Supergain antennas
One of the references cited by Mike Traffie is the paper by R. P. Haviland - W4MB. This paper, entitled "SUPERGAIN ANTENNAS, Possibilities and problems," was published in Communications Quarterly, Summer 1992. This is not an easy reference to find, so I make a pdf file of it and place it in the Files Area, Publications. Please note that the paper comprises 18 pages and formed a large file, 3.3 MB. 73 de Barry - W4WB

Hex Beam vs. MA5B CushCraft Mini Beam
Well I believe that my land lord is going to allow me to put up a small beam at my office QTH! This is a dream come true as absolutely no beams are allowed in my snooty neighborhood. I am trying to decide between the HEX-Beam and the CushCraft MA5B. Both get great reviews on e-Ham. I also e-mailed severl users of both and all are positive about their respective choices. Thw CushCraft has a much lower price, and seems to have a better F/B ratio, while the HEX has specrtacular bandwidth with reasonable F/S ratios. I am intrigued by the HEX and Mike T. has been very helpful with questions, etc. ANY input on this would be help[ful. Since my company (I'm the CEO) is paying for this cost is not the object here. Thanks in advance! harry, W6DXO

K8AC's Installation of the HX-5B
We found the detailed installtion information provided by K8AC on http://home.sprintmail.com/~sentek/hexpage1.htm to be of value when we assembled the HX-5B. If you are going to be installing one, this is something to have printed out IMO. 73 de Barry - W4WB

HX-5B up and working great!
2
Welcome to the HEX-BEAM Group. I will start it off my presenting a short note on the HX-5B we recently installed at W4RT. After sitting in the box for 15 months, we finally got the HX-5B HEX- BEAM (S/N 81) assembled and up in the air at our company club station W4RT (Tornado Amateur Radio Club) in Huntsville, AL. This antenna replaced the old Hustler 4-BTV we had mounted on the office roof for several years. To my knowledge, this is the first permanent installation of a HEX-BEAM in the Tennessee Valley. Although our experience with this antenna is limited, the initial impression is very favorable. If you would like to learn more, then please see the file "HX-5B at W4RT Club Station" in the Installations Folder in the Files Area. This Folder is a good place to locate files about your installation. Photos not embedded in the text in the file should be place in the Photos Area. 73 de Barry - W4WB Moderator

Comparative Testing
Anyone had the opportunity to do a side-by-side comparision of the HEX-BEAM and any other beam or antenna? If so, please share your experiences. Also, kindly explain your test in some detail if possible. Tnx es 73 de Barry - W4WB

I have been reading the Hex-Beam web site and considering purchasing the multi-band versions. This seems like a good place to read what other owners and experimenters have to say about the antenna. 73's Steve kc0acq

HexBeams - out of ham bands?
2
I am an Army MARS/SHARES operator and find the HexBeam's light weight and low signature very attractive. Unfortunately, the frequencies which I utilize are quite a bit outside the amateur bands and are not harmonically related, to say the least. Does anyone have any feel for how well a 30M or 40M HexBeam would run if utilized with an SGC-235 tuner? Frequencies of interest range from around 6.8 to 25 MHz... 73, john N3SKO AAT3BF/AAM3O/AAA9AC

CQ Review of the Five-Band Hex-Beam
2
A nice review article of the HX-5B appeared on pages 30-33 of the April 2000 issue of CQ. It was written by Lew McCoy, W1ICP (now sadly a SK). In Lew's concluding remarks, he stated "I was very impressed by the HEX beam. If I had to rate beams on a 1 to 10 scale, I would give this antenna a solid 10." For members that own a HEX-BEAM, what have your experiences with it been? Any observations of performance vs height? 73 de Barry - W4WB p.s. I have no financial interest in Traffie Technology.

Easy installation of HX5-B on Aluma Tower
I installed my HX5-B on a nested tower by myself, at night, and I'm 82 years old. It was really quite easy. Rope lines were run between two trees to suspend a pulley directly above the tower, which is attached to the house. A vertical line through the pulley was secured to the hub of the HX5-B, and the beam was then raised to the roof. Working on the roof alongside the nested tower, the beam was raised above the tower and the short mast in the hub was directed into the rotor. It took only about a half hour of work on the roof to put the HX5-B in place on the tower. The beam is so light and easy to handle it only required one hand to handle the support line while the other hand guided the mast into the rotor clamps. I will post some pictures of this installation. Dick, W2GFF

