Preparing to somewhat dissamble IC7000 control head

The display has become erratic on my 7000. Powers on and operates properly. But after being on 30 minutes or so the display will blank although the?
radio continues to operate properly. (Installed mobile with separation cable) Often I can lightly tap or move the head about and display comes back so I suspect
an internal connection is becoming faulty. Tapping or moving the remote cable around has no effect. I plan to remove the head this afternoon and take a closer look. Are there any particular pitfalls or precautions I need to take when looking into this? Thanks.

Be very careful with the ribbon cables?
since the 7k has been around for so long the plastic ribbon cables are usually very brittle.

The second new 7000 I bought started to have screen problems.? It would show static but never cut off.? I send it back under warranty to Icom twice but it never misbehaved while there.? I got it back and it started it again after a day or so.? I called Icom and spoke to Dan, the repair supervisor, and asked him to send me a complete set of ribbon cables.? One of the 2 cables that plugged into the front of the PA board was the culprit.? One of the foils had de-laminated and pealed back when it was assembled.? 14 years later and it still works.
You might be able to reach in and push it on the stiffeners to see if there is a problem with a cable.? Normally, you have to de-solder the coax connectors and the finals to remove the PA board to get to either of those.? I made a thin pair of tweezers with rubber grippers to prevent damage.? There can't be much more than a 3mm gap for them so it will be tight to do what I did.? There are other cables that can cause this but these two are the most difficult.
Good luck,
Robert
