Locked Decoder Pro not seeing Power Cab #nce #powercab

 

Total newbie, am having lots of trouble getting JMRI to work with my NCE PowerCab/USB Interface. ?I am hoping that if I give you all my specs, someone will be able, from experience to pinpoint the problem. ?Basically, the driver doesn't seem to be working: When I go into DecoderPro connection preferences, I see only "unspecified" and a Bluetooth Driver. ?No Silab USB. ?Not sure if the nobleman is hardware or software related, so here's my list of bits and pieces.

MacBook Pro running OSX.14.16
PowerCab running v1.65
NCE USB Interface v7.x.x (currently with all jumpers off, but have tried all on as well)
? SilabsUSBDriver.kext installed
??SilabsUSBDriver64.kext installed
Ativa USB2.0 A/B cable and a USB B/C adapter at computer
DecoderPro JMRI v4.16+R6f9aced

When I first fired it all up, it seemed that I could communicate with a loco on the track, but not well. ?There were issues with the loco # reverting to some five digit #, and also the program did not read the decoder mfr. correctly. ?I have since fiddled with the connection settings and now the program will not connect at all. ?As I mentioned before, the USB driver is not showing up at all, but neither is much else at this point.

Hoping its a simple routine to run down the likely problem(s). ?Many thanks in advance for your help!
PS: I tried reading old threads related to this topic, but many seem to wander into the weeds a little too deep for me to follow; I am not a programmer. ?If there is a simple fix already documented here, please do point me to it. ?Thanks!

Did now find a cable and/or driver that seems to be working, though still having troubles (red light coming on, etc). ?Can someone Mac¡¯y please confirm the jumper positions? I¡¯ve gotten two different answers from NCE. ?With that info in hand Inwill try rostering a different loco and report what happens. ?Thank you!
 

Have tried jumpers 2-4 both ways (all on-all off), and when I go to add a locomotive and read from, i get the error 301-no locomotive detected.

Hi Andrew,

It seems you passed the first hurdle - communication between command station and computer is now apparently there. The second hurdle may be a very small one: if you are trying to read a decoder while NOT in program track mode, then it is bound to fail. You can only read on the program track. And then only reliably if only one loco/decoder is there at any one time. I hope that's the simple solution you need. If not, we into the more murky problems of wiring, track cleaning, wheel cleaning at all that sort of thing.

You confirm that, without JMRI, you are capable of reading and writing to the decoder sitting on program track ?? If your NCE Powercab fails READ/WRITE on it's own, JMRI will fail also.
301 error is an indication that computer(JMRI) and Powercab are talking but the decoder is not responding or not found on program track.?

Yes, I can acquire, read and write with PowerCab on the Programming track. ?Not convinced yet that JMRI and PowerCab are talking.

This indicates you've got obsolete SiLabs drivers hanging around, probably in "/System/Library/Extensions/".

Delete all existing SiLabs drivers from?both?"/System/Library/Extensions/" and?"/Library/Extensions/". Then start again and follow the instructions below.

Installing NCE USB on Mac
===================
- Plug the USB side of the NCE USB into your Mac (you do not need to plug it into the PCP to do the next few steps.

- Go to System Report from Apple Menu->About This Mac->More Info.

- Look in the USB section and see if a Silicon Labs device is present. If not you have a USB hardware fault; cable, connector, port or device. That will need resolving before you go any further.

- Download and install SiLabs CP210x drivers from <>.

- Unplug the NCE USB.

- Open a Terminal Window (from /Applications/Utilities), copy and paste the following command in EXACTLY (including spaces and punctuation) then press Enter.

- This command should show about 10 lines of output and then sit looping, with a counter incrementing every second.

- Plug your device back in and wait a few seconds. Two new items with names like cu.SLAB_USBtoUART and tty.SLAB_USBtoUART should appear in the list. They should disappear if you unplug your device. If this does not happen, you do not have the correct drivers installed for your device and you will need to solve that before proceeding further.

(With later macOS versions, you'll probably need to go to System Preferences->Security & Privacy->General at this stage and allow the new Silabs driver to load the first time.)

