Locked Operations: won't swap my loaded coal hopper with empty one. #operationspro

 

I have a car float and an industry that has a spur for coal (1 car length).? The float is currently full with 8 cars (5 of which were loaded there from a previous trick of this train and are not eligible to move).? When I go to build the train it pulls two of the remaining cars on the float sends them to an industry and brings two cars back.? BUT the last available car on the float is a loaded coal hopper 73476 and my industry has an empty coal hopper 5371.? I'm set to aggressive and it won't swap these two cars due to a track length issue.

I need to get that final car 73476 off the float and replaced with another so the float can 'sail' to off layout and bring back a fresh 8 cars.

What am I doing wrong?

Hi Mike,

You're doing nothing wrong, the program can only move a car to an empty space, or one that's going to be vacated.? One trick is to tell the program that a track with a car will always get pulled.? Is this the case with the coal track, that when a new coal car arrives, there will be room for the empty car on the float?? If so, tell the program to ignore the occupancy at Hooker Furniture coal track by setting planned pickups to 100%.

You could also use the alternate track feature, is there space for one car near the car float?? If so, make that an alternate track for the float.? Now the program will use the alternate to pull the empty coal car, and then move the loaded coal car from the float freeing up space, and once the space is freed up, will cancel the alternate track move, and send the empty coal car directly to the float.

Either solution should work for you, there may be others,

OK Dan,
First I tried to set an alternative track for the car float but it would not do it as the car float track is a C/I track I use to originate trains.

I then set the Hooker coal track? to 100% planned pick up.? When I did this it now pulled 73476 from the car float with a destination of Hooker coal track but it did not pick up 5371 from Hooker as it said there was no room on the float.? Thus it is trying to put two cars on the Hooker track that has space for one.

Did the program put a different car on the float?

Can you give the coal track an alternate, that should also work.

Yes, it picked up a box car instead of? the coal hopper.

I tried the alternate track scenario and it worked.? I had a long lead to the finished goods track at Hooker Furniture and I made that an Off Spot alternative for all three tracks at Hooker.? Then when I built the train it did pick up the coal empty and take it to the car float and it picked up the box car and put it on the off spot so it would hopefully go to the car float on the next train.

What if you list Hooker Furniture twice on your route?? First with pickups only and second with setouts only.? Also, if this is an everyday occurrence reserve space (separate track definition one car length + 4') on your float C/I track that only accepts coal hoppers.? That would prevent the return train from using that space for another car.
