[IC-7000] Re: A Recap...

MKM

If the video out is using composite video (and it looks like it is), do not expect a high quality image on the external display.

Because of this, Icom may only pass the TV image to video out and not the display itself.

Anyway, I am very pleased with the product and looking forward to get one asap.

Please Icom, do not release the IC-7000 until all QC is done. Thanks.

Sorry about the typo in this last post. I distictly saw Video Out
(not Video In) on the placard on the bottom of the rig. I can only
blame too many hours flying from Dayton and some jetlag.

I'm anxious to try hooking it to one of those 7" TFT flat screens
for a cool little heads up display. Someone told me they picked one
up in Dayton for $169. I'm not sure I can justify an in-dash DVD
player with the screen.

Yup. It's video in. I see the Universal Radio site states this
too. At this point, the solution to video in would be a $24.95
Radio Shack RF Modulator.

Well now that I look back, Scott did say 'video out'.

Depends on how much resolution the display is using. I'd suspect a
display of that size has limited total resolution anyway, so a standard TV
display may faithfully reporoduce it. In any case, I'd be surprised if
they didn't drive the display inside the unit with standard video.

True about the resolution. In any event we can only get 480i max out of composite. It should do the job just fine.

On another note, lets speculate which channels we can rx...I believe ch13 is the highest VHF TV channel. So maybe channels 2,4,5,7,9,11.. enough to monitor breaking news. This should be real handy in hurricane season. Is there a real time weather radar channel in Florida? Not the cable one but a free over-the-air?

I understand it to be VHF-TV (channels 2-13). This is easily fed with
a cheap modulator for a video input. This feature is interesting
because it isn't found on the 7000's big brothers. Some engineer must
have just thought it was cool (it is BTW).

Much of the radio is not new. The RF deck appears to be an updated
706 (I see better AM broadcast sensitivity and up to 35 watts on 70cm
in the specs). The DSP engine and features will be coming straight
out of 7800/756ProIII development. These are already very stable
platforms. The truly NEW part of this radio is scaling the interface
to that little screen.

With anything that might fit on that screen, composite video should be
more than adaquate. It won't look at slick as the SVGA output of the
7800, but it's not the same class of radio (or size). Adding a VGA
connector to the back would start cutting into precious heat sink
space :-).
