Re: Adobe Type Manager Query

Brent Pennington

Try searching on versiontracker.com. I just did a search there for Adobe Type Manager, and was able to download version 4.6.1 which is compatible with OS 9.

Hope this helps!

Re: Imac RAM upgrades

Hi Susan;

It depends on which version of iMac you have. If it is one of the original
iMacs, then yes, it is a bit like surgery (although much less bloody!), but
if you have one of the newer iMacs, then it is a relatively easy procedure.

Let us know!

A while ago, if you were clever/lucky, you could get Apple maintenance
manuals in pdf format (not handbooks) by downloading them from the APPLE
Europe ftp site. I got a couple (for old kit) which have proved invaluable.
However, with the passage of time I find the need for a couple more but the
old ftp address has come up with a blank. Obviously Apple are not
interested in giving folk easy access to these things because they are
meant for the official repair chaps but, for those of us who know how to
use a soldering iron and how not to die from intimate struggles with a CRT,
it seems a little Blairish to take them away. Does anyone know if they
have been moved and, if so, where to?
I think you might find just what you're looking for at:

It's a source of downloadable Apple SERVICE MANUALS
that explain how to diagnose a problem and make repairs,
and what replacement parts are required. Lots of very
helpful diagrams (complete exploded views, etc.) of just
about every Mac made, from 128k's on up. Also has
manuals for Monitors, Hard Drives, CD Rom Drives,
and more. The kind of stuff an Apple technician probably
carries around in his tool kit. Better warm up that iron!

It used to require it, but doesn't now. When MacOS 9 came out ATM was not
compatible with it. That's when I dumped it and have run Acrobat Reader
without it.

Huh?

Sure, remove it from your extensions folder and restart. I'm not sure if
just turning it off would disable it enough to not interfere. I avoid ATM as
much as possible because in the past in made for an unstable Mac system.

Friend Seeking FIRST Computer (advice)

BrianS

Hello,
I have a friend, who's surrounded by Windoze People, asked me to help him find a used comp (500 or less, canadian, thats $350US+shipping). We're in Montreal, by the way,and quebec is PC territory (don't laugh, it goes great with their lagging economy)

I thought about an old 540c or something, as he does not have any preference, but the older laptops (I also have a PB150) are a bit problematic (screen hinges and stuff like that)... so...

Perhaps someone could get in touch here, or in email, with some links (I've never even looked at eBay, for instance) or give me an idea how secure the transactions are with auctions, etc. I need links... I'm not sure what things go for, I do have the link for a general idea on prices, and I'd like to see my friend drivin a PowerPC, 8.6 , a fair amount of RAM (32, 64, etc), , he's a newbie, after all,(even a 7500-9600 with 7.6.1 would be very nifty IMHO) and wants to write, see what the Internet's about, etc. A really great guy, so I don't want him making any large-scale mistakes, okay? Thanks a million...(I'm in Digest mode, so if it's no trouble please email me direct... thanks)

Hiya... Is it possible to get a MIME type digest instead of the digest I'm
getting? The digest I receive comes willy nilly, sometimes once, sometimes
more times every day. It is always difficult to follow. I prefer, by far,
the MIME digest we used to have access to.

Where does one go to change from one format to another? Or are there no
choices with Yahoo e-groups?

Alien jpg's, .doc's, etc

BrianS

Hello All,

For the last week or so, the strangest thing has been happening:

I have downloaded a couple of picture files (jpeg) and after the download completes, i'm left with an Application. You know, the little diamond-shaped app icon. When I click on it, I get a dialog which states "The application xyz.jpg could not be launched, Error -39" or something similar.

I thought it was an iCab problem at first. I'm on an LC475 (OS7.6.1). This is following years of trouble-free downloads. Now, I was online with a cousin last night on AOL Instant messenger (yuck) and the same thing happened, and, when i wrote back the old "sorry, it didn't come through", she re-sent as a Windows bmp (yuck, again) and the same result, THEN, she sent a MS doc file of the pic, and after watching a 1.3MB file being transferred, all that was in my designated download folder was a 32k application, the same old (new) thing.

As if that weren't odd enough. Earlier in the week I kept one of these little 32k so-called applications (alien pic files? I don't know) on my hard drive, and the next tme clicked on a Graphic Converter document (jpg), instead of Graphic Con launching, I got the same bloody Error39 message...upon trashing the oddball app, GCon launched as usual....

I am at, or near, my wits end...any ideas, even the most absurd, will be gratefully entertained..

All the Best,
BrianS

Re: Digest Number 9

Daniel Gagner

No, I'd turn it upside down and the computer would spin up and boot then I'd
turn it right side up again. That was a long time ago. Sometimes just
getting it sideways would do the trick. It's not the drive head it was the
grease they use in the center of the drive platter that would stick. The
drive wouldn't start spinning after the grease would get old and
sticky...hence "stiction".

You can move a computer while the drive is on but a sharp bump will cause
the heads to scrape the surface of the platter. That's why we shut down
properly and park the heads before we move a machine.

Unsticking that hard drive in the SE sounds strange but he's exactly right.
I had an SE in the late 80's early 90's. I'd have to turn my SE upside down
sometimes during startup to get it to work. A lot of early 40-80 mb Quantum
drives had this problem.
When you do this, do you leave it upside down or turn it back over? I
have a 2 gig drive that got hot and I think the heads stuck to the
platter. I haven't messed with it much - need to get something to
transfer to before I start it up! I thought you couldn't move the
drives while they are on - or am I mistaken?

Re: SOE - Re: [Advice] Best slide show with sound?

Brent Pennington

To whoever was looking for a way to make a slide show with sound (I lost track
through all the replies), why not use iMovie? You can import jpeg images and
set how long they appear on the screen and add music. Then export it to
quicktime, and all you have to do is play the movie and the images will display
for as long as you set them to and then move on.

Hope this helps.

Merry Christmas

FWIW, I use Eudora 4.2.2, and like it very much (but have nothing
against the smart, good-looking folks on this list who use any other
e-mail client, including Claris E-mailer version 1.0. Please no posts
calling me a nincompoop).

Take care,
Me too :-) Meaning: I won't get drawn into this one, but my feeling is that it boils down to security problems (unless all the enriched text/html is disabled, in Outlook X) versus inevitable forced reboots (if Eudora Pro is left on in the background)... However, if one uses the freebie, Eudora Lite 3.1.3, it will check your mail and rifle everything into nice neat folders, all day and night without so much as a peep. Small footprint, no security problems. There are always advantages and disadvantages to any choice.

At around 5:57 AM +0000, on 12.20.2000, Steph took a sidelong glance, drew a deep breath, and had this to say:

In my older version of Eudora Pro (3.1.3), you hold down the Option+Command
key while clicking on the URL, and you will get a dialog box asking you to
pick the application to do http. Then just navigate to iCab on your hard
drive and select it. After that it will automatically use that application
until you change it. Hope this works for you.

Yup yup, Thank you Steph, it had been a long time since I had to select a browser, on Pro4.2.2 its Option-double click... Thanks again :-)

iCab Situation / Puzzling

BrianS

Hello All,

Is there an iCab user out there who can help me sort something out? I use iCab (the 68k version) on my LC475. Great browser, BUT, I don't see anything resembling "Open This Link in New Window". Some websites are so poorly-designed, that a separate window is a 'must'. I tried Option-click on the links in question, but that downloads the file associated with the link, all well and good, however the download is an ASP application, apparently, and trying to open it brings the old -192 Error (PPC on a 68k, no-no). I abhor the thought of going back to Navigator, any suggestions? TIA

All the Best,
BrianS
