Locked Programing BLI Paragon 3 decoders
Bill When you put the loco on your programming track connected to JMRI are you clicking on new loco? If so make sure you choose either Diesel or Steam under Paragon 3 and not rolling thunder.? That is the only thing I can think to tell you.? I am sure others will have advice. 开云体育This issue has been discussed?Look on the websight for all the comments My opinion is jmri can only be used with the digitrax programming track by chance with paragon decoders. Sometimes it will identify the engine and most times it won’t. I am told that you need to boost the power used to read and write normal decoders to read and write sound decoders in general and paragon in particular. ?Sprog 3 and digitrax pm4 programmers were suggested.? Try the following Run the engine, if new its address is 3. See the engine run. Put engine on programming track, open decoder pro, select new engine, select find - if it doesn’t find the decoder then select it yourself Open the programmer to basic page Enter a 4 digit address and select it Write changes on page. ?See error message telling you the engine didn’t respond Place engine on track and run it using 4 digit address. ?If it runs your good The company broadway limited which uses these decoders claim their decoders are good and can be programmed using the handheld doing one cv variable at a time You may need to use a programmer with more power and an interface like jmri I haven’t solved the problem for myself yet Tony On Aug 21, 2018, at 7:47 PM, David dareese51 <dareese51@...> wrote:

开云体育I've had the same issues programming Broadway Limited locomotives with JMRI. Broadway Limited states that their decoders are for NMRA compliant systems, which JMRI is not.One option is the Broadway Limited? Address Changer, which works but is another component you have to buy. Fortunately my club has one. I've used my Digitrax DT500 hand held throttle to set locomotive addresses with no problem. My process is to reset the locomotive to factory default 03. Then re-program to the desired locomotive address. This still leaves the issue of programing CVs which is cumbersome using the Digitrax throttle. I've been unable to solve the issue of using JMRI to program and change CV settings. I get constant non read and time out error messages and no changes to CV settings. Regards, Robert On 8/21/18 6:40 PM, AD wrote:

The key part is that JMRI isn't a system in the context of NMRA standards
since it is only software. JMRI is only as compliant as the underlying command station. If the command station can't do something, JMRI isn't going to make it happen. Now there are a few cases where the normal system interface can't do things that JMRI can make the command station do. But it is still the limits of the command station that we are limited by. So saying JMRI isn't NMRA compliant shows somebody isn't thinking. NMRA isn't applicable to JMRI since NMRA has no standards for software, only hardware. -Ken Cameron, Member JMRI Dev Team www.jmri.org www.fingerlakeslivesteamers.org www.cnymod.com www.syracusemodelrr.org |
开云体育Bill, ? Programming Paragon decoders was discussed in detail a while back on another list.? ? There was a long, technical discussion revolving on why they are hard to program on a service mode programming track.? The ‘gist’ of the discussion was that the capacitors needed to be charged in order for the decoder to respond as expected on the programming track.? If the capacitors are not charged, the small programming ‘bursts’ first charge the capacitors; ?once the capacitors are charged the decoder will begin responding as expected.? The solution was to keep the track powered, then ‘toggle’ it to ‘program’ immediately before starting the JMRI read/write process.? (This takes some practice to get the timing correct.) ? I’ve applied this to Paragon and other decoder brands with mixed success.? For example, it works with many TCS WOW decoders (on TCS motherboards), while not working with others ? Alternatively, you may want to try Ops Mode programming.? I find it fast and reliable.? I have nearly divorced myself from the programming track.? At most, I use the programming track to get an address in the decoder.? Ops Mode programming is used for all speed; sound or lighting adjustments.? JMRI maintains a record of my settings thus I find no need to read-back any CV values.? ? I frequently ‘copy’ my current program then work on additional programming in a ‘new’ roster file. ??If I don’t like my changes it is very easy to go back to the last ‘good’ settings.? I also keep separate files for things like higher volumes during an open house vs. an op session; different CV settings for use on a different railroad, etc. ? YMMV ? Ross ? ? 开云体育I was working with this yesterday, for paragons (3&4) some
seem to read/write easier than others. At the club we have a
soundtrax booster with our DCS100 and JMRI at the programing
track. This particular BLI loco would not not read or write with
this setup (some will). I brought it home and it reads/writes fine
with the PR3 and JMRI I really do not think it is JMRI where the
problem is, as I could not do anything with it programing from a
DT402 directly on the club setup either. Even at home with the PR3
I sometimes had to read/write a page more than once to get it all
in as it would 308 error on one or more cv's on a page. As an aside with a problematic decoder I would recommend only
read/write one page at a time. Bill Deeter Delmarva Model RR Club Modeling the B&O Parkersburg Sub (Parkersburg to Chillicothe) DelmarvaModelRailroadClub.org You can watch things happen, you can make things happen, or you can wonder what the hell happened On 8/22/2018 11:18 AM, Classic Auto

