A diode clamp is simply? a pair of REVERSE connected diodes, like 1N5408 / 6A10 / PM-600? type diodes.? ?They are wired between the B-? and the chassis.? Then the B- can never wander more than +/- .7 vdc? from chassis potential.

IF the? B+ anode ever arced to the (grounded) grid, the fault path is then through the chassis....and up out of the chassis, through one of the diodes...and back to B-? which completes the loop...and the HV fuse opens up asap, in < 1 msec.?

I use a 750 ma HV fuse in series with the B+ output ( instead of drakes .82 ohm resistor)....then a 50 ohm @ 50 watt wire wound resistor.? The 50 ohm resistor will? LIMIT the fault current to just 2500/50 ohms = 50 amps.? And 50 amps of fault current will OPEN OFF? a 750 ma rated? HV fuse in < 1 msec every time.?

Without the RVS connected diodes wired between? ?B- and chassis (I install em in both the L4PS / L7PS? HV supply....and also the RF deck) what happens is the fault current will flow into the chassis (anode to grid arc)...then up out of the chassis...then through the grid shunt,? grid meter pegs backwards.......then? through the plate current meter (plate current meter pegs forward)...then? back to the B-? of the HV supply, destroying both meters in the process.?

Anode systems should have series-resistance to limit peak current in the event of a tube arc or failure. That series resistance should always be in the anode lead between the filter capacitors and RF choke. A diode clamp should be installed to protect meters, especially the grid meter since the grid is in the normal path of any internal tube arc.?

?

Could you explain to me what this means A diode clamp should be installed

Thanks

Dear Everett et al,

?

There are those that believe a Pi-Wound, or even

a Solenoid-Wound inductor is the Saving Grace of

QRO amplifiers.

?

And there are those who think that monsters are

really hiding in their granddaughters’ closets, and

that hidden, destructive parasitic oscillations

reside, ready to lash out on unsuspecting operator

equipment.

?

Both camps are correct. RF energy behaves more like

sub-atomic particles riding waves of phase change

DC energy, excited somehow in more direction

than only one, and possible at the very same time.

?

Modeling software is only a test to see if something’s

kosher or not at a readily recognizable set of params,

so what, and why did my amplifier, after hours and

hours of QSY everywhere and outside antenna follies,

decide to go, “BINK!” and leave me with a $5,000

set of ceramojunk? “ Parasitic Oscillations,” the

well-remembered AG6K would say, while his close

friend(s) would say, “Hogwash!,” and both were right?

?

(I still have small rolls of Nichrome 30 and Nichrome 60

if anyone needs any.)

?

The circuit recommendation to avoid hi-impedance

pathways is achievable by a method to bolster the ampacity.

Using something with a wide bandwidth helps.

Most Pi-W’s use microscopic wire.? Some Grid Anomalies

may induce a bolt of juice in them tubes, there, of Just

You may be right, but how long was that for?

In that infinitesimal slot your Pi-W’s windings are going

to heat up, maybe in more than one place, and what’s

?

It might as well be mentioned a nice fat slug of copper

wire in between every G1 tube socket and chassis ground

for as short a distance as possible makes a reliable

Dentron DTR-2000L info

Hi All,
?
I have a DTR-2000L that I'm trying to bring back to life.? It's the same one that I asked about last year.? What I'd like is IF someone that has one of these amps, that's working, would you be willing to take some pics of the coil and cap section of the tank circuit so I can determine what I need to do to return it to stock.? The tank coils have been soldered ALL OVER THE PLACE.? All the leads going back to the band switch have been moved and I'm sure some genius tried to convert it to 11 meters.??
?
BTW, it DOES appear that is had a NEW socket installed in it and it's marked as such.? I won't be convinced on that until I pull it apart and verify the ground connections at the socket.??
?
Anyway, if someone could be of some help, I would appreciate it
?
Thanks!!!

Re: Commander HF-2500

Hi Alek, I’ve seen some of the older units and worked on them. ?The real old ones had no grid trip circuit and so I made up a circuit board ?with a trip circuit and implement it on the old units. The front panel fairly easily drops down and you have easy access to the meter board. ?I ditch those crazy fuse type lights and I put an LED strip across the top of the two meters. ?Works great, never have??to deal with the fuse bulbs again. ?Very bright and nice too!! ?Usually the meter board has a grid shunt resistor right on it. ?As I recall there are 8 wires connecting to the board l, some colors are doubled up. ?If you disconnected the wires and have to re-identify ??them, you may have to ring them out back to the control board. ?Send a photo of your meter board to me. ?BTW….I now have a replacement power supply board for those amps. ?Lou

This is a real long shot.

I have an old Commander HF-2500 which I love very much. It is Serial
Number 186 and it conforms with the printed manual and schematic of June
1990.

However, there is no diagram or separate drawing of the Meter Circuit
Detail, as published in the later versions of the manual that one finds
online. For instance the circuit published 6/16/95.

The 1990 Meter Circuit Board does not conform to the later published
diagram. Therefore, I am hoping that someone may have been here before
me and has the the information that I'm seeking. That is, I'm looking
for the diagram of the meter board and the wire colour code and
description of the 12 connection points on the board. In particular,
points 1 to 8 which relate to grid meter and plate/HV metering and the
selector switch.

I The Meter board is hard to get to, so I cut mine out to install meter
dial LEDs and I extended the wires, so that it could be mre easily
removed and serviced. I would dearly like to compare my board to a
drawing of the correct era.

Any help appreciated.
