JMRI and Train-o-Matic
#definitions
Hello all, I am new here and to DCC.
Due to cost of decoders, I have stated with Train-o-Matic, 8pin (Pleae see Photo) the decoder is a (Lokommander II Mini W8P) I have done a reset CV8=8 and this is my problem.
When I go into JMRI, the programe tells me it's ( Mini 2), I have contacted Train-o-Matic, and they too it will work.
I need some help to point me in the right way and so that I understand then maybe go for a better make later. |
开云体育I think everything is correctYou have a Mini 2 (with an 8 pin plug) and JMRI identifies it as a Mini 2 (and doesn’t care what kind of plug it has)
Looks like you’re all good

开云体育I think all is correct and fine.??
And the CV's for all of the "version 2" Train-o-matic decoders of any size are pretty much the same.??
As decoders go, they're actually pretty good - better than many at any price, and definitely hold their own at their UK selling price point.? The maker is responsive to bug reports and change requests.? ??
I've beta-tested a few of their decoders. I had some free evaluation decoders, but no payment for the testing.? ?I fitted them into locos which would normally be given Zimo or ESU decoders, and have left them in those locos after the testing was
completed as I don't think I'd gain significant benefits with a change.??

You mention "lead loco". Have only ONE loco with only ONE active decoder on the programming track at any one time. Reads will fail, writes may fail but may affect every loco on the programming track. Wouter On Mon, 13 Jan 2025, 18:20 Calvados via , <hay.eddies61=[email protected]> wrote:

开云体育Is there a decoder at each end, or just the one? What is the SPECIFIC problem you are having??

开云体育What DCC system do you have connected to JMRI?And are you using a JMRI throttle to try and control the loco/decoder?
Is the track power definitely ON when you try?
What exactly do you mean by “pick the Lokcommander Mini”? What EXACTLY are you doing??
Sorry for all the questions, but your description is vague

I have a Digitrax DCS 52
When I take the Lokommander Mini II, within JMRI, the decoder do not work nor do it work when using the throttle within JMRI, but when I reset CV8=8 it works on main track
Lokommander Mini, is what JMRI, see's (as per photo above) my packet shows I have a Lokommander II Mini W8P. |
In order to make sure that the decoder is reacting correctly put up sth like a test board with some resistors, LEDs and a motor. connect it to your programming track and you can check your wiring (which is sometimes difficult in a loco) and the decoder Peter |
Thank you Peter,
That is the decoder, so moveing from that my HST has only the one motor, when I connect with JMRI, it tells me it's the Mini, which I use to program, when I do the settings I save then open Throttle in JMRI, it don't work, I then move it from programming to main track to test and it don't work, back on programming track and I do a reset from my digitrax dsc52 using CV8=8 and it works, I have done this so many times now, and being new to DCC, I need help. |

That might be your problem. ?
Due to the way Digitrax handles programming their own decoders, using the JMRI throttle while on the programming track could cause issues.
?
I would suggest doing your programming setup on the programming track, then testing on the main line.
?
Do NOT use the JMRI throttle while the loco is on the programming track!

开云体育I've done some testing, and I think there may be several issues getting tangled.? ?
There's a small bug to fix, but not a fundamental issue.?
a)? the reset menu for the Train-o-matic decoder in JMRI doesn't work.? I know why, and I'll get a bug fix lodged for it when I've inspected all the files.? ?The reset in the JMRI file is trying CV8=78 (I think the decoder file author didn't quite understand
some conventions when writing the file).? Train-o-matic's manual says any value works for reset, but manual testing of writing values to CV8 tells me that CV8=78 doesn't work.? ?So, the value in the JMRI file needs changing to CV8=8 which does work.?
b)? I've tested a Train-o-matic Mini on my test-setup.? A Digitrax Zephyr DCS50+PR3.? Which is as near as I can get to a DCS52, and I'm confident they will behave the same.??
With that, I can change the address, and alter the function map of a Train-o-matic decoder on the programming track using JMRI/DecoderPro.? ?If I move the decoder to the mainline output of the Zephyr, I can control it with its new address using either a JMRI on-screen throttle, or the Zephyr's throttle - both motor control and lighting control works.? ? BUT, as with all decoders, one MUST release the decoder from the Zephyr throttle before trying to drive it on another throttle (Buttons: "Loco" +?"Exit").? ?If the decoder is not released (any decoder, any brand), then with the Zephyr speed set to zero, the JMRI throttle cannot drive the decoder because the Zephyr will send a counter-command of "speed zero".?? - Nigel

Yes CV8=8 is like most decoders as in Train-o-Matic, this puts the decoder to pre set programe too CV=78 when I use DCS 52, and the train works, but in JMRI, loco setup the train stops working apart from read and write then when I have done this mad move it to main track, the train don't have anything.
?
I hope you can find what your looking for in way of a bug, to help. |
开云体育The bug is only in reset.?
In all other respects the decoder behaves correctly with JMRI or with a DCS 50.? ? ?So, I'm not convinced this is all the issues you are seeing.?
The bug-fix has been taken forwards, and should be in the next JMRI test release.?

I don't know of any other issues as I am new to DCC, all I know is that the decoder works when I have done a reset but when I use JMRI, I get a reponts that it is programed then when I move it to the main track it don't work untill I do a reset using the DSC52.
If there is somthing that I can look at with your help I will try it.
Thank you for your time. |
If you have created a roster entry and saved the values you have written to the decoder (which is best practice), put the loco back on the programming track when it's in it's "doesn't work" status, and instead of doing a reset, go to the CV pane and do a "Compare". Knowing which CV's may have changed, and what they've changed to, may give a clue.
?
The only other thing I can think of would be to read all CV's (again, when in the "doesn't work" condition) and starting with the basic movement and addressing CV's, evaluate each value for something that's "wrong". For example, if CV19 is anything other than zero, you've put the loco in a consist.

开云体育For my testing (done earlier).? ?I can do the following:?
JMRI connects to DCS-50 via PR3 USB interface.? ? ?(I'd expect your DCS-52 to connect directly via USB).?? I put a loco with decoder on the programming track.?
With JMRI, I can find a new loco decoder, and correctly identify as Train-o-matic.??
With JMRI, I can change the address of the loco, and change the function mapping.? I can read values from the decoder, and write new values to the decoder.?
If I then move the loco to the main line,? I can run the loco with either the DCS-50 or with a JMRI software throttle.??
