Startup Gets Stuck #startup

Recently it became necessary to reinstall Java and JMRI. First, I checked that both programs were uninstalled. I then installed Java? Version 8 Update 441 and JMRI Version 4.26+R381. Both were problem free installs. I then tried to start JMRI so I could load my roster. The Java icon and the DecoderPro icon appeared in the taskbar and the small JMRI splash screen appeared in the middle of my screen. That's as far as the startup got. I've listed my equipment below. What am I missing? I'd appreciate any help in getting started.?

Sounds like a java issue. My Win11 laptop required java 21 to run JMRI 5.4 version last year. Good luck

Richard,

You have a modern computer, but are running very old software.

Uninstall Java 8. It is a decade old now and no longer supported. Go to to download Java 17 JRE. Once that is done, then follow the JMRI release notes to upgrade JMRI to a current version. Once that is done, then see if you still have the issue. If so ask your question again.

I could not disagree more. Much better to get working what was once working (albeit on other hardware), than to try to upgrade from something that does not work, in the (guaranteed vain) hope of a magic fix happening along the way. It's just not good fault-finding procedure.

Only add an upgrade into the mix once 4.26 works again. Java 8 plus jmri 4.26 is a perfectly feasible combo, and there's no reason for a knee-jerk upgrade just because newer stuff exists.

Wouter?

Wouter,

He is not trying to get something that was working working again. He has upgraded to a completely new machine and installed from scratch. What I am suggesting is that he shouldn't try to duplicate his old setup on a new machine, but rather to use current software versions on a new setup. There is no reason that I am aware of that JMRI 4.26 shouldn't be able to run on Java 17.

Dick,

I read it differently. I quote: "It became necessary to RE-install". That implies an existing installation, with (who knows?) any of panel files, scripts, roster, profiles, connected hardware. Which is why I stand by what I wrote. If there was nothing on the old machine/installation that needs salvaging, you are, of course, totally correct.

Hi, I had something a bit similar with my Windows 11 laptop.
?
The JMRI Panel Pro 5.6 startup got stuck after I'd added an NCE Power Pro connection using a USB to serial adapter and then restarted (saved the preferences and Panel Pro tried to restart).
?
My solution to get JMRI to startup was to:
?
1) kill Java in the Windows Task Manager (may stop other Java applications running at the same time?).
2) Find the JMRI profile.xml and edit out all the references to the NCE connection (I used Notepad++ for the editing). Save the edited version back where it came from (best to make a copy first).
3) Startup JMRI Panel Pro.
?
I then swapped to a Raspberry Pi running Pi OS/JMRI and the same USB to serial adapter to temporarily carry on my task.
?
I didn't solve the Win11/JMRI connection problem but maybe that's where the startup sticks for some other types of JMRI to DCC command station connection?.
?
Regards
?
Nick

Thanks for the help. I downloaded and installed:
Azul Zulu IRE 17.55.15(17.0.14) 32 bit
JMRI 5.10+Rca461bd266
I restarted my computer and tried to start JMRI. Nothing Happened. Neither icon opened on the taskbar and no JMRI splash screen. Is there any way to correct this? Thanks.

Also, did you use the Java uninstall tool to completely remove all the prior Java versions? If they (or their remnants) are still present it could cause the symptoms you're now seeing.

As Phil noted you need 64bit on a 64bit machine but you said

?
The Windows 11 has no 32bit version of that OS.
Down load and install azul......64bit.
Or force Launchjmri.exe to use a 32bit version by adding /32bit to the command line.
