[IC-7000] Auto tune help

Cody, Dennis H

There are tuner settings in the 7k menu that need to be enabled. I enabled PTT so every time I hit PTT when going to a new freq it tunes and don't use tune button. Reminder the 7000 looks for a tuner on power up. So be sure and cycle power.

I just purchased an IC-7000 along with an MFJ-929 auto tuner with Icom cable and am not sure how this all works. I press the TUNER/CALL button on the rig and 'Tuner' shows on the display but nothing more happens. If I hold the button for 2 seconds or more that doesn't change anything either. The 929 doesn't indicate the frequency and there doesn't appear to be any output. However, on SSB if I talk into the microphone the auto-tune features starts to work but takes a while to get a good SWR because the power output varies with my voice. On the other hand switching to CW or FM and keying the rig (CW) or the mike (FM) it rapidly matches up and both the SWR and frequency are displayed.

I had thought that when you push the TUNE button it would auto-tune and I would be all set. I figured this is what you did when changing frequency and just listening. But this isn't what happens and it appears I have to transmit to get the auto-tune to work. Is my understanding incorrect? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, I have the MFJ cable for the tuner so the power is supplied from the
7K. I also enabled PTT and that works okay but I didn't want to have to use
that feature to get it to tune up. I also went to remove the JP4 jumper per
the MFJ instruction but it wasn't there. A call to MFJ was friendly but the
tech I needed to talk to was on vacation.

Turns out I had forgotten to set ICOM into the menu selection using the MODE button on the MFJ tuner. Once I did that everything worked.
