If you want a Mac that was made within the last year or so, you can’t beat Apple Refurbished because they come like-new and include a warranty.

If you want something older, I’ve had incredible luck with GroupOn. They have both grade-“A” refurbs and they also have scratch and dent items that are otherwise perfect at a nice discount. They have awesome sales on holidays.

Here is a list of the places that I know about:

Re: Reliable sources of used computers.

I have purchased 13" MacBook Pros from OWC (aka macsales.com). They were both mid 2012 non retina. It was a while ago. These are models that allow swapping ram and hard drives. I put 2TB SSD and 16 GB ram in them both, purchased from OWC at various times, when the prices improved. The 2012s are both still running. One in daily use as a main machine, the other as a backup server.

Often OWC can provide the Mac model with the ram and storage you might be looking for.

Thank you very much, Ben!

Just bookmarked that one. ?The one-year warranty is nice; better than Amazon and OWC , the latter of which only offers a 30-day, ?money-back offer.

I generally prefer Apple Refurbished, where I see the price is closer to $1,000+tax. I think the M2 model is about $1,200.

However, for a third-party, I would go to Backmarket for its 1-year warranty. Best deal I see there is?.

I put a new battery in that computer two years ago but he reports that, trying two different chargers, the charging light on the cable is green, but the charge shows 6% and will go no higher.

He downloaded one of the free battery apps from the App Store and it shows exactly the same thing: battery is at 6% and will not go above that.

The beachballs and slowdowns have returned.

I have him reset the SMC but that did not help.

I suspect it’s either the battery or the power supply and looking on the iFixit site, I don’t see any instructions for replacing a power supply.

Might any of you have any insights to offer that I can suggest this senior try?

Re: Power problem

It looks like it is not charging.
Have you tried disconnecting the mains and letting it discharge completely? Then reconnect the mains power and see if it charges to anything above zero

I don't see iPadOS specifically mentioned anywhere after the "in your Mac, iPhone and iPad", but would coconutBattery also work for an iPad connected via USB?

Good to see that it still works for Mojave and the licence is not expensive

This is extremely complicated with this model and he can’t manage it with his RA.

Is the battery still charging at all? If not, it might simply be a loose wire somwehere between the mains power input and the battery.

As stated: ?green light indicates a full charge. ?On the Apple Battery meter and on one downloaded from the App Store, the current state of charge is given as 6% and never changes from that figure.

I have come to the same conclusion, Ben.

His 84th birthday is 31 July; my wife and I decided to surprise him with an?Apple iPad Air (5th Generation): with M1 chip, 10.9-inch Liquid Retina Display, 64GB, Wi-Fi 6.

If anyone bothers to read on and has suggestions to make as to cases and keyboards compatible with this model of iPad, I would be grateful to have them. ?

It has a USB-C charge cable so I assume he will be able to connect his external HD to it and move files and folders back and forth??? Like this one…and am I right about moving files back and forth from a HDD to this iPad???

He has a bad case of rheumatoid arthritis, so instead of getting the Apple keyboard/case with it’s somewhat cramped dimensions, one of the seniors who attends my Zoom classes told me she got this Logitech one which is just about full sized, connects easily, etc., which she really likes:

Its dimensions are given as?10.9 x 4.9 x 0.6 inches, and the standard MB Pro keyboard is 11 inches, so pretty close.

We want to get him a stand/case so he can use it like a laptop and this Fintie is the brand?I have been using on my Mini iPad for years and it has held up quite well.

My iPhone X has a Jtech brand case and it too fits well, is well-crafted and has held up well, so it’s in the running also:

What say ye all???

Sorry, I’ve got nothing I can suggest as a fix, but does the battery app give a charging history? I’d be curious to know how it got down to 6%.

I use coconutBattery, which does that, and also does the same for any iOS device connected using USB.
