Re: W11 Laptop Recommendation
FWIW, here are my 2 cents.? You need to make an executive decision before anything else - choose to be completely inside the Microsoft Cloud or have the ability to create a local user account that doesn't require being in the MS cloud (and train their AI). Win11 Pro, 24H2 will, if you have some command line skills, allow you to create a local user account while Win11 Home does not.?? Armed with that info, I have had good luck with HP Elitebooks, a lower end but business class laptop. You don't want a no name brand because support will be even less available than from HP.? Always buy the extended warranty because the newer notebooks are made like junk compared to their Win 10 counterparts unless you want to drop $1K+ on a top tier business laptop. I've purchased several refurbished laptops from New Egg but never went for the extended warranty and only one, a HP Elitebook with 12 megs and a 512gB SSD, Win11 Pro had a problem- a defective camera. Since it was my wife's machine, I never tested the camera and when her Zoom meeting didn't work, it was two days past the warranty. I added an external camera which works OK but caveat emptor.? I will never buy another laptop, new or refurbished, without an extended warranty.?? Hope that this gives you something to chew on.? YMMV.? 73, Dave WB2PJH |

The USA Counties Award is managed by the MARAC organization and was implemented after CQ folded with some changes from CQ's award.

One major change is we do not require written confirmation of contacts for the award, ie QSL cards.? The fact that the organization has no Awards Manager is correct BUT we have an Awards Secretary that does all the work managing the awards. The MARAC board of directors comprised of hams from different districts guide the Awards Secretary and make the primary decisions that the Secretary implements. More information on the USA Counties Award and other county hunting awards can be found on their website. marac.org 73 NA8W Great Lakes Director marac.org ? CQ Magazine is an ex-magazine, it is no more. As the magazine business expired, things basically fell apart and a few bits fell off the perch. It is not easy to find definitive information on the web: presumably the heavy burden of administering awards, contests, contest plaques and certificates reduces the enthusiasm/energy for maintaining websites and pages. Here's what I've found with an hour's Googling this morning ... Some of the CQ awards and contests are still going: * LoTW still supports WAZ and WPX awards but ... * Administration of WAZ awards has been taken up by Jose N4BAA who presumably has some way to verify applicants' LoTW or eQSL confirmations and QSL cards, and has been getting creative with the plaques - see * WPX award is moribund/AWOL, with mixed reports/complaints about late or non-arrival of plaques * Anyone planning to apply for the CQ awards via LoTW is well advised to check with ARRL HQ before parting with any money [Hint: eQSLs are free!] * The USA Counties Award is now run by the Mobile Amateur Radio Awards Club ... that evidently lacks an awards manager - see * Various CQ contests are now being administered by the World Wide Radio Operators Foundation - see * CQ WPX, CQ WW and CQ 160m contests have been extremely popular and look set to continue * I'm not sure the "CQ" name will endure but for now at least it remains 73 GL Gary ZL2iFB<> Logger32<> beater/tester & scribe<> DXCC<> Honor Roll & QSL card<> checker On Wed, 9 Apr 2025 at 03:08, Bob via groups.io<> <k4cy@...<mailto:[email protected]>> wrote:
It looks like a long time ago I introduced a bug that causes the WAZ award window to not show Confirmed and Granted credits. This is fixed for the next update. As no-one has previously reported this, I assume WAZ is of little interest. Does the award still exist, didn't I see/hear somewhere that CQ is history?. (Yes, WAZ treats RTTY as a distinct mode.) I recently earned the WAZ award for 12m, all in digital mode. There does not seem to be a way to mark that award as "Granted" for any of the QSOs in that award submission using the panel for updating awards. I get a warning that it cannot be done because a Primary Administrative region is unspecified, but that seems to be a wayward notice. It seems that the WAZ award may not be activated for reporting individual bands. If that's the case, OK. (There are numerous WAZ award categories with unique awards available for almost all modes on all bands--perhaps more programming than anyone would like to undertake an retain one's sanity!) |
Re: W11 Laptop Recommendation
Just an addition to that... watch out for programs that keep on running background processes after being 'closed'. Notably Edge and Chrome default to this, other stuff (mostly) may not. Use taskmgr to find these and change their settings within the browser and then check again. Also, remove a bunch of stuff in the 'Apps' area, such as the awful M$ News, Weather, etc., etc. they are tracking-ware disguised as 'handy' items! I shudder to think how a relatively clean HP machine compares to the likes of Lenovo stuff that's filled with crap-ware and much other layers of their configuration junk. Speaking on hardware, newer laptops have less ports and generally are 50/50 split between USB and USB-C sockets, with one USB-C being used for charging/power. Oh, VGA, etc. is pretty dead. Just about all use HDMI so you also have to jump that issue with an external monitor, BTW.