- Once you have found your device, write down the name you see.You want the cu.xxx version not the tty.xxx version.

- If you have got this far you know your device is be being seen by the Mac, that it has a matching driver installed and the name of the connection port "cu.xxx" you need to select in JMRI.

General Troubleshooting
==================

If the system does not work after this:
- If your SB5/Power Cab is V1.65 rather than V1.65B, you may have been affected by a firmware issue (triggered by a System Reset).
- Your NCE USB may be set to a bad cab address (V7 only).
- There is a potential hardware issue with the NCE USB/Power Cab combination.
In either case, go through the following :
- Quit JMRI.
- Ensure neither LED on the NCE USB is stuck ON. If so, power cycle the USB by unplugging it from the cab bus cable.
- Ensure you have no other throttles connected.
- Restart JMRI and immediately go to Configure USB Interface under the NCE menu.
- Set the Cab ID to 3.
- Attempt a JMRI operation (use a throttle, Identify a decoder).
- The status line should stay green and it should work?
-If this does not work, do not fiddle with any other settings but instead:
-- Observe whether the Cab Bus LED on the NCE USB is stuck on and report back.
-- Use Help->System Console...->Copy to clipboard and paste into a post for us to see.

The installer should put a new one in "Library/Extensions". It doesn't always clear out the old ones.

No harm in removing everything SiLabs and doing a clean reinstall of the latest correct (for your OS version) drivers from <>..

Not an opinion, just the facts. There's no way your current configuration (all jumpers off and 19,200 baud) will ever work. There's a baud rate mismatch between the USB part (set by JMRI) and the onboard microprocessor (set by the jumpers).

There are only two valid setting combinations for a Power Cab:
1) All jumpers OFF and 9600 baud in JMRI.
2) All jumpers ON and 19200 baud in JMRI. (Jumper 1 is ignored so it's setting doesn't matter).

Setting (1) is the base level setting that will work with any combination of NCE USB (V6 or V7) and any Power Cab version.

Setting (2) will only work with NCE USB V7. and and Power Cab V1.65 or greater (V1.65B preferred). Enables some extra features but can be a bit more fiddly to set up.

Don't attempt setting (2) until you get setting (1) working reliably (and then only if you have the right firmware versions).

When trying, it takes four tries:
All off, 9600
All off, 19200
All on, 9600
All on, 19200

That covers the many combinations of versions, firmware, prior options, and
past history. If the console never shows the firmware code 6.3.x or 7.3.x,
you've covered the jumper/baud rate combinations. Still leaves cables and
connections.

Also if during this either of the status lights in the USB stick on solidly,
that's another clue of what is going on.

It never got the right response. It did get garbled data, that usually means
an issue with baud rate wrong.

As long as the console is showing the AA messages errors, we are not talking

Second and third above will indicate a faulty jumper or "stuck" jumper input (device damage). Worth trying all four.

That covers the many combinations of versions, firmware, prior options, and
past history. If the console never shows the firmware code 6.3.x or 7.3.x,
you've covered the jumper/baud rate combinations. Still leaves cables and
connections.
Once you get a response, the "x" in the response indicates the jumper combination the microprocessor has read. If it doesn't agree with the physical jumpers, see above.

Also if during this either of the status lights in the USB stick on solidly,
that's another clue of what is going on.
Definitely.
- The Cab Bus side LED stuck on is particularly informative (and can only be cleared by unplugging the cab bus cable briefly to reset it.
- The USB side LED will stay on solidly if there's a communications fault (e.g. baud rate mismatch) but will flicker off between JMRI retries.

FYI, I've tried two different cables on the PowerCab Side of the USB board, and two different Serial ports on the Mac. ?No diff. ?Also have tried having the locomotive which I'm trying to read pre-selected with the PowerCab. Again, no difference in results. ?I am eager to hear the next steps. With Thanks!!

That's an important clue and invalidates some of your conclusions.

This indicates that the NCE USB cannot communicate with the Power Cab. I'm sure that if you were to try this again carefully while watching the log and the LEDs, you would find that this appears and the cab Bus Light comes on and sticks on when you try to read the decoder.
