Any trapless yagi? or wire ant will handle it easily.? 12.8 kw is 16 amps into 50 ohms.? RMS voltage is? 16 x 50 =? ?800 volts rms? = 1131 volts peak.?
The CM choke is the trick part.? ?Here,? RG-393 teflon coax is used.?

?

For 160m use,? 7 turns of 393 coax are wound onto 5 x 2.4" OD? (type 31 cores).? This results in aprx 5.5k ohms.? 2 x identical CM chokes are used in series...= 11 k ohms.?
For 75m use, 7 turns of 393 coax are wound onto 5 x 2.4" OD ( type 31 cores).? This results in 7.6 k ohms.? 2 x identical CM chokes are used in series? =? ?15.2 k ohms.?

For 40m use,? 6 turns of 393 coax are wound onto 5 x 2.4" OD? ( type 31 cores).? ? This results in 6.6 k ohms.? ?Again, 2 x identical CM chokes are used in series? =? 13.2 k ohms.

Each CM choke assy? is installed inside a 8" x 8" x 4" thick plastic NEMA? box.? You can get the Nema plastic box's at any home depot, Lowes, etc...in the electrical dept. .?

And no, they don't over heat nor blow up.? ?I use Permatex dielectric grease on the gasketed lid..... and seal it up tight.? Also pack each nema box with a lot of silica gel ..aka...'desiccant'.?

?

Only 1/2 of the applied voltage appears across the choke.? EG:? 400 vrms? into? 11k ohms =? (400 v squared ) / 11,000 ohms =? 14.5 watts.? ?That's 7.25 watts? per nema box..( and even less when 13.2 and 15.2 k ohms are used)..? And that's with a? 12.8 kw CCS CXR into a 1:1 swr.?

?

On SSB, average power is only 29% of pep out....and that's with a lot of processing.? ?Average power on CW is higher than SSB.? ? But peak V is STILL? the same, regardless of duty cycle...or mode.? Average current is way less.? EG: .29 x 12.8 kw = 3.741 kw.? ?3.741 kw average =? 8.7 amps average current.?

?

It's average current that melts stuff...... and peak V that arcs stuff.? ? And if stacked yagi's are used, each only handles 1/2 the applied power ( if 2 yagi's used....and only 1/3 power, if 3 x yagi's used).?

?

Typ, depending on mode and freq used,? ?LMR-600 and bigger is used for main coax.? ?ALL? connectors are 7-16 DIN.? ?Typ,? RG-393 teflon coax is used for rotor loops....or? LMR-600UF.?

That would be like running a SB-220? at? 150 watts pep out.....wasted effort really.?

To run that amp at reduced power, the B+ needs to be reduced by using the lower taps on the sec of the plate xfmr.? ?Then the plate load Z remains the same.?
IE:? use the 2900 V tap...and drive to 1/2 normal plate current.? ?PO is now 3 kw.? Or use the 2300 V tap for even lower PO.?

With the Dayton blower used, and a 25 deg C (77F) inlet air temp, the CCS anode diss is 8 kw.? ?The blower is a 2 x speed type.? ?The lower speed is more than ample for SSB / CW use.? It also has a switch on the front panel to change blower speeds.? The front panel was powder coated.? The socket, tube, chimney and fil xfmr were all brand new.? The only thing used was the pair of Jennings vac tune + load caps...and variac for the fil xfmr.? All 4 vac relays are sped up with an overvoltage.? It's the same amp that I posted 57 pix of, years ago on the old yahoo? group.? When it switched to groups.io? the pix were not transferred over to the new group.? It's also got a new hr meter to keep track of hrs on the fil.? In normal operation, the 7.0 vac fil was reduced to just 6.3 vac (after 200 hrs @ 7.0 vac).? Bucketloads of emission. On paper, the tube should last 35k hrs.? Tube is rebuildable.? Tube is rated for 3.5 amps CCS.? In normal operation it was 2.1 amps? for 10 kw...and? 2.5 amps? for 12 kw.?

It's built like a fn tank.? ?It rolls around on steel casters.? Footswitch plugged into the amp, so it could be keyed from the garage for tune up.? In normal operation, all the various freqs for each band were logged on a cheat sheet, for both the output and the input. So it was just....'dial it up by the numbers' after that.? IE: dial up pre-sets.? ?Took 45 secs to get from 15m down to 160m.? Good enough.? It's a 24" wide rack.? ?Plate xfmr is 253 lbs.? Forget what the total weight is, I think around 400 lbs.??

To my thinking, the technical and build accomplishment is not really minimized by the utility, any more than a Porsche 911 is on a typical 75 mph highway.? Overkill has a magic all it's own.?

A dual motor Tesla does 234km/h (145mph). That is illegal but we are all encouraged to buy one.

We take on a build of a big amp to prove that we can do it. That's why I've built a YC156 amp and helped to build another. At our limit of 400W PEP, it is running in Class A.

##? Simple. We are not appliance operators who drop $9K on a rinky dink table top amp...complete with throw away tubes.? ?We also have some basic shop tools, drill press, hydraulic?punches, etc, etc.?

The ends justify the means.?

?1.5 kw into stacked yagi's is ....'ok'? ?but 5 kw into a dipole is a ..'no-no'.? ?Gimme a break.?

A bunch of DXers and Contesters I had work week regular lunch meet.? We had a saying: If your tube doesn’t have handles you aren’t squat. (Polite version.)