Re: W11 Laptop Recommendation
Just bought two HP Probook 445 G11s - AMD Ryzen 7, RAM 32GB, SSD 1TB. At $799 each.
Several things to comment about: Win11 running same programs is taking a lot more RAM than win10, between 6-9GB most of the time. It really needs a lot more RAM and I wouldn't skimp on it. In my opinion, 16GB is going to be a future problem. My current old Toughbook has 8GB and with browser running plus L32 and a bit more stuff it's occupying 80% of 8GB most of the time. When it was purchased [ahem] 11 yrs ago browsers were much smaller and 4GB would've been adequate. The new HP Probooks and Elitebooks have horrible resource hungry thing preloaded called Wolf Security. It's truly a huge resource hog and should be removed immediately. There are lots of ways described online. It's really stupid of them to include it. Also, force the machine during setup to NOT log into Microsoft - find that on the web too [say you are a student or business and have your own network domain]. Have always trusted HP and had terrible experiences with Dell in particular [thermal problems in laptops]. Beware any laptops with soldered in RAM and SSD chips [that's most, including the slightly lower HP Pavilion Plus and 'consumer' grade beneath that]. They cannot be expanded and SSD cannot be changed - just like all Apples that I know of. Pull the trigger quickly. You may be too late by now. 2 weeks ago HP had no stock and were costing the above items to deliver in the first week of May and cost $2020 each!!!!! Amazon sold the above but have been cleared out in the meantime and have practically no remaining HPs. Ironically they were shipped to a Canadian corporate customer who never accepted them, so mine came out of a batch of 200 machines that were never opened and came from Canada [the irony]. Full Amazon and HP support. I did check Amazon a couple of days ago and they were wiped out of ALL quality laptops. Finally, I'd like to say how AWFUL it is to move over browser settings these days between PCs, with the marked exception of Firefox which is old-school. Chrome, Edge and Vivaldi [my choice] are only moveable by syncing through their servers and then deleting the data afterwards. That's horrible and extremely time consuming, especially when doing two machines with different data sets. It took me hours to come to that conclusion when still struggling with Chrome itself. Vivaldi was by far the better of the 'Chrome based' browsers in this regard despite it's highly improved feature set and UI. To be clear, I use Vivaldi 98%, FF 1%, Chrome 1% and Edge only because MS will keep re-loading it and breaking other things around it, so it's easier to keep it but not run it. What's this to do with L32? Not much, cus it's easy to install, but it's the rest that'll shape or should shape your choices of hardware and software. 73, Paul. |
Re: W11 Laptop Recommendation
I'd definitely go for a 'native' Windows11 system, one designed and certified for W11, as MicroShaft is withdrawing support for Win10. ? Keep an eye on the used tech market for corporate hand-me-downs.? I've found Dells to be well-engineered and great value from BigCo's that refresh their?entire?PC stock every 2 years or so.? Half the new price, or less, is a bargain. 73 Gary? ?beater/tester &? Honor Roll &? checkerOn Wed, 9 Apr 2025 at 12:48, Larry Fravel via <lfravel93=[email protected]> wrote:

Re: TS870 CAT Control
Bill If you poit correct com port then try this. Check "Set DTR high" or check "Set RTS high" or Check " USE CTS/RTS Hardware Handshaking" This is sample settings for my TS480. It connects TS480 and PC via serial/USB adapter in my case. 73 de aki JA1NLX

Re: TS870 CAT Control
Hi Bob,
Being a total newbie with this, I get the same as you show using the TS2000
If I use just "Kenwood" as it says in the help pages, I get this
The port used is three(3)
If I unplug the radio, port 3 does drop out on the pc.?
Only thing I can think of is a bad RS232 port on the radio?
