TUNER Xmit Power on IC-7000

I cannot seem to find an exact answer in the manual or online.? When tuning (in my case an AH-4), does the IC-7000 use a lower power?

The AH-4 shows a tuning level of around 10-15W.? If I have my IC-7000 on HF set to 100%, and hit the TUNER button, am I forcing 100W into the AH-4, or a reduced power?

i.e.? should I manually be dropping the power to 15%, changing frequency and tuning (or auto-tuning using PTT) and then manually increasing power back up again?

I believe that it is the latter.... the manual will confirm that (I use an AH-4 with my IC-7K).

Hello Grant VA6GT ,
If you connect an erxternal tuner like the AH-4 or similar preceeding Icom models to the external port of icom rigs like the IC-7000, when you hit the "tune" button it starts a tuning cycle during it the power will automatiuc be reduced to abt 10w RF, not depending from mode and set power level, and when tuning cycle is ended all will be as before. If the antenna can not be tuned, the "TUNER" will remain off, and you do not see it on the front panel .
There are also simulators to be plugged into ICOM rigs connector that simulate an AH-4 to allow the use of the "tune" button with other external tuners.
You may find documentation on this also on Icom manuals and looking on the net for Icom tuner simulators.
The AH-4 is a good external tuner, but care nust be taken to avoid some wire antenna lenghts; this is also well explained in the AH-4 manual; if you do not have it, I suggest to get it, downloading from some manual site.
Hope this helps you Grant;? 73

It is my recollection that when the IC-7000's TUNE button was pushed or when PTT is pushed the FIRST time after the frequency has been changed that the power was automatically reduced to around 10-15 watts while the AH4 was tuning and then the previous power setting is restored. This of course requires that the AH4 control cable is plugged into the back of the IC-7000.

The last time I had an auto tuner connected to my IC-7000, I was using an MFJ-929, and page 7 (last paragraph) of the MFJ-929's manual
states what I just said, with the note that the interface was compatable with the Alinc EDX-2, ICOM's AH-3 and AH-4, Kenwood AT-300 and certain Yaesu Radios...? For Icom radios the radio's TUNE button or the MFJ-929 TUNE button can be used, but for certain Yaseu Radios you could only use the TUNE button on the MFJ-929.

For any Icom radio with the 4 pin Molex TUNER connector, and any external tuner that offers an Icom Molex TUNER port adapter cable:??
?
The Icom transceiver has weak pull-up resistors to 13.8 volts on the _START and _KEY pins.? The tuner _KEY pin has a stronger pull-up to +5 volts.? ?When the Icom transceiver starts up and detects +5 volts on the _Key pin,? the Icom transceiver assumes an AH-4 compatible tuner is connected.? ?When the transceiver front panel TUNER button is pressed, the Icom transceiver pulls down the _START pin and waits for the the tuner to pull down the _KEY pin, at which point the Icom transceiver automatically transmits a continuous carrier at a reduced power of 10 watts.? When the tuning process completes (or times out) the Icom transceiver automatically resumes the previous mode and power setting.??
?

Refer to pages 6 and 7 to see how the _START and _Key signals operate on the LDG and Icom autotuners and ATU- 100

When doing tuning?with?the IC-7000, I am seeing about 10 watts output?from the IC-7000.

The radio lowers power out for all tuning operations until tuning is completed.

When you use the Tune function... with a AH-4 or equivalent external tuner, the rig kicks down to 10-15 watts for the tuning procedure.? Then reverts back to whatever mode you were in prior to hitting the tune button. . and either stops when it sees about 1:1 SWR or it times out after a certain amount of time.

There are many companies that sell a dongle ($30)? that you install on the 4 pin molex on the rear and that simulates an AH4 so you can tune even with a manual tuner.. This will work with many ICOM rigs. I also use it on my IC756proII..

The capacitor is not specified voltage, but 15-25 VDC will work..
