Locked JMRI with NCE Pro Cab #procab #nce

I've been using JMRI with my NCE ProCab on and off for years.? Recently upgraded to a new win10 system and have been unable to configure USB to Serial interface.
As such I purchased USB Interface for NCE Cab Bus, to date it has not successfully connected as I'm receiving an error that USB device is not recognized (Set Address Failed).

Connecting same USB able to an older win10 laptop does not trigger the same error but JMRI does not try to connect with the USB Interface as it keeps trying to connect with the Serial Cable profile, even though I have it checked to disabled and have restarted the application numerous times.

With that said I did get it running again using the serial connection and the old laptop (laptop not preferred).? However, once again a number of engines are not detectable on the program track or take really long to read.? I'm using a Tonys PowerPAX booster which has a solid indicator light.

I know I mixed issues here but I'm always so frustrated with this.? Options/suggestions?

Thanks.

NCE USB interface is only for the Power Cab.

What USB to Serial device? Have you loaded the correct drivers for your USB to
Serial device?

I use the Tripp-Lite Keyspan USA-19HS with no problems, a similar device from
ESU works well also.

Don't get one of those el-cheapo units as many are counterfeit.

I too initially thought I needed an NCE USB User Interface when I recently switched and purchased a new NCE ProCab Wireless system replacing another DCC brand. I had to re-read the NCE references a couple times at the JMRI website:

What is confusing is that NCE named their systems too close to one another - i.e. "Power Pro", "Power Cab" and "ProCab". See NCE website:

I also intended to re-use my Keyspan USB to Serial connector, however, the serial interface at the NCE Command Station does not match up properly, due to some screw hardware. I then used my ESU USB to Serial connector and everything was recognized and it properly communicates between my computer and DCC.

Hi Bob,

It's still not quite straight in your head, I think. There is no such thing as a 'ProCab system'. That's because a ProCab on its own, even if wireless, does not have a command station and is therefore totally incapable of running trains. It's only a system once you add a command station - which can be any of the others, even a PowerCab (a PowerCab on its own *IS* a system - a PowerCab is a ProCab with a command station incorporated within the same hammerhead box. Another ProCab added to it will give you two throttles.

Wouter,

Yes, that a big difference I deleted my post.....I assumed Power Cab but he said Serial cable.....

He might be using the Power Cab to program with.

Bummer.? I found that out today on YouTube.? Tony's did not tell me this when i called them and explained my issues with the serial port.

I thought I had bought the cable with drivers from RR-Cikits some years back.? Problem is win10 won't let me install the specific drivers telling me that the current one is newer (installed by the OS).
In any case its working on the Laptop but the PC gives me the address error.

I ordered the 'Tripp-Lite Keyspan USA-19HS' from Amazon earlier this evening, figured I'll give it a shot on both the PC and Laptop. Maybe a better cable with 230 Kbps transfer will remedy some of my issues?
Still very frustrating when I get no loco detected, mostly BLI engines, even with the program track booster.

I'll report back once I get the new cable and reach out again for help.? I appreciate it.

Its a ProCab connected to an NCE Powerhouse.? I have JMRI connected via the serial port on the powerhouse.? As I noted my new PC does not like the serial cable, my laptop does.? However, laptop seems really slow reading CV's and some locos are just not detected, even with the Tony's PowerTrax booster.

My OLD PC ran pretty well with the serial cable but I've recently retired it.

I ordered 'Tripp Lite Keyspan High-Speed USB to Serial Adapter', based on another suggestion.? My existing serial cable is probably 10yrs old so interested to see if I have any improvement on either the new WIN10 pc or WIN10 Laptop.? I'll report out again when I get the cable and test it.?

The one from RRCirKits would almost certainly be the recommended FTDI one. Latest drivers from:

I always recommend the RRCirKits one or the ESU one. Both are trouble free with the Power Pro.

You'll most likely have to do a bit of butchery (or buy a straight-through M-F RS232 extension cable - an uncommon beast these days) to get a Keyspan cable working reliably with the Power Pro (unless they've changed the plug recently).

Get a PTB100 and I bet your issue of some locos not being detected goes away.?

The NCE Power Pro can't transfer reliably any faster than 9600 baud, so JMRI won't let you use any other speed.

The PTB-100 works better with the NCE Power Pro than the PowerPax one. Many of us have found that.

Thanks.? I also just realized that the cable I ordered won't fit onto the PowerHouse as I need the male end screws, the one I ordered was female ended.? I just canceled the order and reordered '

Again let me try a new cable with appropriate drivers and see if it connects with my PC.? Then I can continue troubleshooting with assistance from this group.

A gender changer is not very costly.

I just canceled the order and reordered ' DTECH 10 Feet USB 2.0 to RS232 DB9
Serial Port Adapter Cable with FTDI Chipset Supports Windows 10 8 7 and Mac
Linux' (

)

Again let me try a new cable with appropriate drivers and see if it connects

A Gender Changer will not work with the Keyspan because it actually has a female connector.

The problem is that the Keyspan has:
- Binding Posts. The Power Pro male plug has binding posts (as it should). If you remove the binding posts from the Power Pro, you create long-term reliability problems with the unit.
- The shroud may also foul the front panel (which is too thick). See:

Installed the new Serial cable with included driver and there is a huge improvement in ability to read from the program track and read much faster.

Still won't detect my Broadway SD9 but does detect other Broadway engines.? Someone suggested replacing Tony's Powerpax booster with other.? Before I do that I'll try re-installing the resistor on one leg of the program track.

Russ,

What voltage is going to the PowerPax? I have two at layouts that have 18VDC
supplies and they do very well with just about everything.
