I've been doing that for many years with no problems.

Storing your Profiles on?Dropbox (and sharing them) has more recently become possible and I have been using it for quite some time. We've ironed out most of the bugs in that.

You can't change your primary Settings location of JMRI. It is fixed on a per-operating-system basis.

I don't see how use of Dropbox could be causing Jay's problem.

I’ve upgraded JMRI hundreds of times over the last 12 – 15 years and have never lost my dataset.? While taking your own backup before an upgrade is a good idea, the upgrade process is designed to protect your data in place.
