Icom to ATAS-100 automatic controller project
#all
hello,
For those interrested I am starting on a project to automaticaly control the YEASU ATAS-100/120 HF antenna using an ICOM radio like the IC7000. It will be most likely Arduino based, using CI-V to snif freq, S-Meter and SWR info and the D4 antenna controller to control the radio. I am looking at multiple variation from very small package with just a couple LED indiccators to 2X16 and 4X40 LCD to TFT Color LCD with touch screen. for older ICOM radios missing some of the needed CI-V commands (pre IC-706mkIIG), I will had an SWR bridge to adress this. still a long way to go but look here for updates. 73 Richard VE2DX |
one of my other projects is the external 8 memory keypad for the ICOM 7300.

Me too. It seems to have always been common to dismiss these antennas as ineffectual, but I always had good results with mine. As ever, proper grounding is the key!?

Ok here is an update
at this point; - established Ci-v hardware interface - ci-v code done - testing dual speed to help fine tune tuning. - lcd 2x16 and 4x20 working hid done - color tft display version , I am working on hid here come along fast - ant interface establish - for older radios established swr bridge? - still working to define some functions - working on freq sniffing to establish direction. - need to work on antenna parking functions - need to transfert to ardruno nano pateform - need to source case or get help to 3d print diff cases - need to dig into atu icom connector operations to trigger ant from radio and radio from interface - need to make very small no display version. - clean and document code - need to make pcbs of diff versions - need to document project (qst?) so lots to do many already finished, anyone with pcb design or 3d printer that want to help let me know |

I am not familiar with the ATAS-100 antenna.? Is it a version of a "screwdriver" antenna?? If so, the TurboTuner-2 should work just fine with the IC-7000.? I just bought one to use with my IC-706 Mk II.

Unlike most screwdriver or tarheal antenna, the ATAS100 or 120 as two major difference.
1- controlled voltage is 8vdc for down and 12vdc for up, and is sent to motor via the coax. 2- atas type antenna has no reference feedback. And it is not supported by turbotuner-2 thus we need to feed dc over the coax ... Done and monitor swr either via ci-v (prefered but not supported on older unit before ic706mkIIG) or swr bridge. in will also monitor time movement and before vs requested frequency to define direction. so lot of work ahead, but it is coming along... byw i am hoping this will be a lot cheaper too... 73 VE2DX? |
You are aware that Icom changed the frequency format when their radios addressed frequencies over 1GHz. There's an extra byte (two hex digits) in the newer radios. I've looked at source code for a PIC based antenna switch that is incompatible with the newer radios for that reason. I apologize if you already knew this. Kevin N5KRG ? |

Oh dear. You wouldn't like to reconsider something like groups.io, would you Richard??

I'm afraid that if it goes to FB, an awful lot of people will never get to see any more of this exciting project.? Bob
