I haven't used Kicad in a year or so. But I have an upcoming project that will probably need to be done in Kicad.
Is it best to totally remove all the Kicad binary before upgrading/reinstalling the latest version?
I'm using a iMac. I never thought of running Kicad on a Raspberry Pi until I saw this question.
Thanks, ? ? Mark

How are you doing it? Did you remove the old version first? Post some error messages with details..__

Re: So what am I doing wrong here? [1 Attachment]
Be careful of names here: Vcc is also the name of a power port that you will place on the circuit. For ERC and so on a power in needs to connect to a power out somewhere. The problem which I think you will eventually remember, as it's a trap we all fall into, is that in most cases you need to tell the system that a net is powered. Somewhere on the circuit, add a gnd power port and also add a power flag to it. Likewise do the same for Vcc if there are no other power outs provided. All the power flag does is tell ERC that the net has power, that makes everything happy. I get a different behaviour (linux) the scroll ring (I use a trackball) zooms the display even if the cursor is over the vert or horiz slider bars. Have a fiddle with preferences / pan and zoom centre and warp cursor on zoom - try switching that off and see if that suits your needs better. Andy On 06 Jan 2019 18:32:11 +0000 "bpc2296@... Hi Jay,
In Kicad there is a difference between installed libraries and loaded
libraries.
A library is installed when it is stored in some place in your local or
remote hard disk. But it is ignored by Kicad unless it is loaded into a

Only loaded libraries are available for projects. A library can be
global, i.e., available for all projects, or project specific, available
only to a particular project.
If a library is loaded into a project but the library was removed from
the hard disk, kicad will be still looking for it. You need to remove
that library from the sym-lib-table for symbols or from the fp-lib-table
for footprints. Use the Manage Symbol(footprint) Library enty for this
purpose.

I have uninstalled/reinstalled 3 times and each time I do it, KiCAD screams at me as I try to create something that the aliases for those 3 libraries are missing\. I can click past that but good lord, how the heck does one get rid of those lib files I created. I have searched across the drive after an uninstall with wild cards and deleted everything tied to KiCAD and the project name... and I get the message KiCAD completely uninstalled or is it????...well, I have no idea what to do with this error every time I try to create a new symbol....odd how I can't delete something I created.....extremely frustrating....and as a new comer, the folder structure would be a lot better with a power point showing default paths, showing what in the world is happening and where is it going ...5 hours down the drain\. Funny my Orcad suite before they sold out was the same way...file management needs to be shown not only in words but pictorially...KiCAD with 3D viewer and the Freecad plug in was fine..got it all working but something went nuts AND I AM sure it was me. So here is the takeaway..(1) why can't I reinstall? KICAD and have it behave as if I never had it,...this is the oddest thing since the uninstall says completely removed....obviously I don't get....or (2) how does one delete the dopey lib files I created when using the symbol library editor. They just never go away, Recommendation to the writers regarding file management.....the? manuals appear to be a great effort but when generating or placing files for the program to run, a flow diagram w/program interaction is really needed" Thanks for any assistance Jay Jkobelin at gmail dot com

Re: My lib files cant be removed while using Symbol Library Editor
If you managed to create the libs then fine. Check via the shell and see if there is any text in the various library files. The modules are built using simple text commands, so are easy enough to see.
You have to tell kicad where to look for libs pcbnew > preferences > footprint library manager
As I don't want ANY kicad libs at all, I deleted all the kicad libs (the github ones) and added my own local libs.
If you create new additional libs then you have to add there here afterwards.
Once added kicad should then find them. (That used to require a reload of kicad, but I don't think the newer versions need this)
After that the editing of mod files follows the normal methods that kicad has used for ages. Find the module to work on, edit and save, remembering to set the working library to whatever you need first.
The same applies to deleting modules, you need to set the working lib first, and things should work.

Re: Arbitrary copper [1 Attachment]
Remember to measure the temperature. Cu has a significant positive tempco. (A product I worked on used battery cables as current sensors in a vehicular application. Copper's tempco was a challenge.)

Hi, I have done footprints with extra copper on the surface. Just draw them on the silk screen layer, then edit by moving them to the required copper layer. I have even copied them over and move them to the mask layer. This is how you can make fancy copper pads on one side of the board only. I have done that with Kicad v. 4.07 but have not tried it on 5.0 Good luck . This reminds me my gEDA time, when I had to do such fancy stuff... but thanks for the idea. I've come up with adding extra pads. If you are interested in a 0.001 Ohm resistor made by copper, here is my take. Cheers, Levente
