Locked Steve Todd's image - Buster Update?
Suggestion for Steve Todd -
It would probably be helpful to many users if you were to post a new image with the most recent changes to Raspian Buster applied. Yesterday I was working with a friend that was using a 4Gb, Raspberry Pi specifically because he has two monitors. In the June 20 version of Buster, this board can have boot failures and other problems when connected to two monitors. (Not always, some monitors work better.) We disconnected one of the monitors, connected to the internet and did an update/upgrade. This solved the boot/monitor problems, and as a bonus, significantly sped up the Rpi. Given the number of relatively non-technical users of your image, it's probably a good idea to update the image with the most recent updates applied to Buster.? Even those that aren't experiencing problems would appreciate the speed increase. Thanks for putting the image together.? It's making JMRI much easier to install for many model railroaders. gs |
I'm confused. I thought Buster was only for the Pi 4, but now find online that maybe it can be used on my 3B+ if I put a big enough memory chip on it. What models of RPI, with what memory chips would this be good for? I'd like to get to JMRI 4.17.3 on my RPi 3B+. to match what I have on my Dell Windows 8.1 PC. Don Weigt Connecticut, USA |

On a RPI 3B+ all you need is a 8 gb SC card and you will use about half of its space. If you want a bit more room in case you add some other stuff, then go up to 16gb. I use 8 GB and jmri sails along. Oh, and by the way - - -back it up! ?back it up! ?back it up!? Perhaps a couple?of SD cards?? Cards do go bad - it has happened. I use win32 disk imager to do it with.? Super simple. Bob S On Sat, Sep 7, 2019 at 2:26 PM Don Weigt <dweigt47@...> wrote:

Don - Buster runs on the 3 and the 4, but the 4 must have Buster.
Roger - You are correct.? Buster can be updated in the terminal window via the usual apt-get update/upgrade commands.? It's early times for Buster and the Pi-4, and there are lots of little fixes coming at a quick pace. Because I have a feeling that the majority of railroaders using Steve's image skew towards the non-technical end of the scale, I suggested that he update the Buster version in the image to avoid strange support problems.? ? For the non-technically inclined, just bringing up a terminal window is a big step, and watching hundreds of lines that will scroll by during the upgrade/update process is pretty scary. gs |
