Locked Still Getting 306 Error

开云体育

After weeks of trying just about everything that has been suggested I am running out of things to try.? Very frustrating as I really want to program my locos with Decoder Pro.?

?

This is what I see when I open decoder pro:

?

?

Whenever I attempt to read CVs or program, this is the message I get:

?

?

The USB and STAT lights are flashing on the PR3 as they should.?

?

?

?

This is what the com preferences look like:?

?

I have downloaded the latest version of Java, JMRI, replaced the USB interface cord, bought a new power source for the PR3 which is 14 volts, replaced the LocoNet network cord, and set connection preferences for the PR3.? I am running out of things to do and I am still at the front door looking to get in.

?

Does anyone have any suggestions before I give up?

Dave in WI,
Something weird on the old laptop apparently.? Loaded up on a newer laptop and all seems OK.? Now the trick is to load it up on the Dispatchers computer...
Thanks Dave and all.? Problem solved for now.

Jim,??

Attachments are not allowed so we are not seeing what I assume are your screen captures.

I read thru the previous thread and what was suggested. ? Are we dealing with Windows or MAC? this time.

306? is a " not talking to Command Station ".? This could be the PR3 not talking to your DCS51 Zephyr Command Station while the PR3 is in
the Interface mode or it could be the PR3 is in Standalone Programmer mode but the setup is wrong.? This needs to be determined,

Check device Manager for the USB Serial Device. Connect / disconnect? the PR3 a few times while looking at DevMGR? to confirm which COM it has been
assigned . Is the Device Driver loaded? for it (USBSER.SYS) .

?

All my work recently has been on a Windows computer.? I have the PR3 set to the Standalone Programmer mode.? When I go to Device Manager I can see the VC0M Port and watch it disappear when I unplug the unit and reappear when I plug it back in as you suggested.? When I right click on the VC0M port it says “the drivers for this device are not installed (Code 20).”? It also says “there are no compatible drivers for this device”.? When I click “update driver” and search online for the software it says “Windows could not find software for your device” and to check with the manufacturer.? I have already downloaded the latest version of Soundloader software on the Digitrax site which appears to be the place for PR3 drivers.? Through all of this trial and error the only two roadblocks I can see now would be this lack of device driver for the PR3 or the PR3 is malfunctioning.

?

Not sure what to do next?

You need to go to the Digitrax web site and download the driver.? Win10 is the only Windows based operating system that contains the proper driver and
it has to WIn10 that has all the fix packs.? Anything before Wn10 needs the driver from Digitrax

Soundloader does contain drivers for the PR3/PR4 but does not install them, you must do it. Point the driver update at the Soundloader folder \win_xxp_vista32_64

Or return to Digirax web site and download the appropriate driver.

You didn't tell us which version of Window you are using. However, if you go to this page
<>
You will see (under Product Support in the right-hand column) links to:
- Documents detailing PR3 installation for every version of Windows between XP and 10.
- Links to PR3 drivers for various Windows version.

Until you get the PR3 creating a valid COM port in Device Manager when you plug it in, you don't have a JMRI problem but a PR3 drivers problem. Until that is resolved, don't even bother starting JMRI, it's a futile waste of time.

P.S. You can also find what you need at the link Marc just posted:

By the way, the PR3 must always be inserted into the same USB port. Otherwise a? NEW com port is assigned to it.

The PR3 is not serialized.

The PR4 IS serialized so it will always retain the same COM port assigned to it.

This has been a cause for confusion since the PR3 was released.? There is a trick to working around this that I use if interested,

Marc

Jim,

What is the comm port number?

Inobu

If you read his first tread on this issue, it is Win10.. Com port was COM1 then changed to COM3.?

If it says VCOM, it does not have a COM port # assigned to it at all.? So COM1 and COM3 were not the PR3 at all.

This "VCOM" was not mentioned in the previous thread.

Just install the driver as I indicated and problem will be resolved.

Marc

Marc,

You cannot assume anything therefore one must methodically step through the process.
Just Installing the drivers will not resolve the issue it there is a conflict in regedit as the possibility of double assignments will have you running
in circles.

OK, at least now I feel as though we are getting to the problem, that the PR3 is not getting a consistent assignment for a com port.? I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with a 64-bit operating system.? I am on a plane to Chicago this morning and probably won’t get to try these fixes until Wednesday when I return but at least I have hope I can make the system work!

JIm,

Open device manager:? Right Click on Windows task bar and select Device Manager from the list.

In Device Manager:? Select View then "Device by Container". If it reveals the PR3 but no Comm Port number.

Right click over the PR3 device and select properties..

Click the VCP (Virtual Comm Port)

Close it and Windows will assign the comm port and it will be displayed. It should change it to comm port 5 or higher

The PR3 can be associated to USB Serial Converter but not its own Comm Port. The VCP field placed it in cue for a comm port.

If that does not work, then try using both of your cable at the same time. You want to force windows to make a new assignment on the comm port.
Sometimes the drivers can be the same and windows cannot tell the devices apart. It keeps referencing the wrong device to the wrong driver.?
This prevents the Program from recognizing the messages from the comm port.. ?

Inobu, I clicked on view and there is no device by container but there is device by connection so opened that.? The PR3 is not listed anywhere.? It does show a generic USB hub with several USB input devices.? It still shows the VC0M port with a yellow exclamation point.

Jim,

Device by container is in Windows 10. 8 does not have that option. At least you are see a conflict which is good.
Its hard to troubleshoot over the internet so one can only give you a basic so you can isolate the problem yourself.
If not it just shot gunning.

These types of conflict arises when the drivers are similar and windows gets confused. For example RIng Engineering?
has a product called RailPro. If you run it with ESU Lok Programmer Windows will confuse the drivers and assign the?
comm ports over each other rendering them inoperable. This is what Marc was pointing out. You must label the comm ports
and never connect them to the wrong usb port.

It appears you have this type of conflict. Careful not to shift from Windows 10 and 8 as the troubleshooting options can vary.

Sometimes its easier to restore Windows and install everything one by one and label them. It may seem time consumer but overall
it quicker.

Also, I always install Soundloader first making sure it works. Then just set that comm port in JMRI and it works every time.

You have a conflict which is a common occurrence.

Inobu

? ?

Just click on the VCOM and update driver.. Point windows to the folder that has Soundloader in it and the folder
\win_xxp_vista32_64?? this will install the required driver and assign the com port.

This is a common ocurence when the PR3 is inserted into a different USB port,? On a current version of Win10 (with fixpaks)? this is not an issue as he has the proper driver and ini files for the device. Older versions of Windows did not.?

If the driver is not installed, Soundloader will not work. This was all? noted in your previous thread.

Marc

Jim,

Did you try running the PR3 install twice? I've seen where the two parts,
one is the true USB, the other is the COMx part of it, both need to load to
get something working.

Ken, That applies to the RRCirKits Locobuffer-USB? and it's FTDI driver. It requires two passes to get driver installed.

The PR3 is seen as a? VCOM hardware device in Com & LTP? when inserted and no driver available.
Once the driver is loaded it changes to communication port device with the Com port # assigned to it.

Marc

One more item.

Now that it is clearly stated we are dealing with Win8 in 64 bit? you will need to apply the firmware update to your PR3 for 64 bit operating system.
once you get the driver installed and running.

In the earlier thread it was not Win8 that was reported :

" So, I downloaded the program on my pc running Windows 10 and was able to choose COM 1 and later changed to COM 3, but again, i got the 306 error messages.?? "
