This may be my first and last post on this list, but I wanted to clear a few misconceptions:
Tom Rausch is not the Admin of Amps. I'm not either ;^)
W4AN was not a fan of free speech - he replaced me as Admin of Towertalk when I refused to censor posts there; this is not a knock on Bill, just a difference of philosophy.
I run a local community affairs mailing list with only two rules - sign your real name and maintain basic civility - keep it substantive, not personal. In 6 years, I've had to ban one person for a week. A parallel list has no such rules, and has disintegrated into ugly name- calling.
From what I have read, such a regime on amps would have worked pretty well, though the Admin would have had to ban a few people.

Pete, I guess you do what you think you
must do, BUT, I have a lot of trouble with the idea that someone operates an “open”
forum and feels the need to hide.? That concept really bothers me.? I post my
name and callsign every time I post to a reflector, and I am very suspicious
about the intentions of someone who feels the need to hide in the shadows.

Tom Rausch is not the Admin of Amps There is no Admin of AMPS. From its beginning in late 1996, AMPS has always had a moderator --- who was identified. I got booted off AMPS three times by three different moderators for questioning the accuracy of W8JI's technical statements. I'm not either ;^) Chortle. Nobody is the "Administrator". It's another Rauchian word game. For example, Tom says I wasn't booted off of AMPS, he says I was "unsubscribed". W4AN was not a fan of free speech -
Definitely not. AMPS got started in 1996 because things went badly for W8JI during the grate parasitics debate on rec.amateur- radio.homebrew. W4AN's AMPS provided W8JI with a venue where anyone who disagreed with W8JI's technical fumbles could be booted. Thus, Tom's guru status could be protected, at least in the minds of those who believed in his infallibility. RE: W4AN & free speech: After Bill Fisher died at such a young age, I tried to find out how it happened. I could find out nothing from the County Coroner. Rumor was that there was an automobile accident, that the car landed in water a considerable distance from the highway, and that it happened near a drag-strip in Georgia. My guess is that the Coroner's Report was suppressed because the toxicology finding would have been an embarrassment. he replaced me as Admin of Towertalk when I refused to censor posts there; this is not a knock on Bill, just a difference of philosophy. Censoring posts should be a last resort. When censoring becomes a weapon to protect pals, the group gradually loses credibility and begins morphing into a mutual admiration society. I run a local community affairs mailing list with only two rules - sign your real name and maintain basic civility - keep it substantive, not personal.
sounds reasonable, but the ultimate censor is being ignored by the rest of the group. In 6 years, I've had to ban one person for a week. A parallel list has no such rules, and has disintegrated into ugly name- calling. AMPS has had ugly name-calling and no action was taken because the name-caller was a pal of the "Administrator"-censor, W8JI. During the grate debate on rec.amateur-radio.homebrew, there was an abundance of name calling from the Rauchian camp after Wes, N7WS, published the measurements of Q, Rp, Z, and Y of low-Q parasitic suppressors vs. W8JI parasitic suppressors. From what I have read, such a regime on amps would have worked pretty well, though the Admin would have had to ban a few people.
But Joe Subich is Tom's pal. farewell, Pete 73, Pete Smith N4ZR

And what's the alternative? I should "out" him? That's not my prerogative, either.
I have been a member of amps since its inception, and while I disagree with prior restraint of speech, I think its series of moderators have acted with great self-control in the face of extraordinary provocation. I believe the previous moderator resigned at least in part because of the private vitriol directed at him.

ever showed up on the reflector that he was gone. The admin guy didn't answer me
