X-66 Trouble shooting Help

Jim - I think I have found a problem, but not sure.?

I have been looking at the proportional keyers, and monitoring the voltage at K1 (key input voltage) and no matter what or how many drawbars are pulled out, the voltage stays at -15VDC.? If I read the theory of operation correctly, shouldn't this voltage increase and decrease depending on the position of the drawbars?

I would be grateful to anyone who can address this for me.

Thanks
Bob

Bob, I wrote Paco and he was going to get you registered on the Hammond X66 site.
Also, and this is info for all members which could have questions re. X66s There is a great repair
man in Brussels which installed MIDI on his X66. He may be able to help in any problems you need assistance with. He speaks English , this is his Email.....?dan.vigin@...

Bob, try Skynet.be as for your last question re proportional and voltages I can't respond to that.

Jim Mc

I just got a message from him and he has offered to help me.? Thank you for making the connection.

Bob,? How is the x66 coming along, what is or was the problem?

Jim Mc

Hey Jim -
Thanks for asking.? Had to take some time off from the organ to dig out of a snow storm we had here.? I live in the country, so when the white stuff comes, you gotta get it moved and moved fast.? Good thing I like snow.

Making good progress on the organ.? Stilling trying to isolate the low level output from the 4 outputs to the tone cabinets.? Working on the photo cells in the swell pedal now but other then that, it's coming right along.?

I"ve never heard an X-66 play, so not sure what to expect out the of the tone cabinets.? But the Mic output is strong so thinking they are not the issue.

Again, thanks for asking.? Will keep you posted.? Bottom line is I'm learning a lot and having fun working on this organ.? Wisconsin winters are long so this is a great project for me.

Best,
Bob

I met Dan Vigin in Mexico several years ago he is an excellent tec for the X66. I'm sure he can help you with any problems you might run across in your venture. Please keep posting on your updates.

Later, Jim Mc.

Hey Jim -

Dan has been my go to man for this project.? He has been very helpful and I am appreciative of his help.? I think he has all the circuits for this organ memorized.? Nice guy.? Wish he were closer.

Bob, when I was in Mexico at the X66 convention, Dan did a seminar on how to install midi on the
X66, he was amazing to follow his instructions.
I heard they are going to have another convention in September this year,, it is usually held in Cancun and it is well worth it if you could contact Paco for details.
I doubt if I can go this year as I have a cat that requires meds 3 times a day to keep him alive, however there are people from all over the world that show up for it, tons of fun...

Later, Jim Mc.

Yeah a sandy beach sounds really nice right about now.? We had +6F here this morning so a good day to go work in? my shop on the organ.?

I have a White lab who is totally dependent on me so like you, I will have to pass on the convention.? Would be fun to meet and greet other Hammond fans.

Bob

Does anyone know the amount of oil that should be used when doing the yearly oiling of the X-66 tonewheel generator?
Thx.

The same as any other tonewheel generator? Fill each cup on the generator twice, allowing the oil to drain into the generator each time, A few drops into the filler tubes on the motor, (The X-66 is a self starting generator if I recall correctly).

The difference is though, the X66 like the B3/C3 after a certain time during their manufacturing no longer have the cups which were mounted on the back of the playing manual assembly attached to the copper tubes which fed the funnels at the top of the run motor/scanner and tone generator.

?

Typically a tone wheel Hammond required ? ounce of oil per year.? With the X-66 generator one half an ounce will probably be more than plenty and the generator will be “sloshing” in oil.? I think ? ounce should be sufficient for the tone generator of 12 wheels.? Use the rest for the Howard motor, and scanner oiling cups of which there are two.

Make that a total of THREE oiling cups for the X-66 Scanners.

....and that should have also read 1/4 oz of oil for the tone generator.

Hey Don - thanks for the info on x-66 oiling.? My TG does not have the traditional plastic cups, just a hole in the felt cover so that's what prompted my question. My TG froze up on Saturday so I spent two hours Sunday pulling it out of the organ and getting it going.? Don't want to have to do that again. Bob

Would anyone happen to have an X-66 service manual that shows the component layout for the "expression pedal pre-amp" board?? It's assembly number AO-32299?
Thanks. Bob

Sounds as though the plastic cup may have got knocked off the top of the TG at sometime. In the absence of the cup adding oil through the hole, slowly,? should be fine.

Yeah I've had a few parts knocked off me over the years also.? Shot in 7cc of oil so we're good to go.? Thx.

Hey Jim -

Good news is the X-66 is up and working to my satisfaction.? Everything is great with exception of two keys missing the 16' stop.? I added a pre-amp in line with the tone cabinet so I could tweek? base and treble for the 4 channels to my liking.? It really sings great!!!!
?
The good news is? I won't be bothering you for a while.? The bad news is that in the near future I'm gonna start working on my other X-66.? I've learned a lot on this one so hopefully I won't be as needy next time around.
?
Mega thanks to you and others who have offered advise and support along the way.? I owe you one.

Video and/or soundfile(s), or it didn't happen! ;-)

But seriously, I've never heard an X-66.? I would love to see and/or hear one.
