We began with a bang, a good grand slam that showed the difficulties attached to the auction 1H-1S; 3H (recall last week how Bill responded 2C to be able to show support with 3H in a forcing auction, after which he and Jeff Goldman had room to reach their slam). This time responder was sure of 6H but had insufficient room after the 3H jump rebid to show heart support and find the needed singleton spade to make 7H. The grand slam was bid by Leighry and Jerik. Jerik had the advantage of the 1C opening bid; Jim already knew only one king was missing. There were six hands with contracts all in one suit - four of them hearts. Board 8 had a slam on which West held ---- AKQJ85 54 AKQ98 as dealer; slam was a clear but not overwhelming favourite, reached only three times and each time by blasting. They had bad luck on Board 1 when they were the only pair who got doubled in 4S and made an unlucky opening lead on Board 6. Gel, Keianne and Paun all won six rounds. Pharah had the best start, winning the first four rounds; Leighry recovered best from a slow start. Close slams were bid and made on Boards 3, 8 and 10, the one on Board 3 being a close grand slam. The slam on Board 8 had the prettiest position. Two procedural points arose worth mentioning. One is to remind players that in Robot-human partnerships the Robot will explain all the calls for both players; it is important to remember to take explanations of the human's bids as what the robot expects and not necessarily indicative of what the player holds or intended the bid to mean. One player based a competitive overcall on a Robot's explanation and finished with a bottom score. The other incident came when someone had a senior moment or perhaps misread the auction, responding 2D to 1NT and, when asked, giving a not very coherent explanation. I was able to explain to the next opponent that the bid was supposed to be a transfer and that that was what was on the pair's card. I cannot do much more. Players are entitled to know their opponents' agreements and not their hands. Complainer wanted to bid 2H (which ought not to have been useful, as surely that should be for takeout) but I could not give th nudge to which complainer felt entitled. I meant to post about this earlier but things have been hectic. We are looking for players to field some teams for an International Interclub Friendly against an English bridge club called Tyler Hill on Monday 12 February (afternoon our time, evening theirs. It would run about the same length as a usual online game and be quite free.) I was contacted by their manager a while back; they've had these matches before with American clubs. I can make up teams or partnerships for interested players. If people could let me know within a week or so it would be appreciated.

Pheileen were 6-2-1, while 6-3 records were posted by Jerik, Jenky, Geoel, Matty and Paun. Bota and Leighry boh recovered from losing four of the first five rounds, Paun from losing three of the first four. Although we did not have any hands on which everyone was in the same contract, there with six hands on which all the tables played in the same denomination. There were numerous slams - a toss-up on Board 5, good slams on Board 6 and 8 and a cold slam on Board 9 on which Troward and Heve bid and made a lucky 7NT. Two significant glitches occurred. One North opened 1S instead of 1H on Board 1 and came away with a huge top board worthy of a Victor Mollo story. On Board 15 a player disconnected long enough to be replaced by a robot for two calls in the auction. One of the robot's calls seemed to be not what the pair would have done. I reseated the player during the auction and pointed out which two calls the robot had made but the pair still finished with a sub-optimal result.
