[hammond_zone] Hammond Porta B and Leslie 760
Lars Karstensen - Infinity Trading ApS
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýDear Wim,
?
Old Hammond and especially Old leslies that are not taken care
of, tend to get worn down. I assume that this is also what happened with these
two leslies.
?
I have been onto several leslies during my many
years with hammond, and some where even close to scrap, but still. Once we had
them tuned up they where as good as new.
?
I tried many things also to improve the sound of the solid
state leslies in the direction of the Valved sisters. Putting a tupe-preamp in
between did help alot to the warmth of the sound. If you do not push the Solid
state leslies to fare, you can still get a very decent sound.
?
By the way the X-5 was one of the best portabels Hammond made,
especially if you go for the rough and direct sound. The B-200 where more into
soft and sustain.
?
Best regards
lars

?
Last week I did a recording in a small private studio in my
neighbourhood... As a dedicated Hammond player a was?surprised because of
the Hammond¡§PortaB standing there, together with two Lesie's a 760 and
antoher one (don't know the number, but it also was a solid state)
I?couldn't wait to hear that organ, but when I did,?it was not as cool
as I thought...?The Leslie had a lot of ground noise,?there was an
awful lot of mechanical?noise... and the typical Leslie sound
characteristics where lacking...
?
Anyway, what I wanted to say?is that a good Leslie is in
many cases the first concern for a?pleasing Hammond sound.?When I hear
my setup on recordings (X5 solid state Hammond through a?Leslie-clone with
a tube amp) it?has a lot more?of?roarin' and screamin' than a
real solid state Leslie...?
?
greetz!