开云体育Robert, ? Give Ops Mode programming a try. Ops Mode programming is a fast reliable tool most DCC users leave hidden away in their tool box. ? I’ve been using Ops Mode with JMRI; Digitrax DCS100; LocoBuffer-USB for several years.? I enjoy not being involved in the ‘read-back’ hassle. ? The hardest part is getting the decoder addressed.? So far I’ve only found 1 decoder I couldn’t get addresses with my DCS100.? I used a DB150 to program the address.? (Hint to Digitrax DB150 owners – you have a very powerful programmer in your tool box.)? Once the address is programmed all additional programming is completed using Ops Mode. ? Ross ? 开云体育Hi all.? I found a way to program my BLI Paragon3 decoders. I am using
Vista Windows connected to my DCS210 via loconet-usb connection and using JMRI
4.13.2.? I found if I select the Paragon 3 decoder from the the decoder
list, that I have been able to enter an address to the decoder. I then open the
programmer and enter the date on the first sheet and save to Roster. Then I go
to ops programing and open the loco I just added to the roster and am able to
continue to enter all other data I want to change. Thanks to all that responded
to my earlier request.? I knew the problem wasn’t with jmri since I have
used it to program 43 previous locomotives including Paragon 2 decoders.

Hi Guys- I had trouble programming BLI Paragon 3 decoders (I have some P 2 locos I haven't tried yet). I have a bad component on the NCE USB so I'm using a Sprog 3.
I set up a temp roster entry with an address of 3 for the new locos. I thought I could use it to change the loco's address to its 4 digit road number. I could not get this to work at all. I set the 4 digit address using BLI's own Address Changer. Worked like a charm and the "true" roster entry addressed the loco. BUT still could not program it. The loco did respond to the "Identify" button evidenced by its forward jumps. Looking back on my old saved forum messages, I went to the "Sound" programing tab and found the item "CV Write Sound Feedback" and set it to "Disable.". This is CV 245, bit 3. After then writing that page to the loco successfully I was then able to program the entire decoder without a problem. BTW, the Sprog 3 outputs 14.4 volts true DCC at 0.03 amps using a Rrampmeter in parallel with the tracks. The loco is a BLI 2-10-0 P3. As I think about it, if I had used the temp roster entry with an address of 3 and gone first thing to eliminate the "sound feedback", I could probably have changed the address effectively. FWIW... Hi Bill
Starting out of the box: Place Loco on programming track.
from the tech guide CV245 - Paragon2/3 steam and diesel - "D6 – 0= CV write sound feedback enabled
?1= CV write sound feedback disabled
(Some controllers need this disabled to read CV’s)"??

http://www.broadway-limited.com/support/manuals/P2techSteam[1.10].pdf
?
On the jmri decoder definition it talked about this bit 6 as being about turning off "write sound feedback"
?
The default paragon 3/2 steam, is 00010001, = 0x11 = decimal 17. add bit 6 = decimal 81?
the default paragon 3/2 diesel is 00000001, = 0x01 = decimal 1, add bit 6 = decimal 65?
But maybe read the manual, just in case I messed up. There is a lot of information.
?
using your favorite cv writer, dtxxx or what ever write 81/65 to cv 245
count to 10 and read back, after placing loco on programming track if you did this on the main. Ive found that direct works better than paged, but varies by Command Station for some odd reason, but you results may vary.
Like some other decoders (TCS dither adjustments, and others), it may not take until rebooted by removing power from track if you were on the main.
This workes for me on DCS50/51/240 - programming track and main, pr3 programmer programming track. As for why it worked at the club and not at home... make the set ups identical, so as I understand, no booster. I used no booster. Steve G. |
From reading this and other threads with the power output from Sprog 3’s I’m beginning to think there is a wide variety of power supplies sold with them. Mine came with a 12.2 volt .5 amp supply. Others have had 13 volt and 14 volt with various amperages. I put a 15 volt on mine and it works fine. It’s overpowered for a programming track, but it works. I’m going to have to try changing the “CV Write Sound Feedback” and see if that works. Thanks.

开云体育You will certainly have problems with JMRI and decoders (Paragon and QSI) that have Verbal Feedback enabled. The decoders go "deaf" while speaking and programming commands are ignored/confused during that time. --?
