Converting digital keyboard to internal power supply
Have a hammond skx and I am constantly worrying that I will either lose the external 12vdc power supply, or else bump and damage the somewhat?flimsy socket and be up a creek without a paddle.? I am planning on installing a hgh quality12vdc power supply internally, fed from an IEC socket added to the rear panel of the organ. Fuses will be used as close as physically possible to the mains input as well as to the output from the DC board, obviously. Any considerations when doing this that I'm not thinking of? Particularly with grounding the chassis through the earth connection on the IEC, given the instrument was designed?for a floating 2-wire DC supply? |
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýGround loops could be a problem if you connect the chassis to mains ground, and then plug into an amplifier that also has a mains ground. If the internal power supply is designed to be used as a double insulated appliance, then a safety ground to chassis isn't strictly necessary. If you do connect the keyboard chassis to ground, then am isolating DI box with "ground lift" may be needed in the audio line between the keyboard and any external amplifier. The only other concern would be finding a suitable space inside
the keyboard for the power supply, in my experience, internal
space is at a premium in many keyboards. Have several trials to
make sure everything fits in the available space with suitable
clearance before doing anything irreversible like cutting a hole
for the IEC connector. Also be aware that switched mode power
supplies radiate electromagnetic noise, try to keep the power
supply as far away as possible from sensitive audio circuits. If
noise pick up is a problem, you may need to enclose the power
supply in a metal box, (with suitable ventilation holes),
connected to chassis ground.
