Locked Layout Editor crossover question
My railroad has several crossovers, in yards so locos can uncouple from their trains, and escape by way of an adjacent track, and one along a double track mainline. Physically, they are two switches (turnouts). On most of my railroad, the switch's rails are powered from the single route block at one end, and the exiting straight and diverging routes are wired as two other blocks. Two switches connected to form a crossover and wired that way results in four blocks meeting at the crossover.
Layout Editor's crossover symbol doesn't seem to be usable that way. Am I missing something? Especially, I need the crossover route to be in two separate blocks, because as wired for DC track power, the main line crossover is a reversing connection. It's also necessary for block detection for signalling. I've tried placing two switches so their diverging routes touch, forming a crossover, but the editor won't allow it, the junction displays as red, not green. To remedy, I've had to insert a length of track between them. The minimum length needed seems to be about 30 grid units. Is there a better way? |

The required track segment between two turnouts can have a length as little as zero. You do need to assign a block from one of the turnouts to satisfy block routing calculations. On a friend's layout the physical cross-overs are two turnouts but in JMRI they are the cross-over icons. The cross-over icon supports up to four blocks. For layouts that I have been involved with, the two blocks for each straight route have the same block. This provides two OS sections for signaling.
