema, and "Read Netlist" in Pcbnew, but there the package shown remains the default TO92, somehow.

When I hit 'e' on the component in Eeschema, Fields: Footprint: shows the new
Package_TO_SOT_SMD:TO-252-2, as does the "Field Value" when that field is selected. But on the left, Library Symbol: shows Regulator_Linear:LP2950-5.0_TO92. Whether that's a contributor to the new package not reaching Pcbnew, is beyond my ken.

I thought I'd done well to figure out that DPAK is TO252 in Kicad, but now we need to make it stick.

While on packages, is there a quick way to find a 6 pin DIL package with flat-footed short pins, making a 0.3" wide DIL SMD? The MOC3052 devices I have are that funny package. The datasheet shows that as Case 730C-4. I tried selecting an Osram SFH9x0x package, but that also doesn't make it to Pcbnew, so I can see if it's the right size. I could maybe solder them onto a through-board drilled pad layout, but it would be inelegant - or is that what folk did with the bigger package?

I'll figure out how to update my Kicad version. That might help.

Erik

Re: 2024 KiCad user survey

I've tried accessing the survey with Vivaldi, Firefox, and Pale Moon.
With all three I was able to get to the first question, but I didn't go
any further as I've already completed the survey. Maybe try again now
some time has passed? Someone may have been doing some server
housekeeping.

No GUI was used to send this email, BTW :)

Hi Erik, I too am 70 and have used Kicad for a long while. You can drag instead of move, and connections stretch.

This last year I have had to use Altium for one project, and imho Kicad is easier to use for anything that has only one PCB and does not require that wiring harnesses can be designed as part of the overall project in the same CAD tool.

In any event, I'm just familiarising on a first serious Kicad project,
after years of using Eagle. I'm impressed to find not only ATmegas, but
also a 6-pin DIL header already pin-identified as AVR-ISP-6, so no need
to remember where miso, mosi, reset, and sck go. Nifty.

It's taking an hour or two to put into muscle memory how to rotate, that
flip is mirror - about (not in) X or Y, that an Escape is necessary to
leave the clutches of selected zoom when you now want to select a
component group, and that wires do not stretch when that group is moved
- they just disconnect.

The on-line manual is a life saver, especially for a 70 yo who does not
find most GUIs even remotely intuitive. I find it's the user who has to
be programmed. Eagle was stranger, I think. The fact that I came across
just to have a look, but am staying, at least so far, says it all, perhaps.

It'll be interesting when it comes time to send off the PCB files.
