IC-7000 Outdoors

All,

Several weeks ago I took my IC-7000 to Galveston and used it to activate the Tall Ship Elissa for Museum Ships Weekend.? Our station was setup on the pier along side the ship under an awning.? Bright sun streamed in from all sides.? The display of the IC-7000 was not really visible.? I made a shade from a cardboard box, which helped but was not satisfactory.? I was able to use the logging software on my laptop to get things up and running, but the situation was not a good one.? I'm looking for any suggestions to improve the situation for future outdoor operation,

Thanks in advance,

Robie - AJ4F

Set up an external monitor of appropriate size (maybe 7 to 14 inch diagonal {maximum}).? I use a 7 inch Sharper Image battery set that KB0XA used to make up a set of cables for direct connction to the 7000.? It's what I use in my Go-Box for Field Day.? Monitor MUST accept composite video.? An older analog TV would work just fine.

I'm quite sure that Don has quite doing these kits, though.

I always used an external monitor (7" was best resolution). I even used a larger monitor on field days so others could see it better. Good luck.....

If you do use an external monitor be sure to have the monitor unplugged at the mains before plugging in to the radio video out.

I have seen one that was damaged from a voltage spike and took out the Logic board.

Hello Robie, AJ4F,
????? I often use the IC-7000 while activating Castles, Abbeys, lakes?????? and FloraFauna References, from years.
????? You may use a small 5" - 7" external monitor, sometimes I used the?????? video camera input of my Nuvi Car navigator, vy OK; or even better?????? you may have the IC7000 controlled via CAT software; I love?????? HamRadio DeLuxe suite, logger cat and multimode (use this mostly?????? not /p, however).
????? What I would also suggest, is to protect the IC-7000 from direct?????? sun and heath; with CAT you may have it staying quietly in a?????? shadowed fresh place.
????? With car batteries you may not have from Icom the full 100w RF out;???????? although this is not strictly necessary, for full power I?????? used the fine Dan N8XJK Boost Regulator by TG Electronics.
????? Endly, I always use the AH-4 tuner at the antenna base for best?????? results and perfect matching; vertical AH-2b or 9m Fishing Rod, or?????? InvVee Switched Dipoles.
????? 73 and have fun in /P !
????? ?????????????????????????????????????? Augusto HB9TZA / I2JJR
???

All,

Thanks for the many suggestions!

1. I spent a good deal of time optimizing the display on the IC-7000, however I could not find a combination of color, contrast and brightness that worked.? The level of light from the sun simply overpowered the display.? I used the N1MM as my logging program and my PC was significantly easier to view than the transceiver.

2. Most suggestions related to use of a external monitor using the video output capabilities of the IC-7000.? This the approach i will try next.

3. Perhaps I can come up with a better location next year. Maybe something with 3 sides to block some of the sunlight.

Thanks again,

Robie - AJ4F?
