Locked Decoder will only program one locomotive, then "freezes"

Hi:

at the end of a long process I've got DecoderPro running on a Raspberry Pi3B in a "PiDesktop" talking to an NCE PowerCab via USB.??? I'm using DecoderPro 4.10 + R418243e.??? The OS is Raspian (I think Jesse).

I am able to start DP and since I'm adding all my roster manually, I click NEW LOCO and then "READ TYPE FROM DECODER and then open the programmer (service mode) and read the loco by doing a "READ FULL SHEET" on the CV Tab. After checking for bad CVs and re-reading, I save the roster entry. Then I close the programmer by clicking the close window button on the upper right.??? At this point when I click NEW LOCO button the button stays highlighted but nothing happens and DecoderPro doesn't respond to anything.??? I've been using the Linux task manager to kill the Java process and restarting DP.

I can do an "identify" without causing the freeze.

1) am I missing a step to get DP ready to read a new loco?
2) Is there a log file I should be looking at?
