FileRepMalware message when I try to execute the latest downloads.
#malware
开云体育Hi All ? Why do I get this ” FileRepMalware” message when I try to “execute” (click on the .exe file) after downloading the latest two versions of JMRI when I try to upgrade Decoder Pro, using my NCE Power Pro system and Windows 7. ? I am presently using 4.15.6 so I thought I get with the latest. ? I haven’t seen any messages regarding my issue on this list over the last few months, so why am I the only one having issues. ? Googling “FileRepMalware” says my AVG has found Malware and I should not use the file. I have used Decoder Pro for over 15 years. I am a computer novice and I don’t need to upgrade to Windows 10 just at this particular time. Version 4.15.6 programs my decoders just fine. ? Can someone help me. ? Regards Marcus Layout Video Web Site ?

Reading the discussion, it seems I’ll just have to keep using 4.15.6.that works for me, programming my existing locos – no new installations happening here. ? Surely you can override this warning with most AV products?
I would have thought you can obtain an MD5 checksum of a known good copy of the installer, check your download against it, and if all is well, just direct your AV to quit squawking about it. Or am I missing something here? And how would a W10 upgrade help anyway? I've seen plenty of cases where AV gets it wrong, and most of them let you do something about it. Also, have we ruled out a real problem with the installer e.g. perhaps a mirror has been compromised? Also not impossible. |

开云体育Hi Charles ? I am a model railroader with a Laptop connected to my layout to make for easier programming of decoders. What is an “MD5” an ?“AV” a “checksum” a “mirror being compromised” etc. My mirror was compromised this morning when I had a shave. I’m not having a go at your solutions but you have to keep it simple because I am. Answering technical questions should not be written in “short hand”, as the original poster may not understand them and many are not computer geeks. ? I guess operating a layout is getting harder as we strive for all the enhancements that DCC and JMRI offer. ? Dave Heap phoned me this morning on how to fix the issue. It is too hard for this 69 year old to cope with at the moment. ? Regards Marcus Layout Video Web Site ?

开云体育Hi Marcus, Sorry, I have obviously assumed far too much knowledge of things I've been immersed in for 40 years (though I'm 60 myself and semi-retired, this is my trade more or less). It is a fact that AV products are far from infallible, they use rules to check whether a thing is evil or not. Sometimes these rules are too rigid, or out of date, or the software just isn't that clever, and they get it wrong--'false positive' is a term you might hear when this happens. An MD5 checksum is a calculation that is performed using e.g. an installer .exe file as the input. More here: and here: I see that the managers of jmri.org have used sha256 checksums
instead, which are just a different way of doing exactly the same
thing. The above tools will calculate either. What it does is enable you to compare very quickly a known good
download from a suspect one. You can view the sha256 value posted
for the download. Compute the value for your download and
compare--if they're the same (it produces a single number, which
is the checksum), then you have a good one. If not, it might have
been tampered with. Most files on the internet are hosted on what are called mirrors,
which are simply a warehouse of files hosted by some business who
make money doing this, in exchange for offloading the task of
managing it from those who have better things to do. Like all
other internet resources, they can be hacked and this happens from
time to time for various reasons, but is not all that common. Very
often, this is noticed very quickly by others, and fixed. However
infected files can escape and be downloaded in the meantime. So, unless a particular mirror has been compromised, you are
highly likely to have a valid download which your AV simply does
not like for reasons best known to itself, You have a way of
checking this using checksums, and if your AV permits it, create
an exception for this file and proceed with your installation. I
have always taken the view that I run the computer, not the other
way around, and I am very firm with them at all times :-) At the end of the day though, if you're not? confident wrangling
this arcane stuff, phone a friend is also an excellent solution
and I'm glad you have resolved it. Best regards, Charles On 22/9/19 10:56 am, Marcus Ammann

First let me make a public apology to everyone for making free with bad advice!
Neither of the utilities I posted support sha256 checksums. Here are two that will: There is also cerutil which may or may not be built in to your version of Windows. Instructions here: Second, if anyone is not confident of how to make an exception for a file flagged as bad by AV, be very careful trying to do so. You can inadvertently open a security hole or worst-case brick your system by clicking around madly with this stuff. Best bet is to ask someone who uses the same AV, and has done it.u Third, it might be a good idea for the archive maintainers to contact the AV vendor in question (AVG), and let them know that the archive is being wrongly flagged by their product. Not sure what happens then--some AV vendors are good about this, some not so much. I have no knowledge of AVG, being an Avast user myself when I work with windows, which is not often these days if I can help it. But as I said to Marcus in a PM, every AV does this differently so I don't know the specific steps to make an exception for AVG. And next time I'll be more careful before launching the spread of torps... 'Ready Fire Aim'! |

Hi Marc, Thanks for the info, however I'm still having problems. When I try to install 401704(and 4.17.3 for that matter) I get the following Windows notice: Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item". This is then followed by Avast putting the file in the Security chest. I have tried the Avast add exception? as you recommended without success. I have tried loading? with Windows firewall and virus protection turned off; still the same result. I have been able to upgrade to? 4.17.2. Many thanks for your help, Mike.

You should pick up the phone and call Avast. this will give you a good idea of how great they are at supporting you or not.? The problem is AVAST and nothing else.? In fact it is not a problem, just the Anti-Virus doing it's intended job, protecting your data. If you paid for the software they should support you and show you how to add the NEW JMRI Version? to the exclusion file or add it to the Whitelist. Other option, dedicate one computer to JMRI and keep it off the NET. KIll the anti-virus. You will not be bothered with false positives any more. Marc |

开云体育Hi Marc, Charles, Dave H, Andrew & Michael ? Marc, thanks for going to the trouble to test the AVG then itemise the steps to get the latest download into my Windows 7 Laptop. I still needed to “phone a friend” as I could not “find” the appropriate files/folders etc or to even open up AVG. I told you I am computer illiterate. Using Marc’s suggestions and my friends help, my procedure was: ? Left Click on AVG Icon from the Drop Down Box from the Toolbar R/H side. Select Menu Select the Quarantine Tab 3 Threats listed. Check Ticked the 4.17.4 File that also showed “FileRepMalware” message. A “Delete” Box was highlighted in Orange. Clicked on the Down Arrow to provide Options. Selected “Restore and Add Exception” Waited a minute and there was message to say something close to “Okay – Completed” Selected my Downloads. Clicked on the JMRI 4.17.4 file and the my JMRI was upgraded. ? I didn’t do anything with the? 2 other Quarantined file - JMRI works. I’ll have to remember this above process to keep my JMRI up to date – one version less than the latest beta version as Marc suggests. ? Michael, maybe your AVG/Avast is similar to mine and following my Steps above, might give you JMRI in the computers you’re having trouble with. ? ? Once again Marc thanks for your help. ? Marcus and All, I had already tried the security chest method, it did not work for me! How ever I was successful by sending the download to the documents folder and clicking it there; it worked! I still have? 1 Win 10 laptop and 2 Win 7 pcs to try my method on. I will report back. Although maybe Avast's embargo has been lifted? Thanks to everyone for your help,? Mike.
