Frequently Asked Questions/Topics/Official Announcements?
I never see those first.
Change topics to messages and at the top right click on date so it shows the newest messages first. -- Peter Ulvestad Linux Mint 22.1, JMRI 5.11.3plus, Java 21.0.5 JMRI Users Group Moderator ( /g/jmriusers ) JMRI Developers Group Moderator ( ) Tam Valley Group Moderator ( ) Sprog-DCC Group Moderator ( ) Edmonton Model Railroad Association ( ) |
Doing that lists the messages singly, not threaded. Personally, I don't find that a useful format whatsoever.

I agree with Andy - Move the stickies somewhere else, maybe leaving one sticky with a pointer to the rest. Some of the sticky content is already duplicated in the Wiki, why not put the rest there? Absolutely none of the other fora I follow, either on groups.io or elsewhere, whether MRR related or my other hobbies, are similarly cluttered.
?
Besides, considering some of the posts I've seen (not just here), I doubt many people look at the stickies anyway.

Sticky is all very well for people using the group's web interface. I don't, and I'm sure there are many like me who just let the messages arrive in email form, either individually or as digests. Might be worth a poll. Personally, I think a faq on the jmri site is a lot more useful, and the standard questions could than be handled with a reply in the form of a single link. No, sticky isn't "all very well for people using the group's web interface." That's exactly the problem - When you use the Web interface, the first page is stickies you have to scroll through to get to any actual message threads. ?
And I follow far too many fora for my various hobbies to even consider email delivery. Been there, done that, with the filters and folders and filing - What a mess! Maybe that worked back in the dial-up days if you followed a small number of fora, but for me at least it's not a viable solution.

However, I do agree with your FAQ suggestion. I suggested putting them in the forum's Wiki, bit the JMRI Web site might also work (Although, apparently, not many folks bother to read the release notes there. I'm not sure the FAQ's would do any better.)

Fair points. What works for one doesn't necessarily work for others. My hope would be that, eventually, many responses to standard questions could be replaced with just a link to the applicable faq. One carefully worded and thought through standard response reached via such a link would be a lot better than the current free-for-all, where users, with the best intentions, can give half-correct or incomplete or actually wrong information. I know I've done all three, so I'm not starting a blame game! Wouter On Sun, 9 Mar 2025, 15:25 Breezlys via , <livinthelife=[email protected]> wrote:

Use the RSS feed, /g/jmriusers/rss, and a plugin for my web browser to list messages new to me then click through the link to those I consider of interest.
