Subject: [PhiladelphiaCountyARES] A real emergency and a ham radio success story

H I all,

?

As many of you know, I live about half the year in Almeria, Spain. Yesterday, at 12:15 PM, all power was lost, not only here in Almeria, but all of Spain and Portugal, and parts of the southern France.

?

Cell phone service continued for about another hour or so, and I was able to gather some news that it was not a local event, and the whole country was stopped. Then, the cell towers died as well.

?

I have solar panels that I bought some years ago for emergencies that never happened, but now one did. I regularly check the status of the solar batteries the panels charge and discovered that both these batteries were at 100 percent yesterday. The solar panels were ready to be deployed on my deck or rooftop should the batteries need recharging. In the bright southern Spanish sunshine, that¡¯s less than 6 hours. First, I powered one of my laptops because I wanted to continue editing an audio file for a new promotional video about my hotel, Casa Vicki, here in Almeria. I needed to download some software form Adobe, using my phone as a hotspot, but soon after I started cell service disappeared. Then I went up to my shack/office/TV studio on the top floor, and hooked up the 12 volt cigarette lighter connector form one of the batteries to the power supply posts that normally power my radio and my screw driver vertical antenna. I measured the voltage first and found it was an acceptable 13.6 volts. While the power supply remained in the off position, by connecting to the posts in the back, I illuminated the volt meter and ammeter on the front panel. No one in Spain was on the air that I could find on VHF, UHF or HF. There is a local ham radio club, but their repeater is digital and I haven¡¯t been able to access it yet.

?

As the day wore on, it became apparent that this was going to be a very long day and night.

?

At the age of 78, I make it a habit, since I live alone, to send a WhatsApp message to my kids in the US twice a day that says ¡°I¡¯m still here.¡± If they don¡¯t get it, they know to try and reach me, and who else to call if they can¡¯t. The morning message went out, but as 9:30 PM approached, the time I usually send the evening message, it was clear I wouldn¡¯t be able to communicate.

?

I rarely reach the US on HF from my screwdriver vertical and my 100 watt 991A. But I powered everything on, and tuned my antenna to the phone portion of 20 meters and went in search of someone who might let my kids now I was all right. Around 10 PM , I found the DX Net, a US based net that only accepts non US participants. The net controls, in Boston, and Roanoke Rapids North Carolina, had difficulty hearing me at first, but a station in Sardinia (IS0XGO)relayed my call sign and I joined. Propagation improved and by 11 PM I was able to transmit my health and welfare traffic to the North Carolina Net Control, Barry (N4WFU). After the net, at 11:30, he sent the message to my oldest son in Ardmore, PA, reporting that I was still here and operating with solar battery power. At 1:15 AM the lights came back on, and I checked the WhatsApp group with which I communicate with both my sons. They were very grateful for Barry¡¯s message. They had been speculating on what they should do since the couldn¡¯t reach anyone in Spain. I Am very grateful to Barry and the DX Net, and to ham radio in general.

?

Now, what could I have done better. I could have used WinLink if I had powered the computer in the shack. I thought about it, but it was too dark in my shack to start moving AC cables from the computer and the monitors to one of the batteries. I¡¯ll know better next time. (hopefully there isn¡¯t a next time.) But I¡¯m not at all certain that would have worked. The nearest Winlink setup is in Portugal which itself was blacked out. I¡¯ll now check for others in Europe that I might reach. I can generally reach other hams in the UK, France, Italy, German, Switzerland etc. ¨C so northbound is the place to search for Winlink gateways. There are a two in France, and two in Italy. Those are the closest after Lisbon, but those four are all on 80m and I¡¯m not sure I¡¯d reach them. It¡¯s worth a try soon, so ?some of you might get an email from me soon those 80m gateways. Lison is on 40m and I¡¯ve used them successfully in the past. ?

?

Alternatively, I can move the WinLink software setup to a laptop, along with the necessary drivers for USB control of the rig, but again that requires some wire re-routing in the dark. Best to plan ahead for this.

?

All in all, it was a ham radio success story and aside from the communication to my kids, it was just great to talk to other hams in the midst of this black out isolation.

?

Be well everyone, and be prepared. I never considered myself a preppie, but this experience is one to take to heart!

Re: Ten-Tec CW Net for April 21, 2025

That was me trying to check in to 80 meters, but the conditions were as bad as I can remember for a long time. I could barely hear Mike and I did hear Rich at the last minute.
Thanks to Mike for trying to work us under those conditions.

*Mike heard a ¡°GS¡± on 80 meters but was not able to get a response. I have added W5GS to the list as George normally checks in on all three bands.

?

Good morning,

?

You likely noticed Stan (W4AG), our NCS for 40 and 80 meters, was missing from the net last night. Stan was having last-minute problems with his radio.

?

I switched over to 40 meters when I could. I do apologize to anyone I missed. ??

??

With very little notice, Mike (W3TS) jumped in to cover 80 meters which was a huge help. Mike, thank you!

?

Congratulations to Bill (K8ZCT), George (W5GS), Mike (W3TS), Ted (N8TJE), Dan (KW4LQ), and Tony (VE3DWI) who made all three bands tonight. Dave (N1CGP) is recognized for making two bands.

?

Thank you to Rich (NA6F) for preparing the primary station logs for the CW and SSB Nets.

?

Easter?is a beloved holiday that we look forward to as we pull off 12 calendar pages till next year.?

For so many sweet reasons! It's the perfect excuse to gather with your favorite people, neighbors, friends and even more, "friends of friends" while indulging in the tastiest festive bites at your Easter dinner, buffet or brunch.

With the weather warming up, it's also an energetic sign that spring?is officially here and a refreshing hello, sunshine and outdoor egg hunts!

All in all, Easter fills every bunny's heart with joy. Enjoy the time as you reflect together the meaning?of Easter and ponder upon that throughout the year.?

?

Good evening,

?

A special thank you to Stan (W4AG) who is the NCS for the 40- and 80-meter nets. Dean (N2TNN), who assists the nets, was out tonight for a meeting.

?

Despite propagation predictions showing just fair conditions, we had a good overall turnout.

?

Congratulations to Mike (W3TS), Ted (N8TJE), Dave (N1CGP), Dan (KW4LQ), Bill (K8ZCT), Tony (VE3DWI), George (W5GS), and Stan (W4AG) who made three bands tonight. John (N9WZG) made two bands.

?

Thank you to NA6F who maintains the primary log for the Ten-Tec Nets. We also appreciate the efforts of our Ten Tec Net Manager, Lloyd, N2KPC.

?

Most importantly, we thank all of you who took the time from your busy schedules to check in with us. That is what makes it all worthwhile.

?

73,

Rich
