Henry Transformer Data sheet

A friend sent me this sheet. I thought I would post it in case anyone needs it at a later date.? This also applies to many of the RF generators.

Re: Bird Termaline load repair

GM! After seeing that I am positively certain the reason you don't have a flat match is someone kluged the short resistor in place with a copper pipe to extend it to the feed point. Putting the correct resistor in it should restore the factory performance.? ?Reid? W6MTF?

Re: Bird Termaline load repair

So really the point is that I want the load to operate according to specifications:? VSWR 1.1:1 0-1 GHz; 1.25:1 1-2 GHz.? This one can't make spec above 30 MHz.

Here is another picture of the innards.? At top is the tapered outer conductor.? Middle is the RF input (Bird QC connectorm, not visible to the right) and the inner conductor/resistor.? The copper piece interfacing directly with the resistor end is a screw-tightened clamp which is obviously hand-made.? The id of the fingerstock bit is 0.875", a perfect fit for 3/4" copper pipe, but not for any known (to me) non-inductive resistor.

The tapered section looks similar to others I've seen online.

I now have a 12" long 50 ohm non-inductive resistor, which will use up the entire length of the tapered section.? I can make more Cu plumbing to adapt the fingerstock to the resistor, but it just seems really odd to me that Bird would do it this way.? Wouldn't it have made more sense for the fingerstock to fit 1.0" id?

Re: Bird Termaline load repair

Typ, the local power company will give u a few gallons? of xfmr oil.? ?I used that in the heath dl....and also my HB? 8 gallon DL.? ?But neither are used above 10m.?

?

Mineral oil will work too, but has to be de-rated vs the real deal xfmr oil.? (note the 2 x graphs on the heath cantenna).? ?Bird used some esoteric silicone oil in their loads.?

?

OP, how much PO are u gonna put into a DL on 435 mhz ???

SB-200

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

First time I ever set foot in an SB-200 and it doesn¡¯t look too complicated. But I want to make sure I have it squared away before returning to its owner. My buddy bought this for $200. It looks clean inside with a pair of Cetron 572Bs that don¡¯t look like they had any abuse. As a matter of this thing looks pristine inside. They did place a Harbach ¡®Soft Key¡¯ and the all the filter caps have been replaced with CD¡¯s. The parasitics don¡¯t look as though they suffered any kind of excessive heat.

????????? Here is where it gets interesting: It seems the previous owner said that R15 was always cooking. Lo and behold sure enough the 1.5¦¸ resistor is fried. Following the lead? up into the base of the 572Bs, I see where somebody replaced one of the 1W 33¦¸ resistors with what appears to be either a ? watt or ? watt going to the grid. The other has the original carbon comp 1W there. Also, the where the wire connects to the terminal strip, it was cold soldered and moved around freely making continuity intermittently.

????????? So 2 questions: 1) would that intermittent cause that meter shunt R15, to toast like that and 2) do those resistors for the grids have to be 1W or will ? suffice like what is in there?

????????? Also, could it be possible it is suffering from a spike as a result of the relay coil? (ok 3 questions!). Included is a photo.

????????? If it turns out this is all that is wrong with it, my friend scored the deal of the day at $200!

PS: I also included a photo where that green wire from R15 comes and the different grid resistors.

Re: Bird Termaline load repair

In some counties Baby Oil is a mineral oil and suitable for electrical cooling. It is also possible to drain the oil from a discarded electric radiator which in my experience is similar but less viscous. I am sure none of these would be as good as the Bird oil but maybe OK for amateur use.

What is the swr at lower freqs..... like below 435 mhz ??? ? It needs to be swept from 1- 435 mhz.? ?It needs to be put on the VNA, like Francois noted.?

For all we know, it might be fine up to 150-200 mhz.....then above that, goes to hell......and fast.?

Why focus on the ROS which hides an important parameter which is the reactif. Measure and show us the S11 with a nanaoVNA from 0 to 1 GHz. The variation on the Smith will tell you more than the SWR measurement.

I guess I should consider myself fortunate. I got a gallon of silicon oil from work. It is use to keep the HV electrodes cool that make ozone for our DI water system/PW500. I put it in my old Heathkit Cantenna. One thing I notice is that I should have created a reservoir and installed a circulation pump. It makes a hot spot about in the middle of the can. Circulating it I probably could have made it capable of 2KW rather easily.

Re: AL-82 For Sale

if pushed hard on 80 and 160.. can and do arc over on the band switch and the wire that runs down thru the switch.? I have had to clean mine..?

Re: AL-82 For Sale

Never heard of a problem with the band switch....there are 9 people, in a group of u, that chat every morning on 75 and they/we all have 82's.

This a new 'issue' to me.

In any case, never had an issue with the band switch on this 82!

Best check the band switch prior to a sale, they are pretty much
unobtanium at a realistic price. As far as I know you need to order
direct from manufacturer of switch, they have a 5k minimum order amount
for new customers.

I have a 6 year old AL-82 legal limit amplifier to sell. I am pretty
sure it has a shorted 3-500z tube. I know it has a suspect T/R relay.

Rather than spend the money for 2 new tubes, I opted on purchasing a
new solid state legal limit amplifier (RF2K-S) from Island Amplifiers.

³§´Ç¡.

The AL-82 is for sale. I will include 3, new, T/R boards for the
amplifier. (AL-82¡¯s have known issues with the T/R relays, so to
make sure I would not have any parts availability issues, I just
bought 3.) It is also wired for 240v operation. I also have the
factory manual¡somewhere..if I can¡¯t find it, I will print out a
good copy.

It is a great amp, capable of well over legal limit, if that is your
bent. I found 500 watts was all I ever needed for my communications
and it just loafed along at that power.

In any case, I am asking $1200 for the amp and spare T/R relays.
Again, no shipping. I am handicapped and I can no longer take it
apart to ship.

Inquiry¡¯s can be sent to my email address above.