My Hex Beam is not very high but it works very well
My call is K2ACB.In July of 2000 I purchased the HX5B Hex Beam.I had it installed professionally on my roof in September 2000.My Hex Beam is not very high.It is on a Glen Martin 4.5 foot roof tower. The antenna is on a 5 foot mast and I use a Yaesu G450-A rotator. My antenna is only about 9 feet off the top of the roof of my 2 story house. It is about 36 feet from the ground to the antenna.I have an Icom 756 Pro transceiver and a Ten Tec Centurion amplifier. I usually operate barefoot or if I use my amplifier I do not run it more than 500 watts.Since the antenna is low and only about 30 feet through the roof from the second floor,if I run the amplifier to full power I overload the tv's ,telephones ,radios and speakers in the house.I do have them filtered but that doesn't help much when I run almost 1.5 kw. I do not have this problem of overload with my Gap Titan vertical which is about 60 feet from my house. I consistently get about 2 to 4 S units better reports with the Hex Beam than I get with the vertical.I average about 12 db FB on the Hex Beam from reports I receive. My Hex Beam works out extremely well on the WARC bands and 10 meters and very good on 15 and 20 meters. After speaking to Mike Traffie on the phone several times before and after I put up the antenna I finally had an opportunity to meet him personally at the Dayton Hamvention in May 2001.I must say that the support Mike gives to Hex Beam owners is excellent. I could have put my Hex Beam up higher but I purposely put it on a low roof tower because I wanted the antenna to be as unobtrusive and with the lowest profile as possible.I work out fairly well with the antenna and have gotten some very good reports with it from all over the world.I have not made that many comparison tests with it.I did make some with friends who were running large tribanders such as a KLM KT34XA and 4 element monoband beams. One has to take into consideration a number of factors such as antenna height.location etc,etc when running comparison tests and my tests were not very scientific. My little Hex Beam could not compete with the large tribanders, quads or monobanders.Running the same power they averaged one to two S units better than my signal.I spoke to Mike Traffie about this and he attributed this to the height of my Hex Beam.He said that if it was higher and farther away from my roof I would work out better and be able to compete with the big arrays better.Perhaps he is right. But I am satisfied with my antenna the way it is now. I have had from other qth's a Mosley Classic 33 beam which I had up for 12 years in midtown Manhattan in New York City.It was on the roof of a 14 story apartment building. That was under my old call sign of WB2DZW and I also had a Cushcraft A3 beam which I had on top of a 4 story building in the West End of London England for 15 monthswhen I lived there.I would say that my Hex Beam is superior to those antennas and I also believe it is far superior to your average tribander. What really sold me on the Hex Beam was the April 2000 article in CQ magazine on the antenna by the late Lew McCoy.It was one of the best reviews of any antenna I had ever read.I had met Lew McCoy at Dayton in previous years and I had a lot of respect for him as an antenna authority. Prior to deciding about purchasing the Hex Beam I was contemplating purchasing the Force 12 C3 or C3SS antennas.I had heard people using them on the air and had heard only good things about them.At present I still have not made a comparable test comparing my Hex Beam to a C3 or C3SS antenna. However I wanted as low a profile antenna as I could find and the Hex Beam has more than met my expectations. I know that there are some people out there who are skeptical about the antenna. One of them is L.B.Cebik,W4RNL who has modeled and written about antennas.I met him at the Dayton hamvention this year.He told me he felt the Hex beam was equivalent to a good 2 element beam but was not as good as the force 12 beam. However at that time he had not used or personally heard a Hex Beam though he had modeled the 5 bander.

Hi, I am just a "lurker" here because I can't afford a HexBeam :-) I have a Lightning Bolt Delta Loop up on a roof top tower and am dreaming about a HexBeam some day when I win the lottery (hihihi). Pse visit http://www.n9vv.com/antennas.html for pix of my modest setup. will be reading the mail, dit dit de ken n9vv <n9vv@...>

Hexbeam
Anyone thinking about buying a Hex who has never worked one? Commensurate with my other life, I will be glad to sked with you. I running exclusively with a barefoot FT-1000MP, the Hex is at approximately 30' AGL and my reference antenna is a half vertical / half horizontal tuned-feeder fed doublet. I have worked about 3 other Hexs and as others continue to say, I have no $$$$ link to Traffie. 73 - WB6ROH - Doug

I am new to this group

Hello friends, I am a new comer in this group. Since there is no one I ever know who is using Hexbeam, I wish to get as much info as possible from this group. Till now, I have never seen any negative comment on this antenna but need some more positive factors to make my decision. I appreciate your input and look forward to work with you guys on the air with this beam some day. 73 de JR1NHD, Shin

Hex-Beam: One Man's Bottom Line
I've owned my HX5-B since August. I only work 20-10 SSB, all 5 bands, primarily DX. My beam is mounted on my chimney with a Yaesu 450A rotor, the 20 mtr level is about 37 feet high and 7 feet above a slanting wood-shingled roof. There are rather full 60 foot high trees about 25 feet from the Beam, SW to NW. My QTH is on Long Island, NY, about 1/2 mile north of the Atlantic Ocean, 1 mile south of a large bay, elevation less than 10 feet above sea level. I run a Mark V and a Quadra amp at slightly above 1kw; a fabulous set-up which I love, but still 1/3 less power than the big boys. I've never done any technical testing so this is "anecdotal", as they say. If I can hear the DX stronger than, say, S4, I work them within 3-5 minutes, usually first or second call, no matter how big the pile-up. Period. No exceptions. Honestly. Indeed, when I first realized what was happening, I joked that the Hex-Beam has taken all the fun out of it. If I don't get someone after about two calls, I start checking my wires and gauges. I can't imagine using any other antenna, all I'd like to try is stacking the Hex-Beam. I don't why we all feel obligated to say we don't have a financial interest in Traffie, but I don't either. But you couldn't ask for a more solicitous supplier or nicer guy than Mike. As far as I'm concerned, there's no other antenna. I can't want to figure out how where to put a 40 meter one and get on that band as well. If I sound infatuated, it's because I am. Bob, K2SGO

Pointing Indicator
Dick, W2GFF in Fairhope, AL, came up with a good idea. If you look at the photo of his tower and antenna (see Photos area), you will see a bright-yellow plastic arrow he made to help figure out which way the beam is pointing. This is particularly helpful under low-light conditions. If you are interested, I'm sure Dick will provide more details. 73 de Barry - W4WB

Please see the folder entitled "SWR Plots" in the Photos area. Double click and the image will be enlarged. These SWR plots are for the HX-5B antennas at WB6ROH and W4RT. A lot of similarity can be seen between them, but there are some interesting difference. 73 de Barry - W4WB
