Locked Upgrading my JMRI system

开云体育

My "Thinkpad" laptop runs Windows 10 but when I was last operating a NCE Power cab for a program track was ages ago. I checked and found JMRI version 4.4 on the laptop!?
I'm sure I'll have to nurse it forward in steps to protect the data from two brass rod engines.? I need some wise counsel on the best method to bring it up to date.?

What would be the best steps to take?

If all you're worried about saving data for is two engines, you might well be better off not trying to save that data at all. ? Just install the latest production JMRI and then create new entries and read the CVs for the two engines you have. ? ?It's not much work to read all of the CVs, and that is likely to be a simpler process than trying to move forward in stages. ??

Although I doubt that you'd need to stage upgrades for decoder roster data (that sort of staged upgrade is more typical for panels instead). ? ?If you install the latest JMRI, you might have the roster already there. ? If not, then as I noted before, creating?two new entries isn't hard at all.

David,
Thanks for your thoughts. I can only hope it's that easy. The steam engines are identified by their cab #s so I suppose I could start them, but once you're in your 70's you need to triple check everything in advance.?
Bill?

It is not the brass engine as much as the decoder that is in it that is of any concern in this.? If the Roster entries were done (I presume) under JMRI 4.4? (2016) and you have not replaced/updated the decoders in question, no great changes have occured with most decoders like the Soundtraxx Tsunami2 or Econami.

ESU decoders on the other hand I suspect it is different as much has changed since JMRI 4.4.

So simply re-reading the decoders is probably best bet.

What make decoders are they ?

Marc,
I have Soundtraxx, of different eras, in those engines.
From your observations, you also seem to be endorsing " just take the leap forward".?
(Before we sold our home I had to remove a basement layout built but never completed, with the? NCE Power Pro 5 amp system unused. Now the townhome only has room for a small wall-mount diorama and the Power Cab is probably sufficient. Time is always such a vilian. We all accumulate far too many cars, engines, rail, and kits for what we can actually finish....)
